17 | Subject: [greenstone-devel] cache_generated_images problem (and solution)
---|
18 | Message-ID: <[email protected]>
---|
19 |
---|
20 | Dear Greenstone team,
---|
21 |
---|
22 | Since I am currently maintaining a few collections which consist mainly of
---|
23 | scanned images, I welcome cache_generated_images option in Greenstone 2.81.
---|
24 | However, when I tried to build a collection with
---|
25 | cache_generated_images=true on a
---|
26 | WinXP machine I got the following error messages: Use of uninitialized
---|
27 | value in substitution (s///) at C:\Program
---|
28 | Files\Greenstone/perllib/plugins/BaseMediaConverter.pm line 84. and ****
---|
29 | Error is: fileparse(): need a valid pathname at C:\Program
---|
30 | Files\Greenstone/perllib/plugins/BaseMediaConverter.pm line 88.
---|
31 | I traced the problem to BaseMediaConverter.pm and found out that the first
---|
32 | message appears because regexp in line 84 cannot match $base_dir because on
---|
33 | windows $base_dir contains slashes as directory separators, while in
---|
34 | $filename
---|
35 | directory separators are backslashes. The second error message is merely a
---|
36 | consequence of the first one, because $file is empty.
---|
37 | In order to solve this either $base_dir or $filename has to be fixed. I
---|
38 | couldn't
---|
39 | find where $self->{'base_dir'} is set. It seems that it is not in line
---|
40 | 67 of
---|
41 | BaseMediaConverter.pm since $base_dir there is an empty string. In the
---|
42 | end (and
---|
43 | because it is very late night) I decided to use a quick and dirty
---|
44 | approach and
---|
45 | insert:
---|
46 | $filename =~ s/\\/\//g;
---|
47 | before the regexp in line 84 and fix the $filename. This solved the
---|
48 | problem, and
---|
49 | I hope it will be helpful to others.
---|
50 | Maybe a better way to solve this problem would be to construct
---|
51 | $self->{'base_dir'} with backslashes or slashes depending on the operating
---|
52 | system, as utils::filename_cat does. However, as I said I cannot find
---|
53 | where it
---|
54 | is defined.
---|
55 |
---|
56 | Best regards,

161 | Hi Stephen
---|
162 |
---|
163 | I have just had a look on the web at OAIster and static repositories. Sorry,
---|
164 | I should have done this before I replied to you the first time.
---|
165 |
---|
166 | After my 5 mins of reading, this is what I understand the situation is.
---|
167 | Please correct me if I am wrong.
---|
168 |
---|
169 | OAIster harvests OAI repositories. To become a data provider, you need to
---|
170 | check your repository against a validator, and then register.
---|
171 | If you don't have a proper OAI server, then you can set up a static OAI
---|
172 | repository, which is an XML file.
---|
173 | These may be harvested by OAI repository gateways, which is what you are
---|
174 | trying to do?
---|
175 |
---|
176 | Greenstone provides a proper OAI repository server (oaiserver), and from
---|
177 | version 2.81 and later should validate against the repository validator
---|
178 | specified on the OAIster "Steps to Becoming a Data Contributor" page.
---|
179 |
---|
180 | We currently don't provide exporting a collection as an OAI static
---|
181 | repository.
---|
182 |
---|
183 | Is there a reason why you wish to keep using a static repository rather than
---|
184 | setting up the proper OAI repository?
---|
185 |
---|
186 | Regards,

