682Address by: MAORITAROA The Very itev..Leogeton. O. The keynote to Meoritange is the feet that the Maori rase has distinct racial personality end what we hove cone to term Meoritanga Is the expression of that distinctive racial personality in language, poetry mine art,?.! custom end usage, rite and ceremony, work end play. Mseritanga. emelt, is the recognition of that distinctive racial personality ene the secomoserint Pride of race and the eorresponding demand that the sacred rights of that racial personality shall be recognised end safeguarded. In the third plans, Meoritange is the action token to secure provision end satiattetion for that racial personality. There le of course, nothing singular in the nationalism of the Mori which is the expression of this entity shish we have come to call Iteorliange. Indeed, the 104neesti= of the pressures on life of modern elremmetences seems to have deepened this nett epirit everywhere. It le eertainly not oonfined, as is sometimes seaweed, to the coloured people of the world. A visitor to Scotland or Wales today will fled this spirit se =live and vocal as we have it here today in the demo= for the resolegtion end 9rtin cor our lisoritengs. Let us look at some of these components of the Maori heritage which are the substages of Meoritausge. First of all Language eon never to a ooincidenee. Rash roes has developed an express on Ai= is beau, gel in adequacy to frame its thought Promisees is the expression of its out very being. The form of a language le one of the indicationce of the resist spirit which gave it birth, and the limitation or the adequacy of a longest m e full vehicle of thought is an immediate indication of the vestal sigesity of the people whose utteranse it is. The Maori language es it woo before the advent of the white men was a very full and adequate expression of thought the world in which it was situated. The Maori language is widely stereelelmod bemuse of its beauty of expression, flowing so naturally as it does In similes end metaphoree figures of speech, but not only is it beautiful La thought plotures but it is beautiful in euphony. Ue wars partieelarly impressed in our sort on the revision of the Maori Bible with the fast that wherever a transliterated personal or place nose had =tab sound, Maori people had uniformly repeated that form and adopted =a that was ousical cud pleasant to the ear. Literary appreciation Is a widespread Maori endowment and even older Maori people who have had very little Parop en education have a keen sense of quality in the use of their own language. Literary taste in the keen appreciation of beautiful words is common to a high pommies, of the Maori people. The Maori is famed as an orator. That accomplishment lemons from the feet that the met of speech and the adequate mastery of epee= is recognised and valued attainment of the Maori people. An =cleat literary practice which telt we fear, fallen into disuse, was the gams of finding her mar sywnynec dhe stated for o given word. All these things denote She fast that longest in its comprehensiveness and fullness mad beauty la one of the treasured posseastome of the Maori rase mad the oorneeliteme of lisoritsage. A decadent people are likely to have decadent language. A people who see vital end full of progress are sure to esteem and develop the language ie supplies the tool-kit of thought, which conveys what is their indl vandal personality in the words end empressions which have been evolved to give utterance to their p rt/inlet thought and aspiration as ne other woods can do. vs) are well aware of She feet that there are some things Mash we ashy in Maori much acre effectively than they can be said in Knglish. These, of course, are esori matters end require Snort language for their 6eseription.It has been well said that the language La gar Maggot pempU'a-aoegy aad however mush need there may be, as is tree of the gramme ottemstam4 that a people should have a ocopetest knowledge of another language, should they lose their own tongue they have lost the most sacred immerd shrine of their being. Maoritange is the realisation of these things and the valuing of the most sacred heritage of the Memel person and rase, his lengeste. and the Maori certainly has in his language tresses of which he may well be,prood. I recall the present Bishop of Miasma testing so= lines from a MOOOMPONI in welcoming the Rev. Niles et easelin = Ps, Rgare rehle, last year, and then stating: "that is as fine poetry as Anything la rbskespears if it could be adequately translated", and there is no doubt whatever that both in its prose and in its poetry the Maori language has attained expression of very high and beautiful order. Part of the action of Meoritange undoubtedly is the' realisation end revaluation of the things that are distinctively MODPip, and outstanding in that category is the language which Is the very breath of . the Maori soul. v ii

