1864\_.// IrC WAIKATO M.:Ff.:AT RANalTUKE. April or ray. 1827. In spite of the fact that Poeare, on meeting his death at Te Rore, had really only met with the fete whioh he deserved, having been warned by his own people not to break the peace following Latakitaki, some sections of Rga-Puhi were not satisfied to allow his death to pass unavenged, and accordingly a war party, under Rangituke of Paihia, set cut for 'i;nikato. For come days they lingered et Whangarei making their final preparations and it was during this period that the French corvette, 'Astrolabe" under the 'command of Captain Dumont D'Urville, visited that place. The French commander was quick to observe that they were on a warlike expedition, and questioned Raneitnke regarding hie intentions. D'Urville says, "Having questioned Rangi more particularly. after some shifting he avowed that he was conducting the advanoe ruard of n military expedition directed this year by the people of the Pay of Islands against those of Waikato, whose ruin they hod sworn. He awaited from day to day the arrival of the other chiefs to advance towards the south.' The "Astrolabe." nailed south on February 23. 1827, and by February 26 had reached the shores of Hauraki and was cruising among the islands to the east of L'aitemate. The French vessel was visited by Te Rangihun and Wnero (brother of Te Knape) of Ngati-Paoa and D'Urville records a amusing incident vhioh took place. "lay guest never ceased telling me with emphasis that he had killed and eaten Ponare, shoring me with pride

992/'ll. TS 4AHAnA DU RATS IICATI-lCATTF AT ROTORTTA. Aug. 6, 1876. Towards the latter end. of the year 1835 the rrati-Whakaue tribe of Rotorue received some trade goods from a Enropean named Tapsal and these were divided among the people. The division did not suit a man named Rake and in order to punish his tribe for the supposed slight, this man murdered flange, a cousin of the Intel ohief Te raharon. Runge, in spite of being a Waikato man, had been living in the lake country for some time and at the time of his death was living in a village near the north side of Lake Rotorua. During December of 1155 Iluka and acme attendants arrived at the village in canoes, and Itunga, being on good terms with his visitor, came forward to meet him and was in the not of pressing, noses when he was struck down with a tomahawk. On Christmas Day the body of :lunge was out up, cooked and eaten. For the dates concerned in this warfare with Ngati-Whokaue we are fortunate in having the records of the Itissianaries who had established themselves among the Te Arawa people. Word of the killing of :lunge yips not long in reaching Te Waheroa and that c`lief wasted no time in serding messengers to other tribes of Waikato and Ngati-Yaniapoto, with the result that within ten weeks, a war party of 1,000 warrio-e consisting of Ngati-Hans, Te Weharoa's own tribe, 'Zalkato ant Neati-Maniapoto under their chiefs Te Kanawa and rokorau and others. ,.?04140gEt party now marched to 7/turn/len and on the 24th raroh, 1876, crossed the harbour and the next day captured fourteen of the Te Arawa who 1, on a visit to Nuke,

Meanwhile, Nrati-Whakaue, maddened at these losses, mustered a war party of 1,600 men at Ohinemuta, and set out for Makotu with the set purpose of attacking Ngal-Te-Rangi, the people of Tauranga and allies of Te Waharoa. Several days went by before any direct move was made. The Pa of Nrati-Whaknue wan situated on a hill near the lake and was surrounded by boiling springs, a dangeroue spot for anyone unfamiliar with the loeality, and Te Waharoa wisely forbade a direct assault. At length, on the 6th August, a picked party, under a young chief of Wreti- aua named. Fetini Taiporutu, made a feigned attack on the pa. This plan ens so skilfully carried out that all Wrati-Whakaue, believing that their foes were defeated, rushed out of their pa in hot pursuit. They were driven back right to the gate of their pa whioh would have fallen had not their chief, Korokni, in an endeavour to rally hie fleeing forces, shouted, "Let ne die on my own lend!" 'rhese breve words stopped the panic but ligati-Hasa and Waiknto were satisfied and returned to their camp, taming with then sixty bodies whioh were crooked and eaten. The invaders stayed in the vicinity for nearly week and then To Waharoa broke camp lied returned to his own country laden with the heads of his enemies. On the 24th August the Vlsolonaries visited the late camp of Te ';'aheron. 'r.