433 | Subject: [greenstone-devel] Greenstone2.81rc2 released
---|
434 | Message-ID: <[email protected]>
---|
435 |
---|
436 | Hello list members,
---|
437 |
---|
438 | We are pleased to announce that the Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS/X and
---|
439 | Source distributions of Greenstone v2.81rc2
---|
440 | are now available for download from our sourceforge page:
---|
441 | http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone or from
---|
442 | http://www.greenstone.org/download
---|
443 |
---|
444 | Release notes are copied below.
---|
445 |
---|
446 | This release is further to the recent 2.81rc release (first advertised
---|
447 | as 2.81). If you installed the 2.81rc release, we recommend you upgrade
---|
448 | to 2.81rc2. This can be done in two ways:
---|
449 | A) Simply install Greenstone2.81rc2 on top of the existing
---|
450 | Greenstone2.81rc installation. This will overwrite all exising files
---|
451 | with the updated files, but will not delete anything, so your
---|
452 | collections will be preserved. Any changes to config files will be
---|
453 | overwritten with the defaults.
---|
454 | B) Rename the home folder of your existing Greenstone2.81rc installation
---|
455 | by adding '.bak' to the folder name. Then install the new
---|
456 | Greenstone2.81rc2 in its place and copy your collections and any
---|
457 | modified config files from the old 2.81rc installation to the 2.81rc2
---|
458 | installation.
---|
459 |
---|
460 | As always, please report any problems or bugs to the mailing list.
---|
461 |
---|
462 | Regards,
---|
463 | Oran and the rest of the Greenstone team.
---|
464 |
---|
465 | Release Name: 2.81rc2
---|
466 |
---|
467 | The Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS/X and Source distributions of Greenstone v2.81rc2
---|
468 | are now available for download from our sourceforge page:
---|
469 |
---|
470 | http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone
---|
471 |
---|
472 | or via
---|
473 |
---|
474 | http://www.greenstone.org/download
---|
475 |
---|
476 |
---|
477 | Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
---|
478 |
---|
479 | Stability and Bug Fixes
---|
480 | -----------------------
---|
481 | Some small problems in the recent 2.81rc release of Greenstone2 have been ironed
---|
482 | out to create an overall more robust release. Some features have been restored
---|
483 | (including realistic books and dynamic classifiers on Windows) and the
---|
484 | LuceneWrapper.jar file has been put back into the release.
---|
485 |
---|
486 | GDBM
---|
487 | ----
---|
488 | Greenstone now comes with it's own modified version of gdbm which can
---|
489 | auto-detect the format of database files (ldb or bdb format) and load either
---|
490 | format on any of Greenstone's supported platforms. This achieves a better level
---|
491 | of portability for Greenstone collections, and allows collections built on one
---|
492 | operating system to be served from other operating systems supported by
---|
493 | Greenstone.
---|
494 |
---|
495 |
---|
496 | Installer improvements
---|
497 | ----------------------
---|
498 | * The new installer:
---|
499 | - is now available in five languages
---|
500 | - can now cope with being executed from a path with accented characters and
---|
501 | other special characters. (There is still a known issue with chinese
---|
502 | file paths, which can be avoided by simply running from c:\ or another path
---|
503 | with no special characters.)
---|
504 | * The source release is now provided as a platform-independent zip / tar archive
---|
505 | * We now provide a simple binary zip / tar distribution for each platform
---|
506 |
---|
507 |
---|
508 | Vista Compatibility
---|
509 | -------------------
---|
510 | * When Greenstone is installed into the Program Files directory on Windows Vista,
---|
511 | it is necessary to elevate to a higher access level to run GLI and the
---|
512 | Greenstone server. As of this release, you can do this by launching the Start
---|
513 | Menu items as an administrator. Just right-click the item and choose "Run as
---|
514 | Administator", or set "Run as Adminsitrator" in the shortcut properties.
---|
515 | Also, as a way to avoid having to elevate to higher access levels altogether,
---|
516 | the default installation directory is now inside the current user's home folder.
---|
517 |
---|
518 | * Some Windows Vista users have experienced a problem when perl outputs warning
---|
519 | messages in front of xml output passed to GLI. The error messages themselves are
---|
520 | not fatal, but cause the xml to become invalid, resulting in a GLI crash. GLI
---|
521 | has been modified to ignore these warning messages and thereby keep the validity
---|
522 | of the xml.
---|
523 |
---|
524 | New Start Menu icons and server image
---|
525 | -------------------------------------
---|
526 | Each item in a Greenstone Start Menu group is now has a unique icon so you can
---|
527 | tell which is which at a glance. We have also added some links to the wiki and
---|
528 | the Greenstone website for convenience. The old server image has also been
---|
529 | replaced with the new GS2 Server logo.
---|
530 |
---|
531 | The release notes from the 2.81rc release and included below:
---|
532 |
---|
533 | Release Name: 2.81rc
---|
534 |
---|
535 | The Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS/X and Source distributions of Greenstone v2.81rc
---|
536 | are now available for download from our sourceforge page:
---|
537 |
---|
538 | http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone

539 |

542 | http://www.greenstone.org/download
---|
543 |
---|
544 |
---|
545 | Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
---|
546 |
---|
547 | Installer:
---|
548 | --------------
---|
549 |
---|
550 | The Greenstone installer downloads are now created using only open source
---|
551 | software, including Ant Installer (http://antinstaller.sourceforge.net/),
---|
552 | Apache Ant (http://ant.apache.org/), our own search4j (based on launch4j
---|
553 | http://launch4j.sourceforge.net/), and our own Greenstone release kits.
---|
554 |
---|
555 | We felt it was essential to move away from our existing, closed-source
---|
556 | installer suite as it was not in the spirit of Greenstone to rely on
---|
557 | proprietary software, and it invited the unnecessary cost of keeping the suite
---|
558 | up-to-date.
---|
559 |
---|
560 | Using only open source software has also given us the freedom to customise the
---|
561 | user experience of the installers. Where a feature was lacking in one of the
---|
562 | open source packages, we have enjoyed the ability to "open the hood" and
---|
563 | implement it.
---|
564 |
---|
565 | With the development of the Greenstone release kits we are now able to generate
---|
566 | releases of Greenstone automatically and unattended. This process takes just
---|
567 | 20 minutes, and it has helped us a lot in the development and testing of new
---|
568 | features of Greenstone. We have been able to set up a feedback loop, where code
---|
569 | committed one day is included in an automatic nightly snapshot release made
---|
570 | available for download on our website the next day. Our users have also
---|
571 | benefited from being able to obtain up-to-date snapshot releases of Greenstone
---|
572 | in between our official releases.
---|
573 |
---|
574 | These daily snapshots are available through:
---|
575 |
---|
576 | http://www.greenstone.org/snapshots
---|
577 |
---|
578 | On Windows, the version number is included in the Start Menu which means that
---|
579 | multiple installations of Greenstone will have their own entries in the Start
---|
580 | Menu. The installer no longer writes to the registry, so installation no
---|
581 | longer requires administrator privileges.
---|
582 |
---|
583 | ImageMagick is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for all
---|
584 | platforms (previously it was only provided on a CD-ROM release) and includes
---|
585 | JPEG2000 support. The installer offers the option to install this or not.
---|
586 | You can skip installing it if you already have ImageMagick previously installed.
---|
587 |
---|
588 | Ghostscript is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for Windows
---|
589 | and Mac. The installer offers the option to install this or not. You can
---|
590 | skip installing it if you already have Ghostscript previously installed.
---|
591 |
---|
592 | Importing and Plugin Changes:
---|
593 | ------------------------------
---|
594 |
---|
595 | Plugin Restructuring: The plugins have been restructured. This has been done
---|
596 | mostly for coding efficiency. The most noticeable change is that plugins have
---|
597 | been renamed. xxxPlug now becomes xxxPlugin, and some have also had their names
---|
598 | modified or expanded to be clearer. For example, DBPlug is now DatabasePlugin,
---|
599 | PPTPlug is PowerPointPlugin. The complete list of new plugins can be seen at
---|
600 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Plugins. Old collections should
---|
601 | still build okay in GLI, which will map the old plugin names to the new ones.
---|
602 | Command line building should also work, but the configuration file won't be
---|
603 | altered to use the new names.
---|
604 |
---|
605 | A lot of work has been done trying to get Greenstone to work properly with
---|
606 | non-ascii filenames. Two versions of the filename are stored, [Source] for
---|
607 | displaying the filename, and [SourceFile] for linking to the file from a web page.
---|
608 |
---|
609 | The -smart_block option (most commonly seen with HTMLPlugin) has been deprecated
---|
610 | . Instead we have a first pass through the documents to find out which ones
---|
611 | should be blocked.
---|
612 |
---|
613 | MARCPlugin and MARCXMLPlugin can now map metadata to Qualified Dublin Core as
---|
614 | well as Dublin Core.
---|
615 |
---|
616 | MARCXMLPlugin now assigns metadata from metadata.xml files.
---|
617 |
---|
618 | EMAILPlugin now saves binary attachments as binary files on Windows
---|
619 |
---|
620 | ImagePlugin and PagedImagePlugin now offer the -cache_generated_images option
---|
621 | to prevent thumbnails and screenview images being recreated each import.
---|
622 |
---|
623 | OAIPlugin saves the metadata as Dublin Core rather than moving it all to the ex
---|
624 | metadata set. This means that it won't show up in the GLI unless the files are
---|
625 | exploded. Exploding is now available for OAI records.
---|
626 |
---|
627 | ProCitePlugin no longer uses the pc namespace. Metadata is stored using the
---|
628 | field names set in the workform definition, rather than using Field1Name and
---|
629 | Field1Value etc..
---|
630 |
---|
631 | -reversesort option to import.pl to be used with -sortmeta option to sort in
---|
632 | reverse order.
---|
633 |
---|
634 | Tidied up OID generation. OIDtype and OIDmetadata options are now available
---|
635 | for each plugin as well as globally from import.pl. Hashing usually occurs on
---|
636 | the original file, but some plugins specify that hashing should be done on the
---|
637 | Greenstone XML document.
---|
638 |
---|
639 | Building and Indexing Changes:
---|
640 | -------------------------------
---|
641 |
---|
642 | Improvements to Lucene incremental building. Lucene document identifiers now
---|
643 | match Greenstone identifiers, rather than 1, 2, 3, thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
644 | This improves search efficiency, and is another step towards true incremental
---|
645 | building. Rebuilding with no new documents shouldn't break the index.
---|
646 |
---|
647 | MGPP and Lucene building tidied up. 'allfields' now means combined searching
---|
648 | over all specified indexes (not all document metadata) for both mgpp and lucene.
---|
649 | 'metadata' will index all metadata, but no longer reindexes metadata that has
---|
650 | already been specified. MGPP indexing over combined fields now works properly.
---|
651 |
---|
652 | New collection configuration file option: infodbtype. Values include gdbm (the
---|
653 | default), gdbm-txtgz, sqlite, mssql. This specifies what database system to use
---|
654 | for the collection metadata database. Currently this needs to be added to
---|
655 | collect.cfg by hand, as it is not available in GLI yet.
---|
656 |
---|
657 | gdbm: the default, and is what has always been used previously. This is
---|
658 | platform dependent. It transfers between Windows and Linux, but not to/from a
---|
659 | Mac.
---|
660 |
---|
661 | gdbm-txtgz: A gzipped text version of the database. At runtime, the first time
---|
662 | this collection is accessed, it will be unpacked and converted to the
---|
663 | appropriate GDBM database using txt2db. This is a good choice if you are
---|
664 | creating a collection to be used on another operating system, especially if
---|
665 | one or more of those operating systems is a Mac.
---|
666 |
---|
667 | sqlite: Platform independent database using SQLite. The new dynamic classifiers
---|
668 | can be used with this database. Thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
669 |
---|
670 | mssql: Windows specific database using MS SQL Server. See
---|
671 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Using_MSSQL_for_Collection_Database
---|
672 | for information about how to set this up. The new dynamic classifiers
---|
673 | can be used with this database. Thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
674 |
---|
675 | Depositor:
---|
676 | ------------
---|
677 |
---|
678 | Collection editing using the Depositor is now enabled by default for the admin
---|
679 | user.
---|
680 |
---|
681 | The metadata fields offered for each document can now easily be customised
---|
682 | from the GLI.
---|
683 |
---|
684 | By default, the depositor will import and build each document into the
---|
685 | collection when it is added. It can now be easily set up to just "deposit"
---|
686 | the item without rebuilding.
---|
687 |
---|
688 | See http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_use_the_depositor for
---|
689 | more information.
---|
690 |
---|
691 | GLI
---|
692 | -------
---|
693 |
---|
694 | A new right-click file option for binary files that go through a conversion
---|
695 | process to be imported, such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint files. "Replace source
---|
696 | document with HTML" will convert the original file to HTML and replace it in
---|
697 | the collection. This means that the converted HTML (which may be unattractive)
---|
698 | can now be modified in the collection. This is available for Remote GLI too.
---|
699 |
---|
700 | A new right-click file option on the collection tree background to refresh the
---|
701 | file view. This is useful if you have manually added files to the collection
---|
702 | outside of GLI.
---|
703 |
---|
704 | MetadataXMLPlugin has been moved 'below the line' in the Plugins panel so
---|
705 | cannot be removed in GLI. If you are using GLI to add metadata, then you need
---|
706 | this plugin.
---|
707 |
---|
708 | The Export As option now only exports one collection at a time. Collections
---|
709 | can be exported as GreenstoneMETS, FedoraMETS, MARCXML and DSpace archive.
---|
710 |
---|
711 | 'NavigationBar pulldown' added to the list of format options - this makes the
---|
712 | navigation 'bar' a drop down list instead of a bar across the page.
---|
713 |
---|
714 | Lots of work done on making the Download panel work better, including getting
---|
715 | download processes to terminate when they are cancelled or when GLI is closed
---|
716 | while they are still running.
---|
717 |
---|
718 | New panel under the Format tab, "Depositor Metadata" which allows
---|
719 | customisation of which metadata fields should be offered in the depositor for
---|
720 | that collection.
---|
721 |
---|
722 | CJK segmentation option has been added to GLI. This doesn't do proper word
---|
723 | segmentation, but adds a space in between each CJK character. The character