It is surely notable that the Maori people, who had never bad the fortune to doll la oountry where metal maid Vs developed and who wore therefore limited to stone tools wherewith tree tallier ono fashioning and house building bed to be carried out with great labour, were not content to erote things of mere utility but in those untoward circumetesses lavished art on carved prow sod stern pests of the ?seam moo and on the door poets of the tribal houses, sad developed the arts of weaving and beautiful rood work. True-to-type Maoris do not live entirely for themselves, nor yet even in a orimary way to promote the advantage of their individual family, but to seek for the welfare of the whole tribe, end because a communal peren loves to have others about him and heoelee re true community people Maoris delight in giving service to the aommultY, hospitality is to the sort an exaltation and delight. no has no regrets if he spends on his guests the sbundeno which se would think Mould be retain. ad for the more soured sustenanee of his immediate dependents. All those who become intimately esquainted with Maori life are impressed with the delicate etiquette of true Maori deportment. The untutored zakeha is apt to transom's. mach Maori etiquette slyly bemuse he is en individualist end is not trained as the Maori to think La term of the community rather than of self. Thr community life of the tort is built round the coneept of the divine. It can truly be said of the ancient Maori thst he lived end moved and had his being in his gods. There are some today who fee/ that the wiping. out of this slender interest in the tribal /ands veld be selutorn thing in that it would burn the bridges ,f many sorts and compel thee to be Labelle. The preservation of coanunel being is the very genius of laoritanga nod the material corpus of commonity life le the communal ownership of the basis of lire, the tribal lard. That is why the Maori revels as he does in the Maori Land Court Immune it is the sanctuary ant protector of the writ of his community life w Loh 1s inseribed on his tribal landed heritage, and because his outlook Is communal the criterion is not Vn, else of hie share but the feet of his interest. It is for this reason that e me of us feel that the only right solution to the problem of the fragmentary title to meek Maori land is to restore all shah tussoottasio individual shores to the orfelmel 10014 eoassanal title to be farmed for the berafit of the tribe and not for any imidual told to retain tor ell the members of the tribe their "turangsweevae", their community right within the tribe. Let hie feel th t he has no longer any right in the tribal lands and he will never again be other than an alien haunted with the fear that those who have bosoms the owners may maks 'Re aha to take i konsin" "Whet right here you here?" These things are inherent in naoritangs rand utterly essential to its survival - the neori language, the neort arts and crafts, the Maori community life with its outlook and values, the inherent Maori plass for religion, and the Maori's retaining his inheritance in his tribal lend. Finally. it is fitting that we should say a weed regarding the preservation of ,nioritaaa lc,ic!, is num. other than the life of tie :.horn. And, of course, the first means of preserving Maoritansa la to manes whet it contains end how utterly essential it is to the laori, being the very roof. and life-blood of his being. :hen we know whet our heritage le and hew priceless it is, then surely we are the more moved to take measures for Its protection end preservation. Regarding the language, its inclusion in the university slender le some advance, and the feet that it is now taught, where possible, in high schools is another matter for gratlflostion, but there is little doubt that the dictum of time AAVans :gate is substantiated, that the preservation of the language rests with She young mothers who either croon to their little ones in the euphonious tonic of the ancestral language oV, es in many oases, the latest akeha jest hit. 1034Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, Townswomen's Guilds, etc., offers a varied service of public lectures and demonstrations, dress-snaking, home-making, nutrition and handcraft classes for women. The usual procedure is for the Federation or Provincial secretary to ask for their district to be included in the-programme for the year, first snaking reasonably sure of a response sufficient to justify allocation of time. Programmes are usually organised in conjunction with the Country Women's Co-ordinating Committee and in co-operation with local organisations. In addition, the services described in the Correspondence Section following are available to all women. CORRESPONDENCE WORK. From the Sarah Anne Rhodes Office, Massey College, Palmerston North, the following Correspondence Courses are sent out. A. Box Lecture Scheme. Each box contains a type-written lecture illustrated by. samples, pamphlets, charts, and books. The box is sent to a group, usually by rail, about a week before the meeting and must be returned as soon as possible after the meeting. The leader of the group is responsible for receiving the box, conducting the. meeting, checking the contents of the box and returning it to Massey College. Groups select from the list the boxes required for their year's programme. usually one a month, though some groups prefer two, and any desired number may be taken. Alternatively a group may use only an occasional box. Fe ,s for Boxes: Members pay 1/- each per year, that is if a group has 10 members the fees amount to 10/- per year. The group also pays return railage. For a sample or occasional box the charge is 1/6. (Railage is at quarter rates?about 6d. a box?if A. Library Exchange is mentioned.) Groups may secure particulars of