DOWN. 3C. Ray 1972. Dear Pei To Burinui, Dow that I am back hero in our home in Ireland I feel that I must write to thank you for your patience a ' your kindness when I forced myself on tc you in Taumarunui at the time we visted my som Peter there. Tho publication which you so kindly gave to me, and still more so kindly endod for me, are now in the shelves of my very modest library, but hardly a day goes by without one of them coming to hand to hold my attention for an hour. Since meeting you it has been brought home to me most forcibly how ignorant we are on this side of the world about NZ history, but moro especially ignorant about the 1,iaori people; your books help to clear up some of that ignorance for me, and for this I am grateful to you. The bk of 'The Songs' is fascinating; difficult for the ordinary halaked pakeha like me to understand since the rythym and metre are so different from our own. This is a book for leisurely perusal; the translation of it into English must have cost you years of patient work. I become incrensingly absorbed in your story of Te Pou o Pangatewhiri and of the King Country as told in Your Souvenir booklet; but again I soon run into difficulties with 7:.auri names and expressions and I am stupid with the geneological tables. cften I can't find in the table the name quoted in the text, and Vauri geographical placames are not sheen on such maps as I have available. The word Tgati' appears so frequently, usually a prefix to another name, that I assume 'flgati' means 'family' and I ,m left wondering if I am right in this.

WELLINGTON C.:, NEW ZEALAND 25 May 1972 Dr Pei Te Hurinui Jones, 1., 17 Ruapehu Crescent, Box 78, TAUMARUNCI Dear Dr Jones, Thank you very much indeed for your letter of 21 May with which you kindly send a translation of the balance of Erie Marepa's missive. We are, of course, very pleased to have this translation and I am glad that, as come small recompense, the reference to Moka Mutahi was of use to you. We are much taken by your suggestion that many Maori letter writers of this period were, in fact, setting down their thoughts in the sheer joy of being able to express themselves in this new media without any necessary relevance to matters in hand. In our choice of letters for translation we have perhaps been misled in assuming that the length of the letter has been some guide as to its importance. Clearly, this is not so. However, in view of your own interest in waiata, we shall check through our collection to see if there are any others which contain songs of possible interest. Thanking you once again for your most helpful labours, Yours sincerely, A. G. Bagnall Chief Librarian AGMW

Dear Dr. Jones, Mr. Morris has been away from the office through illness and it is for this reason that your very 11(4011 letter of the 22nd April has not been acknowledged sooner. Your letter has been studied by Sir Jack Rutland and he has asked that I convey his thanks to you for the obviously thorough consideration you gave to the problems which currently beset the Sir Jack Rutland Awards. The proposals you offer are welcome and they are being examined thoroughly. They appear to provide a sound basis for the change to the award scheme which it would seem should be made. We will keep you advised and we would like to feel free to request your counsel again if it becomes necessary. Again many thanks for your letter and advice and we do apologise for the belated acknowledgment. Yours faithfully, F. RENNIE.

Dr. P. to H. Jones, Box 78, TAUM AB UNUI Dear Dr. Jones, I am writing to seek your personal advice on matters relating to the Sir Jack Butland Awards for the Young Maori Man and Woman of the Year, the future position of which is due for consideration at the present time. As you are aware the Awards have now been made for the past four years, and while they have had considerable merit and have achieved objectives in many ways, there have also been features which have caused concern in areas which were not anticipated. Criticism has been made that because they are exclusively Maori Awards this is a kind of discrimination not in the mood of present thinking and not in the interests of the Maori people as a whole in the modern context - a view expressed by Maoris themselves. Further, there has been difficulty over the administration of the Award monies which has caused concern, and the initial procedure set out by the Maori Council and adopted, has not been carried out and has caused problems. Thirdly the Awards have become apparently a divisive force between the New Zealand Maori Council and the Maori Women's Welfare League, an element of great concern in Awards which were designed to bring harmony and unity.