724 | ranges have been expanded to work with Japanese and Korean. It is applied to
---|
725 | metadata as well as document text.
---|
726 |
---|
727 | Another new feature in Greenstone v2.81 is the ability to schedule the
---|
728 | automatic rebuilding of a greenstone collection using the GLI. There's a new
---|
729 | panel under the Create tab allowing the scheduling of automatic collection
---|
730 | rebuilding. Scheduling will require some configuration in order for it to work.
---|
731 | The following link has more information on how to do this for each platform:
---|
732 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Scheduled_Collection_Building_from_the_Librarian_Interface
---|
733 |
---|
734 | Greenstone Runtime:
---|
735 | ----------------------
---|
736 | New dynamic classifiers (if the collection uses sqlite or MSSQL as the
---|
737 | collection database). These are generated at runtime so do not require the
---|
738 | collection to be rebuilt for classifier changes. Another step towards true
---|
739 | incremental building. See
---|
740 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/More_about_classifiers#How_do_I_use_dynamic_classifiers.3F
---|
741 | for more information. Thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
742 |
---|
743 | Large code restructuring. Code is split between common-src, build-src and
---|
744 | runtime-src. Makes it easer to use code in other projets, such as Greenstone 3
---|
745 | and running Greenstone on an iPhone/iPod Touch.
---|
746 |
---|
747 | External links now default to going straight to the web page, rather than
---|
748 | showing a warning page first.
---|
749 |
---|
750 | Improvements to the oaiserver, thanks to DL Consulting. Resumption token
---|
751 | support has been added, and it now validates against online validation tools.
---|
752 |
---|
753 | Greenstone now compiles for Linux on 64-bit platforms. All programs are
---|
754 | compiled natively for 64-bit, except for those that rely on mg/mgpp, which
---|
755 | still need to be 32-bit compiled. As part of the configure/make process, the
---|
756 | correct flags are automatically set, so from the developers point of view you
---|
757 | compile up Greenstone on a 64-bit machine the exact same way you do for any
---|
758 | other Unix-based system.
---|
759 |
---|
760 | Greenstone should now compile with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
761 |
---|
762 | FLI - Fedora Librarian Interface
---|
763 | ---------------------------------
---|
764 |
---|
765 | The Fedora Librarian Interface (FLI) is very much like GLI in that it allows
---|
766 | you to gather together your documents. It then uses Greenstone's ability to
---|
767 | convert documents into the FedoraMETS format so that these can be ingested
---|
768 | (put into) a Fedora repository. The process of building a collection using FLI
---|
769 | exports documents into a repository maintained by a Fedora server rather than
---|
770 | one maintained by Greenstone. In order to use FLI, you will need to have
---|
771 | Fedora installed. More information on how to install Fedora and set it up
---|
772 | to work with FLI, and how to run FLI itself, can be found in the documents:

1146 | - The Greenstone 2 server's code is in C++.

1149 | a few more.

