48Subject: [greenstone-devel] Archives - Index/assoc: why both?
49Message-ID: <!&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAMqkfLKn3i1CvY3Zg+pc6XzigAAAEAAAAEtb1H+TZexMs7JT7EsI2z8BAAAAAA==@orsna.gov.ar>
50
51Hi list,
52
53it is well known that every document in import folder generates a folder in
54archives after the import process. Then, building process copies all source
55files to index/assoc, so we have duplicated disk space needed to host all
56files.
57
58I have a collection with almost 700.000 tiff files, all imported with
59Pagedimgplug. This collection is not a static one, every couple of days we
60add new documents, so we have two options:
61
621- Use Lucene and incremental building: this sounds interesting but we have
63many problems with parsing doc.xml files, accents and many other things.
64
652- Use MGPP: it works great, we have all the features we need but
66incremental indexing is not possible. So every few days we have to reindex
67all again, and again... This approach consumes a reasonable time to generate
68indexes, but it spends a lot of time copying 700.000 files from archives to
69building/assoc, and deleting the old index folder with the other 700.000
70files.
71
72The questions are:
73
74a- Is it possible to link to source files directly from archives folder?.
75This will result in saving a lot of time because copying files form archives
76to assoc is no more necessary. I remember that someone asked for something
77like this, but I canŽt find the mail in the email archives collection. I
78think that builcol.pl must be modified to work this way. Is there anybody
79out there that can do it?.
80
81b- Is it possible to add an option to future releases where the user can
82choose weather buildcol with source docs in place (in archives folders) or
83not?.
84
85TIA.

99hello every one i am amin
100and i got some questions about collection customization in GS3
101what i want to do hear is to build a collection whit some pdf file whit Marc
102metadata description but i do not want to show the compleate pdfs on the
103greenstone
104online interface but the only marc metadata descryption should be shown in
105the there whit a linke to the pdf file for download , for now the only
106search options would be the mark metadata file field to be searched
107ok now
108
1091 . is there any way for me to do this whit the standard greenstone plugins
110and collections ?
1112 . or should i make my own Collections if so i would like to now where to
112start at ?
113
114so far i have read the Greenstone3 manual and got farmiliar whit the
115architecture consepts and service developments
116but i couldent find some good resources for plugin developements if there is
117any out there i would appreciate it if some one woulde let me now about it.

126Subject: [greenstone-devel] Greenstone 2.81 released!
127Message-ID: <[email protected]>
128
129Hi everyone,
130
131We are pleased to announce that the Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS/X and
132Source distributions of Greenstone v2.81
133are now available for download from our sourceforge page:
134http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone or from
135http://www.greenstone.org/download
136
137Release notes are copied below.
138
139This has been a long time coming, thank you for your patience.
140
141As always, please report any problems or bugs to the mailing list.
142
143Regards,
144Katherine and the rest of the Greenstone team.
145
146------------------------------
147Greenstone 2.81 release notes
148------------------------------
149
150Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
151
152Installer:
153--------------
154
155The Greenstone installer downloads are now created using only open source
156software, including Ant Installer (http://antinstaller.sourceforge.net/),
157Apache Ant (http://ant.apache.org/), our own search4j (based on launch4j
158http://launch4j.sourceforge.net/), and our own Greenstone release kits.
159
160We felt it was essential to move away from our existing, closed-source
161installer suite as it was not in the spirit of Greenstone to rely on
162proprietary software, and it invited the unnecessary cost of keeping the
163suite
164up-to-date.
165
166Using only open source software has also given us the freedom to
167customise the
168user experience of the installers. Where a feature was lacking in one of
169the
170open source packages, we have enjoyed the ability to "open the hood" and
171implement it.
172
173With the development of the Greenstone release kits we are now able to
174generate
175 releases of Greenstone automatically and unattended. This process
176takes just
17720 minutes, and it has helped us a lot in the development and testing of
178new
179features of Greenstone. We have been able to set up a feedback loop,
180where code
181 committed one day is included in an automatic nightly snapshot release
182made
183available for download on our website the next day. Our users have also
184benefited from being able to obtain up-to-date snapshot releases of
185Greenstone
186in between our official releases.