the Box Scheme by writing direct to the Sarah Anne Rhodes Office for information and list of boxes available. The boxes available cover Homemaking, Crafts, Dressmaking and Miscellaneous subjects. B. Ten Minute Short Talks. We can send one or a series of short talks on subjects such as the following: War-time Food and Balanced Meals. The Minerals and Their Place in Nutrition. Vitamins and the Result of Vitamin Underfeeding. The Prevention of Goitre. Iron and Anaemia. Milk in Adult Nutrition. The Bread Question. Cookery Methods. Large-quantity Cooking (recipes included). Drying Fruits and Vegetable for War-time Use. Keeping Household Accounts. (Talks together with illustrative material must be returned.) The fee for each talk is 8d. f stamps can be sent). For groups belonging to a box group no charge is made for the talk when it is sent in place of a box. C. Correspondence Course in Pattern-cutting. This consists of eight lessons. Fee 5/- per member. Pattern-cutting schedules available at 1/6 per copy. Printed by Talon Printing Company, Wellington

1578AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLIEGE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY ANNUAL REPORT, 1953 (1) Staff; Professor: Dr. Ralph Piddington Lecturer in Social Anthropology: Dr. Geddes Lecturer (Part-time) in Primitive Economics and Technology: Mr. Scobie, Lecturer (Part-tine in Physical Anthropology: Dr. S. Taylor. Junior Lecturer in Maori Language: Mr. Biggs, (2) Appointments and Awards: Dr. Geddes has been promoted to the status of Senior Lecturer as from 1st February 1954. Mr. Jack Golsen, of Cambridge, England, has been appointed Lecturer in Prehistory. He expects to take up his duties in February. Mr. Nayacakalou has been awarded a Pre-doctoral Fellowship by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Now York. Miss Metge has been awarded a Science Research Fellowship of the University of New Zealand. The undergraduate College Prize in Anthropology for 1952 was awarded to Miss Phyllis Scott. (3) Staff and Graduate Research: (a) During the year Dr. Geddes has been engaged on subsidiary studies arising out of his field-work in Sarawak; on the revision of unpublished work on culture change in Fiji; and in the collection of material on Maori social structure. In February he made a survey tour of Maori communities in Taranaki. He plans a trip to Fiji and the New Zealand dependencies early in 1954. (b) Mr. Biggs, having used cyclostyled copies of the text of his Maori Reader with a class of students this year, is completing preparations for its publication in 1954. The collection of tape recordings has been enlarged by recordings from Tuhoe, Arawa, and Wanganui dialect areas. Recordings from other Pacific areas, including Tikopia, Tonga and Fiji, have also been made. Miss Metge is continuing her research on the Urban Maori living in Auckland. In addition to compiling and analysing statistics and carrying out a survey of the main centres of Maori population in Auckland, she has concentrated for purposes of intensive field work on two areas. Her object has been to collect information concerning (1) the reasons for, and methods of, the migration of Maoris to the city; (2) the size of families, the number and occupation of wage-earners, and the living conditions of Maori families; (3) the type and frequency of contact with Maori relatives in the country, with other Maoris in the city and with the urban pakeha population. Miss Helene Newbrand has completed her preliminary study of the Maori language, and now holds a temporary teaching appointment in the Department of Speech, University of Hawaii. Compiling a personal journal of observations and experiences while living among the Maori people. Mr. William Cottrell concluded his survey of a Maori community in the vicinity of Auckland and returned to the A. in November. Mr. Arlo Giles of the University of Oregon arrived in Auckland in July for a period of study under a Fulbright award. He is accompanied by Mrs. Giles. They are at the moment studying a Maori community in the Bey of Plenty area. Yr. Edward I. Fry (University of Harvard) and Mrs. Peggy C. Fry (University of Texas) are also holders of Fulbright awards. They spent a short period of study in New Zealand before leaving to carry out research in Anthropology and Nutrition in the Cook Islands. (h) Mr. Nayacakalou is at the moment studying at Auckland University College in preparation for his research on the impact of economic change on Fijian culture under the terms of his award from the WennerGren Foundation. He will commence his field work in Fiji early in 1954. (4. ) Maori Research Conference A conference of anthropological research corkers on Maori problems was held in the Department of Anthropology from 11th to 15th May 1953. The reasons for holding the conference were as follows: During the past tae years a considerable amount of attention has been devoted by staff and associates of this Department and by others to Maori problems. Much of the work done has been of an uncoordinated kind or has consisted of superficial surveys and discussions with various persons who are well informed on Maori topias. It was felt that the time had come for a systematic review of research work already done and the consideration of possible research projects for the future. Problems of methodology and organization also demanded