Princess Te Puea Herangi heard the suggestion and, us it fitted M with her own thought, wrote to the late Sir A. T. Ngata. Thus began the Celebrations, first at To Kai., Opotiki, on the 21st Icmuctry; at To -o-Rawir:, Gisborne, 24th February; at Otaki, 18th March; at Hastings on 22nd August; and at Whakatarm en the 22nd of September. The culmination of the series Princess Te Puea asked to he held at the Turangawoewae Pa, Ngaruawahia, from the 5th to the 10th October. The late Sir A. T. Ngata set the pattern tor tile Celebration gatherings. A CIO. investigation by Maori authorities into the orally kept traditions of the Canoes, an exchange of information on the Canoes, a study of tho lore, the history and literature of the people. A dash of colour and pageantry in the dances and rituals perforated on the Marcie, a display of the characteristic oratory of the elders. Bat such effusions and expressions of pride in the achievements of the ancient mariners must issue in important national prof., such as the extension of the Maori Colleges, To Auto and Hokum'e, the unveiling of Memorials to Maori Soldiers, and the discussion of matters affecting Maori Wore, land Development, Economic Advancement, Preservation of Maori Culture, and Education. Thus the Celebrations followed a definite form. Princess Te Puea, in accord with the pattern, sends this Brochure forth as a summary of tho discussions on the Canoe Stories. Further, she has ordered nine canoe mode's of the vessels specifically remembered at Nuareawahia to be carved in the Turangawaewoe Maori Adult Education Cktrving School and she has orgemised on All Maori Athletic Meeting as pad of the Celebrations. Now both the late Sir A. T. Ngata and Princess Te Pima Herangi recogrssod that the Celebrations arc sources of inspirotion for the Maori people as they Journey forth on the hazardous voyage of the future. But theirs is an irresistible faith that the descendants of those intrepid explorers whose initiative and adaptability developed here cm adequate way of life, and a satisfying culture will not be found wanting as they encounter the threatening seas of tho modem ocean of Kiwa with the help, guidance and sympathy of their follow citizenhe Pakeha. It is net the aim of the Celebrations or any Maori gathering to set the Maori apart from hot adopted kin. the Pakeha, but rather to revive interest and knowledge in a poorly documented period of New Zealand history. The core of Maori life is en in tile history, Um songs. the oratory. the poetry, the dances. the sense of community, the generous hospitality displayed at the Celebrations. These are the gifts of the Maori to the emerging race of New Zealanders. For, though the Celebrations more closely concern the direct descendants of Tainui, Takitimu, Kurahoupo, Tokornaru, Te Arawa, Mataatua, Aotea, Horouta and Ngalokimata. whaoruhe Maori people tho story of those canoes is becoming more and more an important, integral part of the ever-continuing wider history of our country and OM notion. " Drag hithehe Canoe, Haul hither? the Canoe, To the resting plache Canoe, To the abiding plache Canoe, To the plare where will lihe Canoe, T/IR10E WELCOME!" An ancient song exprisssed the pride of the descendants in the ancestral canoes the 600th anniversary of whose arrival is being celebrated this year:? ehold Tainui, Ty Arawa, Mataatua, Kurahaupo and Tokornaru, All afloat on the occan vast. The tree trunk w. hollowed in Hawaiki, A. so Takitimu took form A night was spent at Rangi, And Aotea took the sea at dawn These are the canoes of 1Jenuku Whose nanms resound unto the heavens How can their fame be e'er forgot, : When they float for aye on memory's tide? " To the canoes mention. may be added Horouta and Ngatokiniatawbaorua, to make the nine major ones being specifically remembered at the Ngaruawahia Hui. There am other lesser known eanoes, Nukutere, Tereaninl. Moira from the East Coast; Maraud, Mahuhic Ruakaramea, Waipapa, Te Marnitru, Te Riukakara, Tr, Moekakara, from North Auckland; Motumottuthi, Pangatoru, Wakaringaringa, Ringauamutu, Thhatura, Tairea and Arikimaitai from the Taranaki Coast. However these are not usually included in the Fleet Migration of 1350. All the migrations down to 1350 came from Ilawaiki, since (den. by Scientists as Tahiti, Halal, and the Cook Group The 1350 settlers left on the Orongonui o Tatauururoa corresponding to the end of November and the beginning of December in the European Calendar. The ea., of the last big migration were the increase in population and the consequent shortage of food supplies. A later suggestion points to recent introduction into Hawaiki the Komar, thus creating social and economic upheavals leading to colonisation abroad. The sailing directions had been deposited in the archives of the Wham Wananga by Kupe, "1, the left of the setting sun by day, and in pursuit of the Pleides at night." The Year 1350 was an arbitrary year calculated according to n conventional 25 years aflocated to each generation of the average in a large number of genealogic, down to 1900. The ancestral crafts were both of the double hulled, and single out-rigger kind; from 60 to a 100 feet long. They were equipped with sails, bailers, paddles end stoneanchors. Their average speed was 7 Sea miles per hour in a fair wind, and it would take a little under a fortnight to travel the 2,300 miles from Tall. to Aotearoa. To a people experienc. in sea journeys the food and water problems would be easily met and the fortnight's sojourn on the ocean would therefore be a comparatively simple matter. The Canoes landed at Ratanui, in the Whangapara00 area, a little to the south of Tikirau. Tainui sailed southwards to Opotiki, Tauranga, Whitianga, Hauraki, and Tainaki, where she was portaged acrnss the /SlIIMUS into Manukau at Otahuhu. She continued up the West Coast to Mokau; where she was returned later to Kawhia and Odd to rc,t at Maketo below the sacred shrine of her Captain Hotura. The human canoe, lies in the stern at Tamaki, and the bow at Mokau, while the sides of the human Canoe stretches over from Kawh. to Hauraki. (Too Rangihir.) Sir Peter Buck. c., , etc. The Te Arawa account clashes. The orthodox story takes the canoe final Whangaparaoa to Tauranga. Itangiuru, Chawa and Maketu. Another vertion assert. by Tapore te of Te Puke, lands 'ft Arawa at Moehau, where Tainatekapua threw his kora headgear overboard to claim the land. This account gives NeaMfoirangi, not Tanutteltainia, the captaincy of Te Arawa. The descendants are Thwharetoa. l'ikiao, Whakaue. Tapuika, Tuhourangi. A worthy Confederation of tribes summed up in the title: " The eight pulsating hearts Arawa." Thkitimu, captained by Tamateapokalwhenua, spanned the Hay of Plenty and saily,1 to the North Auckland. She returned and left Tamatea and his sons Whaene, Ranginth and Kahungunu at their Pa, Papamoa, </pre>

The Whakathhea attribute the saying to Muriwai, sister of Toroa. and their aneestreu, whose abode, a C2Ve, /S seen at Whakatane. Later Puhthataraikt.