187
188These daily snapshots are available through:
189
190 http://www.greenstone.org/snapshots
191
192On Windows, the version number is included in the Start Menu which means
193that
194multiple installations of Greenstone will have their own entries in the
195Start
196Menu. The installer no longer writes to the registry, so installation no
197longer requires administrator privileges.
198
199ImageMagick is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for all
200platforms (previously it was only provided on a CD-ROM release) and
201includes
202JPEG2000 support. The installer offers the option to install this or not.
203You can skip installing it if you already have ImageMagick previously
204installed.
205
206Ghostscript is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for
207Windows
208and Mac. The installer offers the option to install this or not. You can
209skip installing it if you already have Ghostscript previously installed.
210
211Importing and Plugin Changes:
212------------------------------
213
214Plugin Restructuring: The plugins have been restructured. This has been
215done
216mostly for coding efficiency. The most noticeable change is that plugins
217have
218been renamed. xxxPlug now becomes xxxPlugin, and some have also had
219their names
220 modified or expanded to be clearer. For example, DBPlug is now
221DatabasePlugin,
222 PPTPlug is PowerPointPlugin. The complete list of new plugins can be
223seen at
224http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Plugins. Old collections should
225still build okay in GLI, which will map the old plugin names to the new
226ones.
227Command line building should also work, but the configuration file won't be
228altered to use the new names.
229
230A lot of work has been done trying to get Greenstone to work properly with
231non-ascii filenames. Two versions of the filename are stored, [Source] for
232displaying the filename, and [SourceFile] for linking to the file from a
233web page.
234
235The -smart_block option (most commonly seen with HTMLPlugin) has been
236deprecated
237. Instead we have a first pass through the documents to find out which ones
238should be blocked.
239
240MARCPlugin and MARCXMLPlugin can now map metadata to Qualified Dublin
241Core as
242well as Dublin Core.
243
244MARCXMLPlugin now assigns metadata from metadata.xml files.
245
246EMAILPlugin now saves binary attachments as binary files on Windows
247
248ImagePlugin and PagedImagePlugin now offer the -cache_generated_images
249option
250to prevent thumbnails and screenview images being recreated each import.
251
252OAIPlugin saves the metadata as Dublin Core rather than moving it all to
253the ex
254 metadata set. This means that it won't show up in the GLI unless the
255files are
256 exploded. Exploding is now available for OAI records.
257
258ProCitePlugin no longer uses the pc namespace. Metadata is stored using the
259field names set in the workform definition, rather than using Field1Name
260and
261Field1Value etc..
262
263-reversesort option to import.pl to be used with -sortmeta option to
264sort in
265reverse order.
266
267Tidied up OID generation. OIDtype and OIDmetadata options are now available
268for each plugin as well as globally from import.pl. Hashing usually
269occurs on
270the original file, but some plugins specify that hashing should be done
271on the
272Greenstone XML document.
273
274Building and Indexing Changes:
275-------------------------------
276
277Improvements to Lucene incremental building. Lucene document identifiers
278now
279match Greenstone identifiers, rather than 1, 2, 3. Rebuilding with no new
280documents shouldn't break the index.
281
282MGPP and Lucene building tidied up. 'allfields' now means combined
283searching
284over all specified indexes (not all document metadata) for both mgpp and
285lucene.
286 'metadata' will index all metadata, but no longer reindexes metadata
287that has
288already been specified. MGPP indexing over combined fields now works
289properly.
290
291New collection configuration file option: infodbtype. Values include
292gdbm (the
293default), gdbm-txtgz, sqlite, mssql. This specifies what database system
294to use
295for the collection metadata database. Currently this needs to be added to
296collect.cfg by hand, as it is not available in GLI yet.
297
298gdbm: the default, and is what has always been used previously. This is
299platform dependent. It transfers between Windows and Linux, but not
300to/from a
301Mac.