attention. It was thought that the sort of review which was necessary could best be carried out by a small group, the members of which were actively engaged on scientific research on Maori problems in anthropology or closely related social sciences. The membership of the conference was as follows: Staff of the Department: Professor Piddington, (Chairman), Dr. Geddes, Mr. Biggs, Mr. Scobie. Associates of the Department: Kiss Metge, Miss Helene Neabrand and Mr. W. Cottrell. Other Research Workers: Mr. Booth, Research Officer, Department of Maori Affairs; Mr. K. Sinclair, Senior Lecturer in History, Auckland University College; Mr. Walters, Lecturer in Philosophy, Auckland University College; Mr. Watson, Lecturer in Education, Auckland University College. Note: Mr. Haight, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, Auckland University College, though he did not attend the conference, kindly consented to act as consultant on statistical questions. The conference consisted of a series of discussions each of which was initiated by one or too members, as follows: 1. Introductory Discussion (Professor Piddington) 2. Maori Historiography (Mr. Sinclair) 3. Introduction to Maori Demography (Miss Metge and Mr. Watson) 4. Review Discussion: Beaglehole and Peaglehole, Some Modern Maoris (Miss Metge) 5. Segmentation in a Maori Community (Mr. Booth) 6. A Contemporary Bast Coast Farming Community (Mr. Higgs) (e) (f) (g)

16423. (5) Preliminary Observations on a Market Gardening Community (Mr Cottrell) Research among the Maoris living under Urban Conditions in the City of Auckland (Miss Metge) Present-day Implications of Maori Technology (Mr. Scobie) Areas for Research in Maori Education (Mr. Watson) Maori Education - An Historical Outline (Mr. Biggs) Some Psychological Problems in Maori Studies (Mr. Walters) Some Possibilities of Interdisciplinary Research (Mr. Cottrell) The Bearing of Maori Research on Contemporary Social Problems (Dr. Geddes) Note: Roneo summaries of some of the discussions are or will shortly be available from the Department (see Section 10 below). Teaching: There has been no significant change from last year in regard to numbers and quality of students, except for the inauguration of the Stage III course, which was taken by ten students. The course for and Honours in Anthropology will be given for the first time in 1954. A second year course in Maori Studies has been instituted and will be given for the first time in 1954. The course covers (a) Maori Language and Culture: Comparison with other Polynesian areas, (b) More advanced study of Maori language, literature and traditional lore and (c) Further study of Maori history, poetry, art and technology. (6) Standard of students: As this subject is a perennial topic of discussion, it may be appropriate to offer some comparison between teaching experience here and in Scotland. In attempting to give my impressions of the broad differences between students at Auckland and in Edinburgh, I am not concerned with the very best or the very worst who behave after the manner of their kind everywhere. I am concerned with the "average" students, though I am aware of the pitfalls involved in thus hypostatizing a "modal academic personality". As regards academic proficiency, Edinburgh students are definitely superior though not overwhelmingly so. They have a greater capacity for organizing their knowledge arts expressing it clearly and systematically in essays and examination scripts. This is in part due to a better mastery of English, but perhaps even more to their concentration on passing examinations. Tell them that they must read up to page 276 of a certain book for an examination and they will do so thoroughly and systematically. But the mediocre Edinburgh student who will so much U3 g/ance at page 277 is a rarity. On the other hand the reading of Auckland students tends to be wider, if more diffuse and unsystematic. They are more ready to depart from the path prescribed for them, to essay original criticisms, and to introduce material not obviously relevant to the course as laid down in lectures and text books. Such digressions meet with varying degrees of success, but they do at least show that the students are thinking for themselves and not subscribing to an academic authoritarianism. Auckland students have also a wider if vaguer conception of their academic studies in Anthropology. They tend to view them as one of the ways in which wider human problems may be approached. I have always made it a point, so far as present teaching conditions permit, to encourage students to come voluntarily to informal tutorials and discussions with my colleagues and myself. The object of these meetings is emphatically not to give students more of what they get from lee lures and text books ? they are rather the starting points for discussions on wider social issues from the specifically anthropological point of view or for a simple treatment of more advanced material not to be covered in the forthcoming examinations. In fact the students themselves largely guide the discussions, provided that they are not obviously fishing for examination "tips". In regard to these tutorial meetings I find students in Auckland considerably more responsive than those in Edinburgh, where I occasionally had to remind tutorial groups that me were in a University and not a Trappist cone,.

