Box 78, TAUMAsUNUI. k4th. September, 18kb The Right Honourable W. Nash, Parliament Buildings, abLLTON. Dear Mr. Nash, High Commissioner in London and/ or Ambassador in Washington. Bishop Panapa was my guest last week-end, and we talked about the subject matter of this letter during a fireside talk on the current topic of apartheid. The subject osme up in a discussion on the unfortunate incident concerning the treatment received by Dr Bennett shortly after hie brother's appointment to the Malayan post; and also a recent report of some carping criticism in the press of Malaya, to the effect that Colonel Bennett'. appointment would have been more worthwhile, as a demonstration of racial equality in New Zealand, if it had been made to a European country. During our talk His Lordship said he had seen a good deal of the Colonel during the Lambeth Conference, and that he (the Bishop) had been disappointed the Colonel's studies for his doctorate had been interrupted. His Lordship thought the Malayan post could have been filled by my brother Michael for say two years, by which time the Colonel could have completed his studioe and Michael would have reached the retiring age from the Public Service. om this point in our talk we ranged over a wider field and we discussed the two vacant posts noted as heading to this letter. The Bishop and I agreed that in the present posture of affair. it would be an excellent thing if Michael was appointed, for the remaining period of his term in the Public service, to one or other of the two poets, preferably - on account of the apartheid problem - to the Ilashington poet. My impression is that the difficult problems of our Maori people have now been mostly satisfactorily dealt with, and Michael's present position can be filled by one of the senior Maori officers in the Department. At this stage in Michael's career I think, his long and varied experience in burin public affairs and in the public Service; and his sound judgement, hie cool and oala temperament under all circumstances make him the ideal man at the moment for the appointment suggested. I feel sure the country will benefit and the Government will have no regrets if such an appointment was made. Bishop Panapa said at the end of our talk that ha would speak to you about this matter at the first opportunity. At present His Lordship is touring the nalkato Diocese and may not ,a seeing you for several weeks. This letter has not been an easy one to write because of my brother being involved, but the subject I felt was of such importance that I have disregarded my misgivings as to the propriety of communicating with you. I trust, Sir, that you will not think it presumptions on my part to have written you this letter. Yours sincerely, 6i;'42 </pre>

Box 8, iAUMARUNUI. 1,ocembor, 12, 1959 Dear Rrio, John Graoe's "Tuwharetoa" has come to hand. My bookseller told me it was a second uniting, although there is no printer's note on uy copy of it ,being a second imprint. If itr a second edition it would look as if the Dominion's review of it us "dull reading' has only wetted the appetite of the reading public. Or is it the very fine sot of photographs from page 256. I have a very good knowledge of the tribal history of the tribe, yet I found it very tedious Going to follow the story of the tribe on account of the many digressions John make. into the stories of the surrounding tribes. And many of these digressions are only re-presentations of accounts that havo been previously tehdrdn4 madeAd-bloondWis writers. Actually he takes 90 pages before he introduces the eponymous ancestor of the tribe at Chapter 9. lo my mind the proceaing chapters should havo been compressed into a ohapter or two - one about the Arawa and tho other about the Matatua, because of the Tuwharetoa people boingxture of these two oanoe areas. A good genealogical table7hei/these lines are merged into the Puwharetoa would have boon helpful at that stage. The story,as it is,stdrted off as if it was going to be the story of To Arawa. As a digression of my own, I should tell you that the set up of "Tainui", whioh was to have been Los Kelly's book and mine ( I started it years before I met Lea), was my idea. And to get a proper sequence I studied tribal genealogies of our people, compared lines of contemporaries in our tribal traditions, and then adopted a tablu of dates. lou might, perhaps be surprised at this disclosure about"Tainui." but if one were to patose and think of bow Les could have possibly seen and spoken to the elders, and at the same time earned on in his job on the Now Zealand Railway., it will be realised that it was a sheer impossibility. I collaborated with him because of his keen interest in tribal history, and ho was a very good typist ( At one time, so he told me, he was on the reporting staff of the Auckland "sun" newspaper. to used to come up to my home at io iiulti during weekends and sometimes at nights during the week, and ha would take away my manuscripts to type. (by Las are now with Dr Brume BiGga, Lecturer in Maori, Auckland) Our plan in our collaboration was to have the book both in Maori and ialglish. Bruce is finding my MSS very interesting and useful in his work at the University. My move to Rowena , when the work was almost complete except for checking up with Percy Smith's History of the Taranaki Coast of which wo did not have a copy in To guiti. I was in touch with Les right up to when the book was published, and he never let on what ho was up to. It resulted among other things in some bad translations of songs WILUV4 1 Lad mot Lad a a..co to check on my first drafts. Les could never look me in the eye, and when To Puea realised what had happened, he became persona non grata at Kgaruawahia. 2o oe's preface was written by Lee, and as she knew and had often heard me discussing the history with old Peha , Moore and the others she assumed evrything was alright, until she saw the book. At the first page of his preface (7) in the second paragraph , John says "To do justice to tie story of Taupe and it. tribe I have obtained and examined as many versions as has been possible; but have included all variations would have </pre>