302
303gdbm-txtgz: A gzipped text version of the database. At runtime, the
304first time
305this collection is accessed, it will be unpacked and converted to the
306appropriate GDBM database using txt2db. This is a good choice if you are
307creating a collection to be used on another operating system, especially if
308one or more of those operating systems is a Mac.
309
310sqlite: Platform independent database using SQLite. The new dynamic
311classifiers
312 (created at runtime) can be used with this database. See
313http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/More_about_classifiers#How_do_I_use_dynamic_classifiers.3F
314
315for more information. Thanks to DL Consulting
316
317mssql: Windows specific database using MS SQL Server. See
318http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Using_MSSQL_for_Collection_Database
319
320for information about how to set this up. Thanks to DL Consulting
321
322Depositor:
323------------
324
325Collection editing using the Depositor is now enabled by default for the
326admin
327user.
328
329The metadata fields offered for each document can now easily be customised
330from the GLI.
331
332By default, the depositor will import and build each document into the
333collection when it is added. It can now be easily set up to just "deposit"
334the item without rebuilding.
335
336See http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_use_the_depositor for
337more information.
338
339GLI
340-------
341
342A new right-click file option for binary files that go through a conversion
343process to be imported, such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint files. "Replace
344source
345document with HTML" will convert the original file to HTML and replace
346it in
347the collection. This means that the converted HTML (which may be
348unattractive)
349can now be modified in the collection. This is available for Remote GLI too.
350
351A new right-click file option on the collection tree background to
352refresh the
353file view. This is useful if you have manually added files to the
354collection
355outside of GLI.
356
357MetadataXMLPlugin has been moved 'below the line' in the Plugins panel so
358cannot be removed in GLI. If you are using GLI to add metadata, then you
359need
360this plugin.
361
362The Export As option now only exports one collection at a time. Collections
363can be exported as GreenstoneMETS, FedoraMETS, MARCXML and DSpace archive.
364
365'NavigationBar pulldown' added to the list of format options - this
366makes the
367navigation 'bar' a drop down list instead of a bar across the page.
368
369Lots of work done on making the Download panel work better, including
370getting
371download processes to terminate when they are cancelled or when GLI is
372closed
373while they are still running.
374
375New panel under the Format tab, "Depositor Metadata" which allows
376customisation of which metadata fields should be offered in the
377depositor for
378that collection.
379
380CJK segmentation option has been added to GLI. This doesn't do proper word
381segmentation, but adds a space in between each CJK character. The character
382ranges have been expanded to work with Japanese and Korean. It is
383applied to
384metadata as well as document text.
385
386New panel under the Create tab allowing the scheduling of automatic
387collection
388rebuilding.
389
390Greenstone Runtime:
391----------------------
392
393Large code restructuring. Code is split between common-src, build-src and
394runtime-src. Makes it easer to use code in other projets, such as
395Greenstone 3
396and running Greenstone on an iPhone/iPod Touch.
397
398External links now default to going straight to the web page, rather than
399showing a warning page first.
400
401Improvements to the oaiserver, thanks to DL Consulting. Resumption token
402support has been added, and it now validates against online validation
403tools.
404
405Greenstone now compiles for Linux on 64-bit platforms. All programs are
406compiled natively for 64-bit, except for those that rely on mg/mgpp, which
407still need to be 32-bit compiled. As part of the configure/make
408process, the
409correct flags are automatically set, so from the developers point of
410view you
411compile up Greenstone on a 64-bit machine the exact same way you do for any
412other Unix-based system.
413
414FLI - Fedora Librarian Interface
415---------------------------------
416
417The Fedora Librarian Interface (FLI) is very much like GLI in that it
418allows
419you to gather together your documents. It then uses Greenstone's ability to
420convert documents into the FedoraMETS format so that these can be ingested
421(put into) a Fedora repository. The process of building a collection
422using FLI
423exports documents into a repository maintained by a Fedora server rather
424than
425one maintained by Greenstone. In order to use FLI, you will need to have
426Fedora installed. More information on how to install Fedora and set it up
427to work with FLI, and how to run FLI itself, can be found in the documents:
428

552Hi Arthur and Stephen
553
554Michael from dlconsulting (dlconsulting.com) has done some work on this, and
555our OAI server now validates. The 2.81 release contains the new server if
556you'd like to try it. You can get it from www.greenstone.org/download

567Greenstone does have an OAI server as well as an OAI harvester. However, I
568just tried my server with the OAI repository Explorer at
569http://re.cs.uct.ac.za/ and it failed.
