144Foreword With this volume Dr. Pei to Hurinui Jones completes the task of re-editing and translating the traditional songs and chants collected earlier by Sir Apirana Ngata. Maoris, especially, must always be grateful to these two devoted scholars who, to paraphrase Ngata's own words, observed the treasures in their midst, and gathered them, and preserved them to us. All New Zealanders will be grateful for Hurinui's translations, which open to them the portals of another way of life, now gone for ever. It should not be thought that the song collection of which this is the third volume exhausts the store of Maori poetry. Dr. Mervyn McLean, at the University of Auckland, has compiled an index of published Maori song texts listing more than 5,000 items, the great majority of which have neither been competently edited, nor translated. This index does not include song texts from the extensive manuscript collections held in our libraries, some of which have been indexed by Simmons of the Auckland Museum. Neither McLean, nor Simons have included modern song texts, and extensive collections of these have been compiled by Dr. Douglas Sinclair and others. And everywhere in Maoridom, song texts, old and not so old, are preserved in countless family whakapapa books and, more importantly, on the lips and in the memories of the people. A great deal has happened in the field of traditional Maori music since I wrote the introduction to part II of Nga Moteatea, nine years ago. The University of Waikato has recognised, with academic honours, the value of Dr. Jones'

Tne long awaited ethnomusicologist specialising in Maori music, Dr. MervyiMcLean who was trained at Otago University and has since done post-graduate research at American universities, has been appointed Senior Research Felice; at the University of Auckland where he is in charge of a newly formed Archive of Maori and Pacific Music. The archive's holdings are already extensive, with Dr. McLean's own magnificent collection of Maori and Cook Islands music added to the nucleus built up by the Maori Studies branch of the Anthropology Departuenr over the years. It is especially gratifying that, besides adding to the collection steadily, the Archive is already receiving requests from individuals and groups,(for access to recordings held by the Archive. Wherever there are no restrictions imposed by the original performers such requests are gladly met. It seems appropriate here to summarise the publishing history of Nga Moteatea: in 1851 Sir George Grey published a collection of 507 Maori song texts, plus some prose selections, under the title Nga Moteatea me nga Hakirara o nga Maori. A second edition was published in 1853. In his introduction Grey mentioned that 'translations of the greater portion of the poems and traditions contained in this volume have already been prepared with the intention of publishing them at sane future date.' They were never published. tn 1857 Grey published another, smaller collection of songs under the title Ko nga Waiata Maori. Again no translations were offered. In 1924, Ngata began publishing the texts of Maori songs, with accompanying explanations in Maori, as supplements (t5piri) to Te Toe Takitini. In 1928 the ninety songs so

206published were issued separately under the title Nga Moteatea: he maramara rere no nga wake maha Part I (Second Impression). Ngata continued to publish songs in the supplements to a Toa Takitini (later renamed Te Reo o Aotearoa) and in 1929 part II of Nga Moteatea appeared, containing a further 110 songs. In 1944-45 Ngata published English translations of the first 19 songs of Nga Moteatea, Part I, together with revised versions of the Maori texts and commentary. These appeared as supplements to volumes 53 and 54 of the Journal of the Polynesian Society. During the years 1948-51 Ngata published songs 201 to 270 as supplements to volumes 57, 58 and 60 of the Journal of the Polynesian Society. A few offprint copies were also issued. Ater Ngata's death in 1950, the work of collecting, annotating and translating traditional Maori sons and poetry was continued by Pei to Hurinui Jones. During the years 1954-57 revised texts and commentaries, and translations of the remainder of part I (songs 20 to 90) were published as supplements to the Journal of the Polynesian Society, volumes 63-66. The whole of Part I was then issued as Polynesian Society Maori Text No. 1. An economy edition minus the introductory sections was also issued when a number of offprints of the original printing in the Journal were discovered at the printers.