According to my idea it would have been better to have put in the variations, rather than pack his book with stories from all over the place. The variations after all belong to the tribal history and should have gone into the book. As an indication of how he has digressed, wo find in various accountst The hinemoa Story - which need not have been told so fully. It would have been sufficient to relate the story about the paternity of Putanekai, and the "the rest of the story is well known. Hawke! Bay troubles are brought in at some length, all because the fuwharetoa people make a raid or two int., the district. fe Rauparahals story is told at length to stretch out the account of a hurried rush of the Taupe people to help Te Rauparaha against his former allies, the Ati Awa at the battle of Te horo. There are many others - almost whole chpters of them -like these. But , of course, what John has his mind on most of the time is to emphasis. and re-emphasise the senior lines of his branch of the tribe, and ho hints that if they had their dues the paramount chieftainship of the tribe should be with them. Already the book has been the subject of sharp criticism from tho older members of the To Heuheu clan, As a matter of fact I have an early typescript which John gave to a friend of mine to palish my ( My friend is an ) but he wouldnt be bothered he said be caulse it was about someone elsets tribe, and ho gave it to me. John has probably forgotten about it, because my friend never asked for it back, e copy I have has very little resemblance in language to the finished book, so John managed the polishing up in his own way. Tho version I have was condemned by Api because of the extravagant langtage John used - especially about the Naati Hotu being "annihilated" at battle after battle, and yet they still shpwed plenty of fight after three generations of annihilation et the hands of :;gati ruwharetea. The story of Kgati Hotu has been re-written in the book. I dont like the way he tells the story of the Maori King movement, He has a disarming way of tolling it, too, which makes it difficult for me to toll you where I disagree with him and where I think he has gone well astray. My book on Potatau I think will be a good counter to lie story. ;he eaikato wont like being described as "timid" p. 457. John has not really been in touch with the Maori world, and for him to say that the Ngapuhl "have never supported the Kina Movement to this day"" will not be acceptable to thq, nonclpstutaonga (He,emg,F-I136-- Waitangi Royal Roception)TkLICAT7Pso Table 18 at 9 of my "Tapeka" souvenir booklet. At bottom of p, '.45 he gives eaikato as one of the tribes represented at a meeting at Hawkey Bay. This is absolutely wrong. Finally representative alders from among the visitors joined in to back us up , much to the consternation of the old 'die-bards', and it was finally decided that the King's flag would be flown on the eigtb, and the celebrations (sports etc.) would bo held on the .eek-end preceding or following. </pre>

The old-time spirit of the ohu voluntary group of workers has been taken to heart by the younger member:: of the Mgati :tore hapu of Ngati Muniapoto. During the passing days and more particularly at weak-ends willing hands have been painting the commemorative carvings depicting mythological and ancestral figures on the not, pillars, the carved interiorotvp,ELa front pillar and poutioa rear pillar, the two pou-toko-manawa free standing pillars along the kauhanga-nui centre-way, the end walls supporting 2LE boards, the kowhaiwhai designs on the tahuhu ridge-board, and also the heke rafters. The ohu working group decided at the outset that out of regard for the original house builders the colour scheme they had used should be retained. The use of an approved shade of kokowai red which had been suggested was rejected. the spirits of their ancestors approve of the decisions made, and this has added strength and okill to the ohu. They feel confident that if Maniapoto tribal pride it aroused and assiotance for the purchase of necessary materials is forthcoming their work will proceed smoothly to the end. The work on the poupou pillars has been completed, and the painting of the hoke rafters and the tahuhu ridge-board is now in progress. Already, at this stage of the work, the result iu moot utriking. You need have no mismivinrs regards your criticism it is of the type which I welcome and which will be of great assistance to mcf: I only wish I had received your kindly advice at anocrlier stage. By way of explanation regarding some of your remarks I may say that I had in the fleet place intended only to record the Tainui history from the time of Hoturoft until the King rovement as I feared the large amount of material which I had on hand would make the cork too lenrthy. However, , I lator thought it hotter to make mention of the doings in ."" ,Hawaiki in the form of an introduction. On this account the A4- reference to Kuue is therefore slight. You will observe that I hove made no mention of Tawho-i's legend for the same reason. Again, should I deal fully with the Hawaikian angle I should probably find myself faced with a greater task tnan that of the post migration period. I have, however, often node enouiries regarding the Tainui tr,ditions of Hq alki but have had very little success. Lastly, to return to tape, I fear at the moment, I have nothing now to aid that would help to clear the rather vexed question as to whther there were two men of that name or not. The best