Sir Jack's wish to help your work again this year remains unchanged. An indication of your - views of the value of the Awards in view of the criticisms outlined, or other indication of amendments or of an alternative way of achieving the desired objective would be most welcome. My discussions with Sir Jack have prompted this letter to you because your personal advice will be specially valued. I have taken the liberty of raising these issues because of my own close association with the Awards, and those connected with them during the past three years, and my approach is to explore the possibility of overcoming the present problems or to see whether you feel that some proposal could be conceived which would be to the benefit of all the Maori people, and be unanimously recognised as such. Your comments in due course will be greatly appreciated. Yours sincerely, MORRIS.

Following his long period and interests in the Northern King Country, he has maintained generous support in the fields of wood chopping and horse sports. His father came to New Zealand with the Irish Regiment in 1856 and later took up a 150 acre bush lot at Te Mata. The family lived in a 20 x 15 slab hut with Totara shingles. Mr. McCracken's first offer of work came from the public Trust in Wellington, on a salary of 80-00 a year, plus 52-00 board. This he declined and then took his first job in paul's Book Shop in Hamilton. Throughout his life mcCracken has been a leader of men and has had a particular facility with Bushmen, Millers and his many Maori friends. When he first joined Ellis Burnand Limited at Mangapehi, he received 3-00 a week. His life-long association with the Company has resulted mainly from an understanding of staff, a facility to "pick the right man" and an insistence on fair play that has been paramount throughout his lifetime. The Company has grown up as almost "family" and is noted for the long service of its employees. Although occupied in the Sawmilling Industry, he has been a conservationist throughout and is one of this Country's most knowledgable personalities concerning Forest and Bird preservation, bushcraft and the outdoors. Mr. McCracken is regarded with a deep respect by all types of workers - from bushmen in the forests to the now sophisticated businessmen with whom he has dealt in more recent years. has been responsible for the happy solution of many Maori problems associated with the Maori Land Court and confesses to having drunk many hundreds of cups of tea with Maori people, carefully working out satisfactory settlements on a multitude of matters. As a citizen Mr. McCracken has the high respect of the whole of the community. He has been a willing and most active worker on any undertaking in which he has become involved. In 1915 he married Miss Winifred Johnson, who was a teacher at the Mangapehi School. He has a School Teacher son and his daughter is the widow of the late Editor of the Weekly News. April at U in the Vice-Chancellors office. Te Ata,hiri,Te lire and several others will be attending and they have asked ye to contact you in the hope that you might be able to be present also. The meeting is concerned with setting up and determining the nature of Maori representation on the advisory committee for the proposed Maori centre. I think Eddie rcLeod sent you a report of our preliminary discussions. I remember you commenting on the need for the language to be included in the teaching programme aed more specifically the need for beginning with the Tainui dialect first, I should mention at this ioint that Pare Hope, Bob '.(err and myself would all be interested in positions at the university should they be suitable and Bruce also strongly supports this move. I enclose a press cutting of statements made by Aussie Huata, and his proposals for his "Maori Federation of " to make active protests on Feb. 6. I have been invited by Graham Lattimer to meet the Maori Council on the marae on Saturday, 5 Feb., and am told that you hope to stage a debate between Matiu Pate and myself on the subject of making Naitangi a statutory holiday. - Personally I do not think your Council meeting is the correct venue to discuss party politics and to bid openly for votes - but if you wish it I will be there. I will he sorry if Huata and Eruera produce such a disturbance as to cause the Police to take direct action - but if some people wish to defy our normal standards they must take the conse7uences. You will be interested to hear that the oohutukawa tree at Cape Reinga has flowered this year, Graham Lattimer says for the first time in living memory - let us hope that this is an omen for good for we people who live in New Zealand. I have suggested to Graham that it is because I am to visit Tai Tokerau in February: My best wishes to you and Mrs Jones. Yours sincere/y. a.? Encl: Minister of Maori Affairs