1150 | - The Greenstone Librarian Interface used by both Greenstone 2 and

1208 | Hello Doug,
---|
1209 |
---|
1210 | The ticket number 426 at Trac has not been updated to reflect the
---|
1211 | Greenstone Team's more recent discussions on the topic. It seems likely
---|
1212 | that we will be trying to use Open Office as an alternative means of
---|
1213 | converting various documents--particularly the different kinds of MS
---|
1214 | Office documents, such as .docx, ppt--where this is installed, else we
---|
1215 | may default to using the current conversion tools.
---|
1216 |
---|
1217 | You are right that a plugin to handle Open Office documents is also a
---|
1218 | requirement. Our present thinking at this stage is not to parse the docx
---|
1219 | or other MS Office formats ourselves, but to rather use Open Office's
---|
1220 | ability to convert them. Similarly, we might try to use Open Office
---|
1221 | itself to convert Open Office documents or otherwise fall back on the
---|
1222 | OpenDocument plugin (see below).
---|
1223 |
---|
1224 | Your intention in writing a plugin for OOXML sounds like it might not
---|
1225 | require Open Office to be installed in order to accomplish the
---|
1226 | conversion to HTML, is that right? It does sound very helpful.
---|
1227 |
---|
1228 | > I haven't dug into the OpenDocument plugin,
---|
1229 | At present, the OpenDocumentPlugin.pm seems to extract only the text
---|
1230 | from the document, going by what the starting comments say:
---|
1231 |
---|
1232 | # Processes OASIS Open Document format.
---|
1233 | # Word processing document: .odt, template: .ott
---|
1234 | # Spreadsheet document: .ods, template: .ots
---|
1235 | # Presentation document: .odp, template: .otp
---|
1236 | # Graphics document: .odg, template: .otg
---|
1237 | # Formulas document: .odf, template: .otf (not supported)
---|
1238 |
---|
1239 | #This basically extracts any text out of the document, but not much else.
---|
1240 |
---|
1241 | # this inherits ReadXMLFile, and therefore offers -xslt option, but does
---|
1242 | # nothing with it.

1450 | get an error when trying to build the Collection (I'm using the demo

1524 | Hi Stefan
---|
1525 |
---|
1526 | What are you trying to do exactly? You don't need a dbi file to build
---|
1527 | the demo collection. You can just run the Librarian Interface, open the
---|
1528 | demo collection (File->Open), then go to the Create tab and click build

1529 | collection.

1604 | Subject: [greenstone-devel] Final of Greenstone2.81 Released
---|
1605 | Message-ID: <[email protected]>
---|
1606 |
---|
1607 | Hello Users and Developers of Greenstone,
---|
1608 |
---|
1609 | We are pleased to announce that the Windows, GNU/Linux, MacOS and Source
---|
1610 | distributions of the finalised Greenstone2.81 are now available for
---|
1611 | download from our sourceforge page:
---|
1612 | http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone or from
---|
1613 | http://www.greenstone.org/download
---|
1614 |
---|
1615 | This is the finalised 2.81 release. It includes some bug fixes found in
---|
1616 | in 2.81rc2. If you are running a 2.81rc or 2.81rc2 please download and
---|
1617 | upgrade to this release. Our response to any mailing list questions
---|
1618 | about the 2.81rc or 2.81rc2 releases will simply be to ask you to
---|
1619 | upgrade to 2.81 first and see if that fixes the problem.
---|
1620 |
---|
1621 | As always, please report any problems or bugs to the mailing list.
---|
1622 |
---|
1623 | Many of us in the Greenstone Team will be taking leave over Christmas
---|
1624 | and throughout January. We wish all list members the best over the
---|
1625 | holiday season! An unfortunate side effect is, of course, that our
---|
1626 | responses on the mailing list may slow down over that period. We invite
---|
1627 | all list members to help each other out during this time - if you know
---|
1628 | the answer to a question someone else asks on the list, have confidence
---|
1629 | in answering, as it might be a while before one of the Greenstone team
---|
1630 | is available to reply.
---|
1631 |
---|
1632 | Happy Holidays,
---|
1633 | Oran and the rest of the Greenstone team.

1648 | This is the finalised 2.81 release. It includes some bug fixes found in in

1649 | 2.81rc2. If you are running a 2.81rc or 2.81rc2 please download and
---|
1650 | upgrade to
---|
1651 | this release.
---|
1652 |
---|
1653 | Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
---|
1654 |
---|
1655 | wvWare updated
---|
1656 | --------------
---|
1657 | We have upgraded the version of wvWare included with Greenstone in the Linux
---|
1658 | binary releases to version 1.2.4. It was not possible to do the same for the
---|
1659 | MacOS binary distribution without shipping around 80Mb of additional
---|
1660 | libraries,
---|
1661 | so the MacOS binary release still comes with version 0.7.1. MacOS users may
---|
1662 | upgrade wvWare if needed by downloading it from
---|
1663 | http://wvware.sourceforge.net/ and compiling it. Source users will also
---|
1664 | still get version 0.7.1 but may upgrade in the same way.
---|
1665 |
---|
1666 |
---|
1667 | The release notes from the 2.81rc2 release and included below:

1668 |

1669 | Release Name: 2.81rc2

1670 |

1671 | The Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS/X and Source distributions of Greenstone

1672 | v2.81rc2

1673 | are now available for download from our sourceforge page:

