134TAWHIAXITYNANGI ATTACKS NOA-FUNI AT TAWATAWKITI. Igo The eireumstances which led to Waikato making war against the people of Nee-Pahl originated in one of the numerous disputes which arose between that tribe and their neighbours, the NgatiWhatua, over land situated on the tribal borders. Natters were brought to a head when lige-Pahl, under a chief named Ueoneone, occupied a portion of land which was claimed as Weati- Whataa territory. Presumably at the invitation of the latter tribe. Tawhinkiterangi became embroiled in the dispute. and Waikato sent a war party to assist Neeti-Whatua. who, it will be remembered, were distant kinsmen of the Tainni folk through the previous marriages of Kaki. The arrival of Waikato sew the commencement of active operations against Asa-Puhi. landing at Tawatewhiti, near Vhangarel, Tawhiakiterenel attacked village after village heavily defeating the local people in each case. Finally Waikato suoeeeded in beseiging TTeoneone in one of his villages. Surrounding the pa, Vaikato built several shelters and then awaited the result. The p.:Isition of Ueoueone and his people became desperate and it seemed certain that the pa would fall to the invaders. Ueoneene therefore awaited his opportunity It and one defy, observing Tewhiakiterangi standing same distance te from the rest Of his warriors, made overtures to him and called t e- out, "}:shore ano i ki to puke?" "Is your stomach not full yet?" fTftwhiakiterrngi then decided to spare his enemies and replied. #:' "Kart tika tau. Tirohia atu. Ka kite koe I to peon, kua moh/0 /roe. ee, "Ton are right. Look yonder. When you,see the smoke, you shall know (that X am leaving you in peace)" 4.: 3 , 4. Is:
