ANNUAL AtPORT which had already been circulated was adopted on the motion of Mr. Gillespie seconded by Dr. Schohfield. The Chairman proposed that a cordial letter be sent to Mr. Heenan expressing appreciation of hie great personal interest in the work of the Committee and the assistance he had given to it at its initiation. The proposal was seoonded Dy kr. Schroder and carried. ELEGTIVN uP CHAIRMAN: Cm the motion of Professor Gordon mionded by hr. Gillespie, I. Seholefield was unanimously elected chairman. In reply to a question from Mr. Gillespie Sir Janes stated that he was not standing for the position, also in view of the numerous offices he was holding he proposed withdrawing from membership of the ocenittee, and also from other non medical organisations he is connected with. Lh the motion of Professor Gordon seconded by Dr. Schdefield it eas decided to place on reword the Bommittoes appreciation of the work dons by Sir James Elliott, whose driving force had been responsible for the establiehment of the committee and the large amount of work done up to the present. The motion wee carried with acclamation. Sir James thanked the members for their remark. and observed that the N. would have to nominate one of its members in kis plane es a member of the oommittee. GANERALI Mr. Heenan was then invited to be present at the meeting. The chairman thanked him for his whole-hearted on-operation in the work of the oommittee. In reply, Mr. Heenan remarked that although the committee had not spent the full amount of money allocated, it had shown oamnendable oar, in "vetting' of applioations. The wide variety of literary interest in the grants made wee also vary satisfaotory. However, he would like to see the oommittee showing mactouragement to younger writer, whose books had not yet been published. Even so, one of the committee's reooarmndationa regarding the re-publication of Mr. Holoroft's Eases. in Omnibus form wan a splendid move. He hoped the ocumittee would oontinue to expand in its work, and even if it over spent the allocation it was quite probable that the annual grant would be increased. In reply to a question by Hr. Gillespie, Mr. Heenan stated that he had overcome the difficulty of delays in the payment of reader. His Department hed now authority to pay immediately. The only hold up had been in the case of Mr. Taylor, who, being a public servant, had to have the authority of the Public Service ckmaiaaioner before payment could be made. This did not mean that there would be any objection to Public Servants acting as readers and reoeiviNitemo. secretary. </pre>