1680 |
---|
1681 |
---|
1682 | Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
---|
1683 |
---|
1684 | Stability and Bug Fixes
---|
1685 | -----------------------
---|
1686 | Some small problems in the recent 2.81rc release of Greenstone2 have
---|
1687 | been ironed
---|
1688 | out to create an overall more robust release. Some features have been
---|
1689 | restored
---|
1690 | (including realistic books and dynamic classifiers on Windows) and the
---|
1691 | LuceneWrapper.jar file has been put back into the release.
---|
1692 |
---|
1693 | GDBM
---|
1694 | ----
---|
1695 | Greenstone now comes with it's own modified version of gdbm which can
---|
1696 | auto-detect the format of database files (ldb or bdb format) and load either
---|
1697 | format on any of Greenstone's supported platforms. This achieves a
---|
1698 | better level
---|
1699 | of portability for Greenstone collections, and allows collections built
---|
1700 | on one
---|
1701 | operating system to be served from other operating systems supported by
---|
1702 | Greenstone.
---|
1703 |
---|
1704 |
---|
1705 | Installer improvements
---|
1706 | ----------------------
---|
1707 | * The new installer:
---|
1708 | - is now available in five languages
---|
1709 | - can now cope with being executed from a path with accented
---|
1710 | characters and
---|
1711 | other special characters. (There is still a known issue with chinese
---|
1712 | file paths, which can be avoided by simply running from c:\ or
---|
1713 | another path
---|
1714 | with no special characters.)
---|
1715 | * The source release is now provided as a platform-independent zip / tar
---|
1716 | archive
---|
1717 | * We now provide a simple binary zip / tar distribution for each platform
---|
1718 |
---|
1719 |
---|
1720 | Vista Compatibility
---|
1721 | -------------------
---|
1722 | * When Greenstone is installed into the Program Files directory on Windows
---|
1723 | Vista, it is necessary to elevate to a higher access level to run GLI
---|
1724 | and the
---|
1725 | Greenstone server. As of this release, you can do this by launching the
---|
1726 | Start
---|
1727 | Menu items as an administrator. Just right-click the item and choose "Run as
---|
1728 | Administator", or set "Run as Adminsitrator" in the shortcut properties.
---|
1729 | Also, as a way to avoid having to elevate to higher access levels
---|
1730 | altogether,
---|
1731 | the default installation directory is now inside the current user's home
---|
1732 | folder.
---|
1733 |
---|
1734 | * Some Windows Vista users have experienced a problem when perl outputs
---|
1735 | warning
---|
1736 | messages in front of xml output passed to GLI. The error messages
---|
1737 | themselves are
---|
1738 | not fatal, but cause the xml to become invalid, resulting in a GLI
---|
1739 | crash. GLI
---|
1740 | has been modified to ignore these warning messages and thereby keep the
---|
1741 | validity
---|
1742 | of the xml.
---|
1743 |
---|
1744 | New Start Menu icons and server image
---|
1745 | -------------------------------------
---|
1746 | Each item in a Greenstone Start Menu group is now has a unique icon so
---|
1747 | you can
---|
1748 | tell which is which at a glance. We have also added some links to the
---|
1749 | wiki and
---|
1750 | the Greenstone website for convenience. The old server image has also been
---|
1751 | replaced with the new GS2 Server logo.

