353(7,1,q7/vr--0 ) THE DAILY NEWS Wednesday, May 18, 1966 Thursday, May 19, 1968 Death Of King Koroki-, The death of King Koroki, the fifth Maori "King," will bring sorrow and lamentation to all Maoridom, even to that substantial part of it which does not recognise the "King's" leadership. For King Koroki to Wherowhero was a remarkable man, a peacemaker and a master of compromise, who helped his people bridge the gap between tribal and urban living. He will be remembered chiefly for leading the Waikato peoples finally to accept compensation for ? confiscated lands, for his attitude to the anniversaries of battles in the Maori-pakeha wars and for his dignity, wisdom and commonsense in the performance of his duties. Yet the death of King Koroki emphasises the fact that his realm was an anachronism, a kingdom only in the spirit, an empire with no territorial boundaries. He was in fact the arch-rangitira of the tribes in and bordering on Waikato, tribes which, with the ever increasing urbanisation of the Maori people, are fast losing their identities. do Probably only a New Zealander can understand the mane attaching to this office, which may now pass from father to daughter. It is rooted in the past, and reflects the Maori's pride in his past, In his race, in his forebears. To Maori and pakeha alike there is no illogicality in this joint loyalty to Maori "King" and pakeha Queen. With the full integration of Maori and pakeha, which will \_ undoubtedly come to pass in time, the meaning, purpose and reason d'etre of the Maori Kingship will inevitably be lost. Meanwhile the office, and the man holding it, perform a useful and vital role in helping the Maori race through the difficult transition between one culture and another.

1002araeter provided by Sir APirana y well come to be applied to eon Te AM: -First, she is a woman. condi, she is a Potatau (the blest of arikis or high chiefs. as all descendants of the first Maori ngl. Thirdly. she is a Maori." Understandably. it is as a woman It most New Zealanders look upon new queen at present. She IS ique in a unique Polynesian nasty. Those who saw her sustain greatest physical and emotional durance during the live days of Doming for her father d only ear after the death of her mother. old not fail to be impressed by her urage and devotion to duty. To e her later raised to her high office s to sense her quiet confidence d dedication to her task. tier per. nal background, which combines e best of the old and the new eelds in Maori affairs, speaks for elf. Again to quote Sir Apirana atai -Your best citizen Is the one ost loyal to his own culture, one ho. at the same time, acquires that the pakeha.- worker. flee ti;nlW woman is ancestors e home, in the cultivations, in the paving house and in the forest ithering food. They even ac. nmanied war parties. sometimes the fighting. and in king par a the mare ? In the strictly domestic Held Maori women were prinently concerned with preserving and per prtuating the values implied in Maoritanga, the ideological character of Maori life. They were. and indeed are, still noted for their contribution to cultural and social affairs. II Is, perhaps. because of the intimate and vital nature of their traditional role that the women tend to he more outspoken than the men on domestic issues. Just as in ancient times they urged the warriors to do battle with the enemy, so today they provoke their people to come to grips with the problems that beset the race. Women everywhere set the tone of the household and the foundations of Maori welfare rest squarely. in the home. The true Maori home is more than a mere sleeping place, it is the gathering place for kinsfolk and for preserving Maori ideals. Some homes present a squalid outward appearance but Maori values are strong within. Conversely, many an apparently re. spectable home is devoid of Maori associations and the occupants have little Identification with pakeha society. Whereas the pakeha tends to evaluate his social ideals in economic terms. the Maori is more concerned with values which cannot be turned into cash. Hospitality, kinship, and respect for elders, rank among the greatest virtues in Maori life. On the other hand ma, Maoris are uncon corned about material advantages andoften their standards and hygiene suffer. Nor do they always appreciate that neglect of human needs under mines their economic and social security. Maori standards of living are still deeply rooted in Maoritanga. But there is a rapidly growing awareness among the Maori women that the successful adjustment of their people to modern living lies in happily combining i. Mernents with the best features of pakeha society. The mod Farge."the'e Maori Women's "Verltf League, of which Queen Te Ala Is patroness. owes much of its success to this fusion of ideals. A speaker at a league conference some years ago expressed the point of view in this way: -I cannot change Z?. 1;ho'urt;sii 7oau'liniune I like to all New Zealanders as belonging to one count, but I wish to stay a Maori and to make my destiny that of a Maori. We all have the same aims but Nee have different ways of achieving them. I go to , tangs; you put up your tombstone. You have your way and I have mine." It was as a symbol of Maoritanga that Queen Te Ala was raised up on her mime at Turangewaewae. The outlying tribes acknowledged her and their leaders