I could do, perhaps, would be to mention the respective traditions and point out the difference in the generations between the periods. I have a record of authorities which I had intended to embody in a list of acknowledgements tut these as you suggest, would be bettor placed throurhout the text. The account of Taumatawiwi is an amended version ef Cudgeon's story. I went over his account with Remi Yukutai and carefully noted Remi's variations. The old fellow stated that the Ngoti-ripe story was that a messenger from Nmati-Hatta came by way of roramarua informinr them of the intended at,,} on the faeces people. As a result Waikato marched and ,oined Ngati-Hnua. Rent gave the following ':alts sto chiefs as having token pert In the action. Tiriwa, Hausuru, Kukutai and Nini. He concluded by saying that Waikato and Ngati-asua would have suffered defeat but for the assistance of Nesi-To-RanEi. In reference to the chronological arrangement, I worked on whekapapa with the result that some events come in between donnected stories. I might add that the arrival """" at approximate dotes proved a most tedious task. I first q?,?, e4,,AP4 checked over the various tables paying due retard to the (number of females as compared with the number of males. from 011, 1550 allowing 25 years to a generation. I then proceeded down the various tables watil I arrived nt people wh, were contemporaneous with each other. You would, no doubt, have 41, been surprised at some of the results I obtained. </pre>

I really cannot any just how many times I was forced to go over and over /train before I was any like satisfied. I then commenced checking backwards from men whose periods of time were known, Potatau, To Kaunngaanra and so on. Again on. reaching the position on the tahle where I had checked from above I disoovered I was generations out. Then again, the number of generntions in the draws line as compared with the Tainui line brought forward another problem. This in turn brought forward the vexed question as to nether Hoturoa, Hotuope, Hotua hio and Hormatapu, wore really generations or brothers. Te Aoteranci states that they were brothers whereas most whakapapa experts today give them as generations. I remember talking over this very question with Aehe at Te Kuiti. After mentioning Pomarc and Te Aoterongi as contending that the various Hotu's were brothers and pointing out the Arson difference, I asked his opinion. Ache would have none of it and after contemning the others as being taught incorrectly, he proved to his own antierection that the Hotu's were generations, by 474,9\_1!. ,,t reciting his whakapapa in Waiata form. This argument is One wiawhich could to dolt with more fully. Do you agree? One of the reasons why I have perhaps ignored accounts of other tribes was that I thought it best to avoid the repetition ,/dattd, already published accounts. 1 was perhaps, placing too much on the, gatherinr of now material. Of , course I myself have to exercise great care for fear that my 44,a0WAIITainui informants are not railty of the same offence. In fact Citd. While talking of Hatonga it brings to mind a rather vexed question. ,Erati-Eaniapoto whakapapas give what is to me an error. They give Toi as being before Tawhaki thus. The Neati-raniapoto table went on from Tawhaki several generations and come to Te Kuraimonoa who was supposed to be a contemporary of Tot. In feat I hove one Arawa table supplied by George Graham showing To as being a wife of Toi. This apparent error I pointed out to Te Tahuna Herawi and eaed that if Toi lived at the time of Te Kuraimonca, a descendant of Tawhaki, how then could he account for his table placing Toi as Tawhaki's ancestor. Te Taiwan informed me that he had never considered that angle iffe but now that I had pointed it out he thought I was correct. The same whakapapa wow vouched for by Pepone aetone and Hone Hetete. There is another portion of the Tainui history which I have considered well worthy of enlarging and that is the part played by the tangata-, enua. Apart from the final extermination at Atiamuri I have been unable to ring to lirht anything new and always find myself going back to the already published material in the "Kauae-rarou which after all was not from Tainui authorities at all. The actual extermination of these people in so far as the Tainui tribes were concerned was however, an important part of their colonization and I should perhaps have stressed it wore. The gap in the history which exists from the time of the settlement down to say rotai, has also caused me some misgivings. EPrents of importance other than actual wars, must no doubt, have taken place during that period. Do you think it would be fitting to insert there a description of the Tainui territory? The account dealing with Wharetiki was obtained from Schnackenb rr and from i;rs. Pareururangi Downs, the actual waiata being from Te Kanawa of Kawhia. I should he honoured if you would spare some of your valuable time and look it over. The compiling of history is a tedious task and in spite of the greatest care, errors must, no doubt, creep in. In this respect I should be only too pleased, should you discover any, for you to point them out. You will observe that the is not quite complete. There are two whakapapa tables, two maps and several photographs yet to be sent down but this will be ready before long. Tainui and its history has, I feel, been neglected too long, in spite of the efforts of John ,.'bite and others. It is in fact, in danger of being lost for all time, unless some effort is made to place it on record. As it is, the material gathered by me is not from one Mat, tut history gathered in little bits from first one kaumatua and then another. In fact, I feel I can say with confidence that no man in Tainui today knows the history of the tribe in anythinr like its complete form.