---|
1767 |
---|
1768 | Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
---|
1769 |
---|
1770 | Installer:
---|
1771 | --------------
---|
1772 |
---|
1773 | The Greenstone installer downloads are now created using only open source
---|
1774 | software, including Ant Installer (http://antinstaller.sourceforge.net/),
---|
1775 | Apache Ant (http://ant.apache.org/), our own search4j (based on launch4j
---|
1776 | http://launch4j.sourceforge.net/), and our own Greenstone release kits.
---|
1777 |
---|
1778 | We felt it was essential to move away from our existing, closed-source
---|
1779 | installer suite as it was not in the spirit of Greenstone to rely on
---|
1780 | proprietary software, and it invited the unnecessary cost of keeping the
---|
1781 | suite
---|
1782 | up-to-date.
---|
1783 |
---|
1784 | Using only open source software has also given us the freedom to
---|
1785 | customise the
---|
1786 | user experience of the installers. Where a feature was lacking in one of
---|
1787 | the
---|
1788 | open source packages, we have enjoyed the ability to "open the hood" and
---|
1789 | implement it.
---|
1790 |
---|
1791 | With the development of the Greenstone release kits we are now able to
---|
1792 | generate
---|
1793 | releases of Greenstone automatically and unattended. This process takes
---|
1794 | just
---|
1795 | 20 minutes, and it has helped us a lot in the development and testing of
---|
1796 | new
---|
1797 | features of Greenstone. We have been able to set up a feedback loop,
---|
1798 | where code
---|
1799 | committed one day is included in an automatic nightly snapshot release
---|
1800 | made
---|
1801 | available for download on our website the next day. Our users have also
---|
1802 | benefited from being able to obtain up-to-date snapshot releases of
---|
1803 | Greenstone
---|
1804 | in between our official releases.
---|
1805 |
---|
1806 | These daily snapshots are available through:
---|
1807 |
---|
1808 | http://www.greenstone.org/snapshots
---|
1809 |
---|
1810 | On Windows, the version number is included in the Start Menu which means
---|
1811 | that
---|
1812 | multiple installations of Greenstone will have their own entries in the
---|
1813 | Start
---|
1814 | Menu. The installer no longer writes to the registry, so installation no
---|
1815 | longer requires administrator privileges.
---|
1816 |
---|
1817 | ImageMagick is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for all
---|
1818 | platforms (previously it was only provided on a CD-ROM release) and
---|
1819 | includes
---|
1820 | JPEG2000 support. The installer offers the option to install this or not.
---|
1821 | You can skip installing it if you already have ImageMagick previously
---|
1822 | installed.
---|
1823 |
---|
1824 | Ghostscript is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for
---|
1825 | Windows
---|
1826 | and Mac. The installer offers the option to install this or not. You can
---|
1827 | skip installing it if you already have Ghostscript previously installed.
---|
1828 |
---|
1829 | Importing and Plugin Changes:
---|
1830 | ------------------------------
---|
1831 |
---|
1832 | Plugin Restructuring: The plugins have been restructured. This has been
---|
1833 | done
---|
1834 | mostly for coding efficiency. The most noticeable change is that plugins
---|
1835 | have
---|
1836 | been renamed. xxxPlug now becomes xxxPlugin, and some have also had
---|
1837 | their names
---|
1838 | modified or expanded to be clearer. For example, DBPlug is now
---|
1839 | DatabasePlugin,
---|
1840 | PPTPlug is PowerPointPlugin. The complete list of new plugins can be
---|
1841 | seen at
---|
1842 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Plugins. Old collections should
---|
1843 | still build okay in GLI, which will map the old plugin names to the new
---|
1844 | ones.
---|
1845 | Command line building should also work, but the configuration file won't be
---|
1846 | altered to use the new names.
---|
1847 |
---|
1848 | A lot of work has been done trying to get Greenstone to work properly with
---|
1849 | non-ascii filenames. Two versions of the filename are stored, [Source] for
---|
1850 | displaying the filename, and [SourceFile] for linking to the file from a web
---|
1851 | page.
---|
1852 |
---|
1853 | The -smart_block option (most commonly seen with HTMLPlugin) has been
---|
1854 | deprecated
---|
1855 | . Instead we have a first pass through the documents to find out which ones
---|
1856 | should be blocked.
---|
1857 |
---|
1858 | MARCPlugin and MARCXMLPlugin can now map metadata to Qualified Dublin
---|
1859 | Core as
---|
1860 | well as Dublin Core.
---|
1861 |
---|
1862 | MARCXMLPlugin now assigns metadata from metadata.xml files.
---|
1863 |
---|
1864 | EMAILPlugin now saves binary attachments as binary files on Windows
---|
1865 |
---|
1866 | ImagePlugin and PagedImagePlugin now offer the -cache_generated_images
---|
1867 | option
---|
1868 | to prevent thumbnails and screenview images being recreated each import.
---|
1869 |
---|
1870 | OAIPlugin saves the metadata as Dublin Core rather than moving it all to
---|
1871 | the ex
---|
1872 | metadata set. This means that it won't show up in the GLI unless the
---|
1873 | files are
---|
1874 | exploded. Exploding is now available for OAI records.
---|
1875 |
---|
1876 | ProCitePlugin no longer uses the pc namespace. Metadata is stored using the
---|
1877 | field names set in the workform definition, rather than using Field1Name
---|
1878 | and
---|
1879 | Field1Value etc..
---|
1880 |
---|
1881 | -reversesort option to import.pl to be used with -sortmeta option to
---|
1882 | sort in
---|
1883 | reverse order.
---|
1884 |
---|
1885 | Tidied up OID generation. OIDtype and OIDmetadata options are now available
---|
1886 | for each plugin as well as globally from import.pl. Hashing usually
---|
1887 | occurs on
---|
1888 | the original file, but some plugins specify that hashing should be done
---|
1889 | on the
---|
1890 | Greenstone XML document.
---|
1891 |
---|
1892 | Building and Indexing Changes:
---|
1893 | -------------------------------
---|
1894 |
---|
1895 | Improvements to Lucene incremental building. Lucene document identifiers
---|
1896 | now
---|
1897 | match Greenstone identifiers, rather than 1, 2, 3, thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
1898 | This improves search efficiency, and is another step towards true
---|
1899 | incremental
---|
1900 | building. Rebuilding with no new documents shouldn't break the index.
---|
1901 |
---|
1902 | MGPP and Lucene building tidied up. 'allfields' now means combined
---|
1903 | searching
---|
1904 | over all specified indexes (not all document metadata) for both mgpp and
---|
1905 | lucene.
---|
1906 | 'metadata' will index all metadata, but no longer reindexes metadata
---|
1907 | that has
---|
1908 | already been specified. MGPP indexing over combined fields now works
---|
1909 | properly.
---|
1910 |
---|
1911 | New collection configuration file option: infodbtype. Values include
---|
1912 | gdbm (the
---|