570
571
572
573I did also run it through the Data Provider Validation and Registration at
574http://www.openarchives.org/Register/ValidateSite and it failed 2 tests,
575improper response to an invalid request and a problem with some characters
576in the data (this is my problem). The first problem may be a limit in GS'
577oaiserver.

711
712The latest version of Greenstone 3 needs lots of changes to catch up and
713work well again, because our focus in the recent weeks was all on
714Greenstone 2 for its release.
715
716Therefore, for now, use the version of Greenstone 3 you have. In a
717little while, GS3 will be sufficiently updated for you to work with the
718latest from SVN. The SVN url (from TRAC) for GS3 is
719svn co http://svn.greenstone.org/greenstone3/trunk greenstone3
720
7212. About your language translation questions, I've forwarded them to the
722person who knows a lot about the language interface for GS and GLI.
723Though the developer in question is out of the country at the moment, I
724am hopeful they may respond when they find the time.
725
726
7273. > how ever the error had changed since whit out the javahome varible
728 > tests previosly it was like bellow
729Probably this is because the error output code has changed.
730
731The old error message you encountered said:
732 > Content-type:text/plain ERROR: Java failed -- do you have the Java
733 > run-time installed? JAVA_HOME environment variable not set. Might not
734 > be able to find Java unless in PATH
735Therefore, will you try again after adding Java's bin library to your path.
736
737For instance my PATH starts with:
738/opt/jdk1.5.0_10/bin:/opt/jdk1.5.0_10/bin/javac:/path/to/apache-ant-1.6.5:
739/path/to/fedora3/server/bin:/path/to/fedora3/client/bin:/opt/jdk1.5.0_10/jre:<more>
740
741As you see in the above, I have the PATH to the JRE at the end. Try that
742first. Otherwise (and I hope this is not necessary), you can try to add
743your JDK's bin folder and javac to the PATH, similar to how my PATH
744contains them both.
745
746Tell me how you get on,

973Hi everyone,
974
975As mentioned, one of the new features in Greenstone v2.81 is the ability
976to schedule the automatic rebuilding of a greenstone collection using the
977GLI.
978
979Scheduling will require some configuration in order for it to work. The
980following link has more information on how to do this for each platform:

1078> installed.
1079>
1080> Ghostscript is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for
1081> Windows
1082> and Mac. The installer offers the option to install this or not. You can
1083> skip installing it if you already have Ghostscript previously installed.
1084>
1085> Importing and Plugin Changes:
1086> ------------------------------
1087>
1088> Plugin Restructuring: The plugins have been restructured. This has been
1089> done
1090> mostly for coding efficiency. The most noticeable change is that plugins
1091> have
1092> been renamed. xxxPlug now becomes xxxPlugin, and some have also had
1093> their names
1094> modified or expanded to be clearer. For example, DBPlug is now
1095> DatabasePlugin,
1096> PPTPlug is PowerPointPlugin. The complete list of new plugins can be
1097> seen at
1098> http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Plugins. Old collections should
1099> still build okay in GLI, which will map the old plugin names to the new
1100> ones.
1101> Command line building should also work, but the configuration file won't
1102> be
1103> altered to use the new names.
1104>
1105> A lot of work has been done trying to get Greenstone to work properly with
1106> non-ascii filenames. Two versions of the filename are stored, [Source] for
1107> displaying the filename, and [SourceFile] for linking to the file from a
1108> web page.
1109>
1110> The -smart_block option (most commonly seen with HTMLPlugin) has been
1111> deprecated
1112> . Instead we have a first pass through the documents to find out which
1113> ones
1114> should be blocked.