I have had a poser put to me for authentic answer and am appealing to you for help as I know of no better authority. The Taringamutu Totara Sawmills Ltd was registered in 0 Wellington on 7th Sept. 1907. For many years the spelling of its place name, as well as the river, was sufficed 'auto' My Govt. litho print, dated November 1935, bears. this out. The queries are: 1. Prom when was the spelling changed to 'motu' 2. And why? Based upon the fact that your name is associated with the 1971 edition of the Williams language dictionary ix Maori I invested in a copy. Decidedly interesting. The dictionary references to both spellings are intriguing. Your answer to the above queries could be intriguing also ID because of a possible documentary value. I understand that nothing now remains of the old mill settlement. But my heart is still buried in the sawdust remains. I loved the place and its maori people. No. 1971/275 11P2 ZEALAI ID ,LGIS ANL: :LULLS TZLEPIIONE PPOIALE WELLINGTON. -6 D;IC 1911 ,2eference: MINISTER OF FORESTS IIP GROVE or POMADERRIS APETALA NEAR MOKAU RIVER 1. In a letter dated 14 October 1971 following your visit to the Kawhia District, you told me that you were shown a grove of trees approximately 20ft high which are called Tinui, growing just north of the iokau River. It was reported to you that this is the only known locality of this plant. You asked for confirmation of its limited distribution, Comment: 2. The plant you wore shown was almost certainly Tainui or Pomaderris anetala. The term Tinui. appears to be a corruption of the long-standing Maori name. According to the Botany Division, there arc only two known natural stands of Pomaderris apetala. A grove located between Mokau and Mohakatina Rivers was for many years considered to be the only stand of the species. It was first reported formally by Sir James Rector in 1879 who described a new species calling it Pomaderris tainui because of local 411 legend that the trees originated from parts of the Tainui canoe. He noted its resemblance to the Australian species Pomaderris apetala and later comparisons led to the view that our plant is in fact similar to the Australian species and should be placed with it botanically and termed Pomaderris apetala. I attach an 411 extract from the Transactions of the Institute (later Royal Society) volume 11, 28-429, issued in 1879 which describes the plant and some of the legend eurrcunding In 1955 a second group of plants vas discovered near Marokopa, Waitomo County. The grove you were shown appears to be a third stand of Pomaderris apetala. Likely sites along the west coast between okau and Kawhia have not been intensively explored botanically and other groves may well occur. There are few details available of the status of these groves of Tainui trees. It is suspected that the largest plants must be of considerable age and although they arc known to flower and presumably produce fruits nothing is known of the regeneration potential or the ecological requirements of the species. It is clear however that Tainui is not capable of rapid colonisation of new sites and consequently existing stands ere at rink through lass or damage 1,y fire, land development or other interference.

NO. 1 2. Dr E. Godley, Director of Botany Division comments that botanists have for a long time hoped that the Mokau grove(s) could be included in a reserve if for no other reason that this is the type locality of Rector's pomaderris tainui and must therefore be considered when relationships of New Zealand plants are questioned. In view of the strictly limited distribution and precarious existence of Pomaderris anetala and its significance both in Maori mythology and in botany 7Z strongly support any proposal to place one or more stands of this species in a scientific reserve. ihomSbn Director-General

AS YOUNG MAORIS COME MORE AND MORE FROM THE COUNTRY TO THE TOWNS THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MIXING WITH EUROPEANS ARE SO MUCH GREATER AND THE NATURAL RESULT OF THIS MEETING OF EQUAL CO-CITIZENE IS SEEN IN THE GROWING INTEGRATION OF THE RACES. THIS IS GOOD AND IT WILL GO CE. I DEPLORE THE ATTITUDE OF MIND WHICH LOOKS FOR INCIDENTS WHERE MISUNDERSTANDING OR CONFLICT ARISES BETWEEN MAORI AND PAKEHA AND THEN PROCEEDS TO MAGNIFY THIS INTO ALLEGED EVIDENCE OF RACISM. MISUNDERSTANDING AND CONFLICT ARISES FROM DAY TO DAY BETWEEN ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE BASED ON SOCIAL, ECONOMIC OR PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS.