1674There are various factors which may be operative here. Firstly, the egalitarian tradition of New Zealand makes students more ready to voice their opinions in the face of possible professorial disapproval. Secondly, the frequent contacts :of "European" students with Polynesian and Melanesian students and fellow-citizens makes the teaching of Anthropology much easier in Auckland, because students ;come to their studies with a spontaneous interest, based on personal experience, in non-European peoples. Thirdly, the large proportion of part-time students at Auckland means that there is a greater leavening of minds with experience outside school and University, even though the difficulties under which they labour affects adversely their purely academic work. But I believe that the main factor determining the differences scribed is the lack, in New Zealand, of emphasis on mere academic proficiency. While this has its unfortunate side, it does allow for spontaneous development of wider interests. Certainly there is, in my view, no foundation whatever for the oft-repeated charge of "immaturity" against students at Auckland University College. What has been said does not, of course, imply that we should not aim at improving the standards of purely academic cork in New Zealand. The aim should be to have the best of both worlds. As regards the present position, the balancing of the respective merits and demerits of Scottish as against New Zealand students is largely a matter of personal evaluation. To one who prefers to teach students rather than people who only want to pass examinations, the balance is slightly but definitely in favour of New Zealanders. (7) :Some Lighter Moments: From examination scripts: "Sex totemism is found in parts of Eastern Australia. The men have the bat as their totem and the women have the wood. pecker. Each sex respects not only its own totem, but also that of the other. A quarrel breaks out if a man kills a woodpecker or vice versa." "In evolution, the ability to talk must have been a great advantage to a Homo sapien." "Tane, god of forests, used his supernatural power to produce all the verbiage which now covers New Zealand." (8) Applied Anthropology: Negotiations with Government Departments on the scheme for training and research in applied anthropology have for the moment broken down. The difficulty has been the financial provision necessary to allow for additional 'staff and facilities. The Departments concerned were interested in a much mere modest scheme than that proposed, involving very little in the way of additions to the existing staff and facilities of the Department of Anthropology. The view of this Department is that the sort of intensive and "tailor made" courses, with a specific orientation toward strictly practical problems, could not satisfactorily be given as a by-product of routine academic teaching in which practical issues are merely one facet (though an important one) of anthropology as a general cultural discipline. It is hoped that negotiations may be resumed at some date in the future. (9) Auckland University College Maori Club, Students at Auckland University College have recently formed a Maori Club. The term "Maori" is used in its more general sense as applying to all indigenous inhabitants of the Pacific, though the main focus of interest will for obvious reasons be on the New Zealand Maori. Membership of the club is :open to all members of the College who are interested in the indigenous cultures of the Pacific, and includes several Pakehas and Melanesians. The activities of the club so far have included a welcome with action songs and hakes to visitors from the southern colleges attending the annual athletic tournament, and the entertainment of members of the crew of the mission ship "Southern Cross". The latter was a multi-lingual event and included speeches and songs in Maori, Tikopian, Tongan, and Fijian.