1115>
1116> MARCPlugin and MARCXMLPlugin can now map metadata to Qualified Dublin
1117> Core as
1118> well as Dublin Core.
1119>
1120> MARCXMLPlugin now assigns metadata from metadata.xml files.
1121>
1122> EMAILPlugin now saves binary attachments as binary files on Windows
1123>
1124> ImagePlugin and PagedImagePlugin now offer the -cache_generated_images
1125> option
1126> to prevent thumbnails and screenview images being recreated each import.
1127>
1128> OAIPlugin saves the metadata as Dublin Core rather than moving it all to
1129> the ex
1130> metadata set. This means that it won't show up in the GLI unless the
1131> files are
1132> exploded. Exploding is now available for OAI records.
1133>
1134> ProCitePlugin no longer uses the pc namespace. Metadata is stored using
1135> the
1136> field names set in the workform definition, rather than using Field1Name
1137> and
1138> Field1Value etc..
1139>
1140> -reversesort option to import.pl to be used with -sortmeta option to
1141> sort in
1142> reverse order.
1143>
1144> Tidied up OID generation. OIDtype and OIDmetadata options are now
1145> available
1146> for each plugin as well as globally from import.pl. Hashing usually
1147> occurs on
1148> the original file, but some plugins specify that hashing should be done
1149> on the
1150> Greenstone XML document.
1151>
1152> Building and Indexing Changes:
1153> -------------------------------
1154>
1155> Improvements to Lucene incremental building. Lucene document identifiers
1156> now
1157> match Greenstone identifiers, rather than 1, 2, 3. Rebuilding with no new
1158> documents shouldn't break the index.
1159>
1160> MGPP and Lucene building tidied up. 'allfields' now means combined
1161> searching
1162> over all specified indexes (not all document metadata) for both mgpp and
1163> lucene.
1164> 'metadata' will index all metadata, but no longer reindexes metadata
1165> that has
1166> already been specified. MGPP indexing over combined fields now works
1167> properly.
1168>
1169> New collection configuration file option: infodbtype. Values include
1170> gdbm (the
1171> default), gdbm-txtgz, sqlite, mssql. This specifies what database system
1172> to use
1173> for the collection metadata database. Currently this needs to be added to
1174> collect.cfg by hand, as it is not available in GLI yet.
1175>
1176> gdbm: the default, and is what has always been used previously. This is
1177> platform dependent. It transfers between Windows and Linux, but not
1178> to/from a
1179> Mac.
1180>
1181> gdbm-txtgz: A gzipped text version of the database. At runtime, the
1182> first time
1183> this collection is accessed, it will be unpacked and converted to the
1184> appropriate GDBM database using txt2db. This is a good choice if you are
1185> creating a collection to be used on another operating system, especially
1186> if
1187> one or more of those operating systems is a Mac.
1188>
1189> sqlite: Platform independent database using SQLite. The new dynamic
1190> classifiers
1191> (created at runtime) can be used with this database. See
1192> http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/More_about_classifiers#How_do_I_use_dynamic_classifiers.3F

1194> for more information. Thanks to DL Consulting
1195>
1196> mssql: Windows specific database using MS SQL Server. See
1197> http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Using_MSSQL_for_Collection_Database
1198>
1199> for information about how to set this up. Thanks to DL Consulting
1200>
1201> Depositor:
1202> ------------
1203>
1204> Collection editing using the Depositor is now enabled by default for the
1205> admin
1206> user.
1207>
1208> The metadata fields offered for each document can now easily be customised
1209> from the GLI.
1210>
1211> By default, the depositor will import and build each document into the
1212> collection when it is added. It can now be easily set up to just "deposit"
1213> the item without rebuilding.
1214>
1215> See http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_use_the_depositor for
1216> more information.
1217>
1218> GLI
1219> -------
1220>
1221> A new right-click file option for binary files that go through a
1222> conversion
1223> process to be imported, such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint files. "Replace
1224> source
1225> document with HTML" will convert the original file to HTML and replace
1226> it in
1227> the collection. This means that the converted HTML (which may be
1228> unattractive)
1229> can now be modified in the collection. This is available for Remote GLI
1230> too.
