The typescript , in two volumes , ( In Maori and English ) has been forwarded to you by parcel post , and I should be pleased if you would place it before your editorial Committee for a decision as to whether the Society would publish th work ,uite frankly , the thought constant. ly in m, mind as I wrote it was that , by presenting it in dramatised form , it would be considered as too great a departure from the acceptat form of works sponsored by the Society. My reasoning on this point is set out at the foot of page iii and continued on page iv of the Preface With regard to the title , my preference was for "He Tuhi Varei-kura" ( A Treasury of Sacred Writing) I called it Tr, , with the other as a secondary title , because the word tapu is short and easy to pronounce and remember ; it has also become incorporated into the Inglish language - with its Pacific islands variation Taboo. Sir Peter's ,.ork on the Pacific Islands Commission has apparently taken up most of his time since writing this letter , and he has not found Lime to write again or to reply to mine of the 6/1/1947 : Tho conclusion you have come to that the 10 concept originated in New Zealand comes rather as a shock to me I know that you will have weighed up all the evidence from extant published materiel on the sub- ject r what it is xorth , I should like to put forward an idea that has been in my mind for sometime From my reading of books on our people I have come to the conclusion that migrant sections of the race are more conservative in such matters as the preservation of the purity of language , traditions religious beliefs , and their customs generally In language , for instance , according to my theory , an immobile people tend to become sophisticated and sloven- ly in their treatment of it And , in their speech , sounds which require some expenditure of force in the utterance are replaced with sounds of greater ease in speaking , or these difficult sounds are slurred and in some cases discarded altogether Applying this theory and taking into account the migrations of our people as given in your "Vikings of the Sunrise' , the greatest deterioration must have taken place in the Hub and the islands adjacent thereto Following this up , I say that the Tainui , Arawa , Takitumu , Matatua and Tokomaru peoples migrated from the Hub of Polynesia several generations before coming to Aotearoa'(See page v of my preface ) "and thereby pres.,rved the language , esoteric175-7?and traditions in a form more closely resembling their original aspect The ,otea folk , on the other hand , can be directly identified - both by their speech and traditions - with Tahiti

The first part of the glish version is forwarded herewith If you will kindly read it and give me your opinion as to its literary value and the prospects of having it published , I shall be much obliged When writing the preface to it I at one time thought of making some reference to a challenging statement by our kaumatua , Te Peehi , with regard to the absence of any worthwhile contribution by the West Coast and Northern tribes to the lore of the Whore Wananga I wanted to say that this statement by the kaumatua acted as a spur to me in the task of assembling and collating the material for the writing of this work. In cemposing,this work in dramatic form I have tried to recreate the atmosphere which surrounded the oldtims Maori priesthood ; and in so doing I have also endeavoured to preserve the depth and beauty of his sacred lore I have not as yet made any annotation of the book This will be quite an undertaking The present day reader dislikes frequent recourse to notes and for the time being explanatory footnotes have almost entirely beep-dispensed with in the general body of my writing If appropriate references were made to other works and full explanatory notes were compiled I think it will make a volume in itself The Table of Contents attached to the papers now forte. warded will give you an idea of the scope of my work The chapter entitled, "The Tainui Creation Chart" will be a unique feature and I think students of the Pollleluia Race will V find it of absorbing interest.
