Description
xdg-utils appears to work on various window/desktop managers (gnome, kde, lxde?) of various linux distributions (ubuntu, centos, fedora?).
xdg-utils includes:
(1) xdg-open which will use the default app to launch a file of a particular file extension. This means it is useful as the default Linxu command for GLI's file assocations. Currently, the CentOS here doesn't recognise the xdg-open command, because it's not installed.
(2) xdg-utils will allow Greenstone to install menu items/icons on desktops on various Linux desktop managers.

Xdg-utils consists of the following installation related tools:
*xdg-desktop-menu, install desktop menu items
- xdg-desktop-icon, install icons to the desktop
The idea is to include xdg-utils with Greenstone and run its operation to create menu/desktop icons as an ant target during installation of GS core.