made obeisance to her as such. Waikato particularly has 1Z14 grZednon'rtdffir= their women have played an effective role in tribal affairs. The influence of Prince. Te Po. in Waikato and indeed in national life W33 recalled by many who heard that a woman had been proclaimed leader of the movement. Prince. Te Wes wielded tremendous authority not only by right of birth but also because she possessed foresight. wisdom, charity and competence. The fact that these qualities were rec. raised and permitted to overshadow traditional considerations accelerated the beneficial winds of change which have been blowing in Waikato for the last two decades. Queen Te Ata is not the first woman to considered as head of the King Movement. When Xing Koroki, father. Te Rata Mahuta. died some tribes favoured appointing Princess Te Puea to succeed hint. It was reported at the time that the WaikatoManiapoto element opposed the move. When it came to electingher grand niece 30 years later these same tribes revealed a healthy change of heart. acknowledging the competence of 3 woman to grapple with the problems which beset their people. Both Queen Te Ala and Princess Te Puea have revealed some of the attributes of Princess Te Paea, the daughter of the first Maori King. Potalau A young woman. possessing resolution, strength of character and extremely high intelligence, she was favoured by some to lead the King Movement on her father's death Those who knew her believed she would have made an effective leader but her nomination was finally set aside for that of her brothel-. Tawhiao. Beyond Waikato other Maori women nude their mark in ages past. One who attained the most exalted position in her tribe was Hine. matioro, of Ngatorou. She was recognised In the grim days of tribal warfare as having special qualities and her name and reputation spread far and wide. It is said that enemies captured in battle who asked for mercy in her name were spared. Other women who were held in great respect were Tamairangl, of Ngatra. and NIalimarangi, of Ngati. kahunguns. Mahinarangi gave her name to the carved house at Turangawaewie opposite which Queen Te Ata was proclaimed to her people. This famous chieftainess married the Waikato chief, Throng?. who Is represented by the residence of the late king, which adjoins Mahinarangi. While Maori women can be the most outspoken advocates of social progress they can also be resolute defenders of the old traditions. The undercurrent of hostility arising from land losses and the undermim ing of Maori institutions continues to run in Waikato among the older people. /t is said there are still a few diehards who proudly refuse to accept Government money in Compensation for past injustices or for a, other purposes. The younger folk on the other hand acknowledge that the Maori cannot prosper if he allows these soperating wounds to hamper ids development. They consider that to forget the wrongs of the past is a small price to pay for acquiring the ample benefits which a modern and faseveloping society offers.

1033QUEEN In an era when the rapid emancipation of women is eclipsed only by-their effectiveness in national life,: renewed hopes for accelerated social and cultural progress among the Maori Velta-i-Ceast=h11. She was proclaimed leader of the Maori King Movement at Turangawaewae marae. Kgarua ahia. following the death of her father, King Koroki Te Rata, Idahuta Te Wherewhero. The King Movement was esta. I lished by the Maori people in 1858 with the installing of the Wai- kato chief, Te Wherowhero, as King Potatau. Since then the movement has waxed and waned. been praised and criticised from many quarters and has defied all predictions that it would die. Sir Apirana Ngata. whose good will toward 'Waikato and wisdom in Maori affairs are acknowledged, summed up its strength and weaknesses when he said: The movement can be an instrument for the uniting of all tribes as It has been to the 'Waikato since the days of Potatau." Unity is the keynote of the move-- Inent today; tribes throughout the length and breadth of the land acknowledge the leader of the move- ment as a high chief. Asa medium for achieving selfish nationalism or as a sounding board for age-old grievances the organisation serves no useful purpose compared with the objective to stimulate leader- ship and progress in a realistic and worthwhile pattern. Under a young queen. who appreciates her Maoritanga as much as she does the advantages A formal education and social welfare, the type of leadership sought may well materialise. Much of the progress klaori society has been due to women and women have played a significant Fa;t years. Many were reluctant to act without an official lead. 1- An Internal Affairs Department spokesman said that re was no clear ruling, -:.ause King Koroki had no, it- legal or. constitutional standing. 1, The Government recOgnized his title as a matter of courtesy. Therefore, public buildings were not required to: fly fla. at half-mast, but could do s-out of courtesy, especially in places where there was a close 'elatiOnship to the late king. or the Maori people. The registrar of the Aucklan! on Affairs Department, Mr J. Moore, said his department was not flying a flag, only \_ ause it had no flagstaff of its own on the building at the corner of Fort. Street and Jean Batten Place. King Koroki's funeral will b: on Monday.