1231>
1232> A new right-click file option on the collection tree background to
1233> refresh the
1234> file view. This is useful if you have manually added files to the
1235> collection
1236> outside of GLI.
1237>
1238> MetadataXMLPlugin has been moved 'below the line' in the Plugins panel so
1239> cannot be removed in GLI. If you are using GLI to add metadata, then you
1240> need
1241> this plugin.
1242>
1243> The Export As option now only exports one collection at a time.
1244> Collections
1245> can be exported as GreenstoneMETS, FedoraMETS, MARCXML and DSpace archive.
1246>
1247> 'NavigationBar pulldown' added to the list of format options - this
1248> makes the
1249> navigation 'bar' a drop down list instead of a bar across the page.
1250>
1251> Lots of work done on making the Download panel work better, including
1252> getting
1253> download processes to terminate when they are cancelled or when GLI is
1254> closed
1255> while they are still running.
1256>
1257> New panel under the Format tab, "Depositor Metadata" which allows
1258> customisation of which metadata fields should be offered in the
1259> depositor for
1260> that collection.
1261>
1262> CJK segmentation option has been added to GLI. This doesn't do proper word
1263> segmentation, but adds a space in between each CJK character. The
1264> character
1265> ranges have been expanded to work with Japanese and Korean. It is
1266> applied to
1267> metadata as well as document text.
1268>
1269> New panel under the Create tab allowing the scheduling of automatic
1270> collection
1271> rebuilding.
1272>
1273> Greenstone Runtime:
1274> ----------------------
1275>
1276> Large code restructuring. Code is split between common-src, build-src and
1277> runtime-src. Makes it easer to use code in other projets, such as
1278> Greenstone 3
1279> and running Greenstone on an iPhone/iPod Touch.
1280>
1281> External links now default to going straight to the web page, rather than
1282> showing a warning page first.
1283>
1284> Improvements to the oaiserver, thanks to DL Consulting. Resumption token
1285> support has been added, and it now validates against online validation
1286> tools.
1287>
1288> Greenstone now compiles for Linux on 64-bit platforms. All programs are
1289> compiled natively for 64-bit, except for those that rely on mg/mgpp, which
1290> still need to be 32-bit compiled. As part of the configure/make
1291> process, the
1292> correct flags are automatically set, so from the developers point of
1293> view you
1294> compile up Greenstone on a 64-bit machine the exact same way you do for
1295> any
1296> other Unix-based system.
1297>
1298> FLI - Fedora Librarian Interface
1299> ---------------------------------
1300>
1301> The Fedora Librarian Interface (FLI) is very much like GLI in that it
1302> allows
1303> you to gather together your documents. It then uses Greenstone's ability
1304> to
1305> convert documents into the FedoraMETS format so that these can be ingested
1306> (put into) a Fedora repository. The process of building a collection
1307> using FLI
1308> exports documents into a repository maintained by a Fedora server rather
1309> than
1310> one maintained by Greenstone. In order to use FLI, you will need to have
1311> Fedora installed. More information on how to install Fedora and set it up
1312> to work with FLI, and how to run FLI itself, can be found in the

1403The ticket would start out as unassigned. Then anyone who wanted to fix
1404it can accept it by entering their username. If we think it is an urgent
1405problem we will fix it ourselves as soon as possible.
1406> if i can do some thing about one where can i sobmit my code ?(is it

1408Yes that will do nicely.
1409> and if so ,lets say i made some changes to some source code in the app
1410> , which files should upload ?
1411Just the source files you have modified.
1412> and who manages all the updates to be made or not ?
1413Someone in the Greenstone team will look at the changes and run some
1414tests and then decide whether to commit them to the repository. Please
1415send us an email to alert us when you have submitted changes, as we
1416might miss it otherwise.

1532Message-ID: <[email protected]>
1533
1534hi , it me again :D
1535and i need some help an opinions .
1536i am using GS3 .
