The next meeting of the Management Committee of the Incorporation will be on or about the 26th proximo. We will then fully discuss the matters touched on in your letter. In the meantime I desire to have the following points cleared up:- Tractors s W. have already approached Agents only to be told that we should see you first, and that the matter of the terms of payment and etc. were all settled by you. (In view of what you say we will again make further inquiries). Prices of Milling, Logs : I have made inquiries as to prices for milling logs and the price now quoted by Ellis Burnand is 10/- per 100 log measurement at Manunui. This is below their estimated cost of logging, which is 10/6 per 100 log measuroment.(Thie price of 10/6 includes the loggers profit for his risk in his operations.) The other millers are uncertain as to what prices they will pay. (Totara, of course, was not in question.) It would appear that an attempt is being made to ham-string the Incorporation with regard to milling logs. The demand for peelers is too keen to allow of the same action for this class of logs. We are told that the margin between logging costs and the wholesale fixed price of sawn timber is too small to permit of a higher price for milling loge. Furthermore, the millers say that their losses on logging to mills operating at a distance from the bush is only recoverable through their retail branches. This obviously means that we are expected to supply milling logs to Manunui at a loss, and to set off our losses against the price of peeler logs. Our only counter for this is to establish a mill of our own as soon as possible , and to get a price fixed for milling logs at a figure whioh will give a margin over logging costs. Dear Sir, I have to thank you for your letter of the 11th instant in connection with the working of timber on the abovementioned land. The next meeting of the Management Committee of the Incorporation will be on or about the 26th proximo. We will then fully discuss the matters touched on in your letter. In the meantime I desire to have the following points cleared up:- Tractors : We have already approached Agents only to be told that we should see you first, and that the matter of the terms of payment and etc. were all settled by you. (In view of what you say we will again make further inquiries). Prices of Milling Logs : I have made inquiries as to prices for milling logs and the price now quoted by Ellis Burnand is 10/- per 100 log measurement at Manunui. This is below their estimated cost of logging, whicn is 10/6 per 100 log measurement.(This price of 10/6 includes the loggers profit for his risk in his operations.) The other millers are uncertain as to what prices they will pay. (Totara, of course, was not in question.) milling logs to Manunui at a loss, and to set off our losses against the price of peeler logs. Our only counter for this is to establish a mill of our own as soon as possible , and to get a price fixed for milling logs at a figure which will give a margin over logging costa. Timber Requirements (1945) The monthly timber requiremente from the Incorporation, on your figures, are as follows:- (1) From 1/4/1945 Bd. The demand for peelers is too keen to allow of the same action for this class of logs. We are told that the margin between logging costs and the wholesale fixed price of sawn timber is too small to permit of a higher price for milling logs. Furthermore, the millers say that their losses on logging to mills operating at a distance from the bush is only recoverable through their retail branches. This obviously means that we are expected to supply

I have made inquiries on the matter and have the following comments to make. In connection with Smith it 13 obvious you have included peeler logs (which he resells) in his figures. In his case we propose to supply him with milling logs only. We will deal with the peeler logs ourselves. In Smith's case we also require an economic price for milling logs delivered to his mill. Wit,' regard to the "extra" quantities of timber the only firm who nave approached us with a stated quantity is the Hutt Timber and Hardware Co.; (who recently took an option to purchase Bishara's mill at Manunui) This firm I am now given to understand has since taken a bush from Smith in the Taringamotu Valley. Their monthly requirement was 200,000 Bd. Ft. montnly of milling loge. If they still want logs from us they will have to pay an economic price. The three directors who interviewed me stated that they did not know enough about milling costs to give a price. If this firm forego tneir option to purcnase we are prepared to deal with Mr. Bishara immediately and if the Timber Control permitted we would supply this firm with the greater part of the sawn output of the mill, for their Factory and yards in Wellington. It is noticeable that the milling interests do not appear to be perturbed about supplies of milling logs from us and we are curious to know how you propose we should dispose the quantities of timber set out above. On an estimated of say 40 peeler logs (which can readily be disposed of) in our burn we would have the following quantities of milling logs to dispose of t- (1) From 1/4/1945(Log measurement) Per month. Total monthly output (excluding Ellis Burnand, and, Smith.) Leas (Disposable as follows) Peelers 40 Surplus milling only. (2) From 16/T945 Total monthly output Less (Disposable as follows) (a) Peelers 40 510,000 (b) Milling Ellis Burnand, , say, 250,000 Smith, say 250,000 265, 000 Surplus, milling only, As we see it, the quantities given by you will require to be reconciled with the av4hilable capacity of the mills who need our milling logs, until such time as we commence Milling ourselves. On the information available to us there will only be 500,000ft. log measurement of milling logs disposable per month as from 16/5/1945 or a total of 3,750,000 to 31/12/1945. Adding the 40 peeler logs to this figure we get : Milling loge 3,750,000 3/5 of output 40 Peelers 2,500,000 2/5 " " b,2o0,000 So we reckon on 6,250,000 ft. log measurement, outside our own milling operations from 16/5/1945 to 31/12/1945. Your novice is now to the effect that you do not wish to make any ouch available but this is acceptaule only if - (1) Extra leas are made avaiiaole at a montnly rate of 2,0,000 feet Ocard measure by April the first next. (2) A still further sup4y of logs or sawn timber at the rate of 250,000 feet uoard measure monthly be made availaule not later tnan October 1st. 1945. This should dive you time to drug your contemplated mill into production if tnis is finally decided upon. Unless I have an undertaking to the above effect and arrangements are sufficiently sell in hand oy the 1st. Feoruary next to demonstrate that these objectives will be attained there will be no alternative for me out to secure the extra production by "Direction" sales in the usual way. The Forest 'Service does not accept any responsibility or liability for any advice tenuered to tie Incorporation and it must be treated in a purely voluntary manner tor wt it is worth.