1537what i want to do is to build a pdf collection
1538may be better to call it file collection
1539i want to enter some pdf files with their metadata and a abstract text in
1540the collection
1541the collection soulde be sherchable from the metadata types and the abstract
1542text.
1543and the content of an document in the web site soulde be a table showing
1544some metadata and the abstract and a download link to
1545the pdf file* i know that this in posible with editing the greenstone
1546fromats in the GLI or manualy.*
1547and i do not want to use pdf plugin , becuse my pdfs are not standard ones
1548and i have problems when using pdf plug.
1549*first what kindes of plugins shoulde i use ? is the unknownPlug for this
1550reason ?*
1551i know how to edite the formats in the GLI (browse, search, dispaly ...) but i
1552dont now the exact syntax for
1553greenstone fromats and i couldent finde any document on them so :
1554*is their a document for greenstone3 format syntax for out their?*
1555*how shoulde i enter the abstract text? shoulde it be in a metadata field or
1556is their another option for longer abstracts ?*
1557and am going to enter the metadata in persian language
1558their wouldent be any steming an accent an case options support for persian
1559language
1560*shoulde i use Lucene or Mg and Mgpp are better ?*

1621Hi Stephen
1622
1623Sorry, I misunderstood what you were after. I guess what you want is the
1624ability to export a collection as OAI (currently we provide MARC, METS,
1625DSpace formats).
1626I'm not sure what kind of file OAIster wants
1627Is the file you are after like the result of an OAI request? Can you set up
1628your Greenstone with an oai server, send a request to it, and then save the
1629XML result as a file?
1630
1631If you wanted to try this, you can use our OAI server to test the format
1632before setting up your own one.
1633http://www.nzdl.org/cgi-bin/gsdl-svn/oaiserver
1634
1635If this is not suitable, then I guess the answer is no. If this is something
1636that many people might want to do, then we could look at maybe implementing
1637it in the future.
1638
1639I hope this helps,

1847Message-ID: <[email protected]>
1848
1849Skip the previous email I just sent. Below is the same, but with some
1850important corrections.
1851
1852Hello Andrew,
1853
1854I tried compiling up a fresh checkout of Greenstone 3 from SVN on the
1855Windows machine here and did not encounter this problem. However, this may
1856be because my settings for Java are set up in such a manner that it worked
1857out.
1858
1859- Do you have a JDK installed on your machine?
1860- What is your JAVA_HOME set to?
1861- Do you have the following files in your JAVA_HOME\bin folder:
1862javac
1863javah
1864java
1865javadoc
1866jar
1867
1868I do not know to what extent you are familiar with programming, but seeing
1869as how you are compiling up GS3 from SVN, I thought I could explain the
1870following to you so that you can try out a few things to narrow down where
1871the problem might be.
1872
1873Concerning this bit that you referred to:
1874 >> compile-packages:
1875 >> [echo] compile javagdbm
1876 >> [echo] Windows: compile javagdbm (java only)
1877 >> [exec] Compiling...
1878 >> [exec] The system cannot find the path specified.
1879 >> [exec] The system cannot find the path specified.
1880 >> [exec] The system cannot find the path specified.
1881 >> [echo] Install the javagdbm jar file
1882
1883These print statements happen in your Greenstone3/build.xml file (around
1884line 1200).
1885
1886At the stage this happens, the build.xml is calling the makefile
1887"winMake.bat" located in your Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm folder and
1888passing the arguments "compile" and "javaonly".
1889
1890During execution of this makefile, some directory path is referred to that
1891it cannot find, causing the compilation to fail at this stage which then
1892causes the build to fail when the javagdbm jar file has not been produced.
1893
18941. In a DOS prompt, can you go to the directory
1895Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/ and then from there type:
1896winMake.bat compile javaonly
1897Does it give some error statements here?
1898
18992. If so, can you go one directory further down into a folder called java
1900(so that now you are in Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java) and type:
1901winMake.bat compile
1902Are there any error statements appearing here now?
1903
1904If there was no error output in doing either 1. or 2. above, neither 3 nor
19054 below are necessary:
19063. If you open up the file Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/winMake.bat
1907in Wordpad (Notepad doesn't preserve the lines very well), you will see
1908that the arguments "compile" and "javaonly" to winMake.bat cause it to
1909call another winMake.bat makefile located
1910at Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java, passing it the "compile"
1911argument.
1912
1913The first question is, do you have a folder called java situated inside your
1914Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/? And does
1915Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java contain a file called winMake.bat?
1916
19174. If so:
1918When opening up the Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java/winMake.bat
1919file in
1920WordPad, you may perhaps notice that it refers to lots of directory paths.
1921It stores many of these paths in variables marked by ALL_UPPERCASE.
1922Sometimes it may happen that in reality these paths contain spaces like
1923"Program Files". This could cause problems if spaces are indeed involved,
1924unless such paths are embedded in quotes.
1925
1926Can you replace the following section in your
1927Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java/winMake.bat file with the bit that
1928follows it:
1929 >>>>REPLACE FOLLOWING:
1930:compile
1931 if not exist %JAVACLASSDIR% mkdir %JAVACLASSDIR%
1932 echo Compiling...
1933 %JAVAC% -d %JAVACLASSDIR% %JAVACOPTIONS%
1934au\com\pharos\gdbm\*.java au\com\pharos\io\*.java
1935au\com\pharos\meta\*.java au\com\pharos\packing\*.java
1936au\com\pharos\test\*.java au\com\pharos\util\*.java
1937 %JAVAH% -classpath %JAVACLASSDIR% -o %JAVAGDBMHOME%\jni\GdbmFile.h
1938au.com.pharos.gdbm.GdbmFile
1939 %JAR% cf %JAVAGDBMHOME%\javagdbm.jar -C %JAVACLASSDIR% au
1940 goto done
1941<<<<
1942
1943 >>>>REPLACE WITH:
1944:compile
1945 if not exist "%JAVACLASSDIR%" mkdir "%JAVACLASSDIR%"
1946 echo Compiling...
1947 "%JAVAC%" -d "%JAVACLASSDIR%" "%JAVACOPTIONS%"
1948au\com\pharos\gdbm\*.java au\com\pharos\io\*.java
1949au\com\pharos\meta\*.java au\com\pharos\packing\*.java
1950au\com\pharos\test\*.java au\com\pharos\util\*.java
1951 "%JAVAH%" -classpath "%JAVACLASSDIR%" -o
1952"%JAVAGDBMHOME%\jni\GdbmFile.h" au.com.pharos.gdbm.GdbmFile
1953 "%JAR%" cf "%JAVAGDBMHOME%\javagdbm.jar" -C "%JAVACLASSDIR%" au
1954 goto done
1955<<<<
1956
1957Now, back in your DOS prompt, from within the
1958Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/ directory, type:
1959winMake.bat compile javaonly
1960
1961Do you still see the same problems?
1962
19635. If the above changes did not fix the errors, we can print out the
1964values of these paths to make sure they are all set to something that
1965makes sense.
1966
1967After the line
1968set JAR="%JAVA_HOME%\bin\jar"
1969in your Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java/winMake.bat file,
1970
1971can you paste the following bits between >>>> <<<<:
1972 >>>>
1973echo javagdbmhome: "%JAVAGDBMHOME%"
1974echo javaclassdir: "%JAVACLASSDIR%"
1975echo.
1976echo javac: "%JAVAC%"
1977echo javah: "%JAVAH%"
1978echo java: "%JAVA%"
1979echo javadoc: "%JAVADOC%"
1980echo jar: "%JAR%"
1981<<<<
1982
1983Go back to your DOS prompt and from within
1984Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java/ type:
1985winMake.bat compile
1986
1987Hopefully it should now print out all the values of the paths above so
1988that you can see whether any of them is conspicuous. For instance:
1989- Do all the printed paths have a value or is any left as ""?
1990- And when you look for these folders in Windows Explorer, are you able to
1991find all the folder paths which were just printed out to the DOS prompt?
1992
1993Tell us how you get on,
1994Anupama