1913 | default), gdbm-txtgz, sqlite, mssql. This specifies what database system
---|
1914 | to use
---|
1915 | for the collection metadata database. Currently this needs to be added to
---|
1916 | collect.cfg by hand, as it is not available in GLI yet.
---|
1917 |
---|
1918 | gdbm: the default, and is what has always been used previously. This is
---|
1919 | platform dependent. It transfers between Windows and Linux, but not
---|
1920 | to/from a
---|
1921 | Mac.
---|
1922 |
---|
1923 | gdbm-txtgz: A gzipped text version of the database. At runtime, the
---|
1924 | first time
---|
1925 | this collection is accessed, it will be unpacked and converted to the
---|
1926 | appropriate GDBM database using txt2db. This is a good choice if you are
---|
1927 | creating a collection to be used on another operating system, especially if
---|
1928 | one or more of those operating systems is a Mac.
---|
1929 |
---|
1930 | sqlite: Platform independent database using SQLite. The new dynamic
---|
1931 | classifiers
---|
1932 | can be used with this database. Thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
1933 |
---|
1934 | mssql: Windows specific database using MS SQL Server. See
---|
1935 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Using_MSSQL_for_Collection_Database
---|
1936 |
---|
1937 | for information about how to set this up. The new dynamic classifiers
---|
1938 | can be used with this database. Thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
1939 |
---|
1940 | Depositor:
---|
1941 | ------------
---|
1942 |
---|
1943 | Collection editing using the Depositor is now enabled by default for the
---|
1944 | admin
---|
1945 | user.
---|
1946 |
---|
1947 | The metadata fields offered for each document can now easily be customised
---|
1948 | from the GLI.
---|
1949 |
---|
1950 | By default, the depositor will import and build each document into the
---|
1951 | collection when it is added. It can now be easily set up to just "deposit"
---|
1952 | the item without rebuilding.
---|
1953 |
---|
1954 | See http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_use_the_depositor for
---|
1955 | more information.
---|
1956 |
---|
1957 | GLI
---|
1958 | -------
---|
1959 |
---|
1960 | A new right-click file option for binary files that go through a conversion
---|
1961 | process to be imported, such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint files. "Replace
---|
1962 | source
---|
1963 | document with HTML" will convert the original file to HTML and replace
---|
1964 | it in
---|
1965 | the collection. This means that the converted HTML (which may be
---|
1966 | unattractive)
---|
1967 | can now be modified in the collection. This is available for Remote GLI too.
---|
1968 |
---|
1969 | A new right-click file option on the collection tree background to
---|
1970 | refresh the
---|
1971 | file view. This is useful if you have manually added files to the
---|
1972 | collection
---|
1973 | outside of GLI.
---|
1974 |
---|
1975 | MetadataXMLPlugin has been moved 'below the line' in the Plugins panel so
---|
1976 | cannot be removed in GLI. If you are using GLI to add metadata, then you
---|
1977 | need
---|
1978 | this plugin.
---|
1979 |
---|
1980 | The Export As option now only exports one collection at a time. Collections
---|
1981 | can be exported as GreenstoneMETS, FedoraMETS, MARCXML and DSpace archive.
---|
1982 |
---|
1983 | 'NavigationBar pulldown' added to the list of format options - this
---|
1984 | makes the
---|
1985 | navigation 'bar' a drop down list instead of a bar across the page.
---|
1986 |
---|
1987 | Lots of work done on making the Download panel work better, including
---|
1988 | getting
---|
1989 | download processes to terminate when they are cancelled or when GLI is
---|
1990 | closed
---|
1991 | while they are still running.
---|
1992 |
---|
1993 | New panel under the Format tab, "Depositor Metadata" which allows
---|
1994 | customisation of which metadata fields should be offered in the
---|
1995 | depositor for
---|
1996 | that collection.
---|
1997 |
---|
1998 | CJK segmentation option has been added to GLI. This doesn't do proper word
---|
1999 | segmentation, but adds a space in between each CJK character. The character
---|
2000 | ranges have been expanded to work with Japanese and Korean. It is
---|
2001 | applied to
---|
2002 | metadata as well as document text.
---|
2003 |
---|
2004 | Another new feature in Greenstone v2.81 is the ability to schedule the
---|
2005 | automatic rebuilding of a greenstone collection using the GLI. There's a new
---|
2006 | panel under the Create tab allowing the scheduling of automatic collection
---|
2007 | rebuilding. Scheduling will require some configuration in order for it
---|
2008 | to work.
---|
2009 | The following link has more information on how to do this for each platform:
---|
2010 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Scheduled_Collection_Building_from_the_Librarian_Interface
---|
2011 |
---|
2012 | Greenstone Runtime:
---|
2013 | ----------------------
---|
2014 | New dynamic classifiers (if the collection uses sqlite or MSSQL as the
---|
2015 | collection database). These are generated at runtime so do not require the
---|
2016 | collection to be rebuilt for classifier changes. Another step towards true
---|
2017 | incremental building. See
---|
2018 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/More_about_classifiers#How_do_I_use_dynamic_classifiers.3F
---|
2019 |
---|
2020 | for more information. Thanks to DL Consulting.
---|
2021 |
---|
2022 | Large code restructuring. Code is split between common-src, build-src and
---|
2023 | runtime-src. Makes it easer to use code in other projets, such as
---|
2024 | Greenstone 3
---|
2025 | and running Greenstone on an iPhone/iPod Touch.
---|
2026 |
---|
2027 | External links now default to going straight to the web page, rather than
---|
2028 | showing a warning page first.
---|
2029 |
---|
2030 | Improvements to the oaiserver, thanks to DL Consulting. Resumption token
---|
2031 | support has been added, and it now validates against online validation
---|
2032 | tools.
---|
2033 |
---|
2034 | Greenstone now compiles for Linux on 64-bit platforms. All programs are
---|
2035 | compiled natively for 64-bit, except for those that rely on mg/mgpp, which
---|
2036 | still need to be 32-bit compiled. As part of the configure/make
---|
2037 | process, the
---|
2038 | correct flags are automatically set, so from the developers point of
---|
2039 | view you
---|
2040 | compile up Greenstone on a 64-bit machine the exact same way you do for any
---|
2041 | other Unix-based system.
---|
2042 |
---|
2043 | Greenstone should now compile with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, thanks
---|
2044 | to DL
---|
2045 | Consulting.
---|
2046 |
---|
2047 | FLI - Fedora Librarian Interface
---|
2048 | ---------------------------------
---|
2049 |
---|
2050 | The Fedora Librarian Interface (FLI) is very much like GLI in that it
---|
2051 | allows
---|
2052 | you to gather together your documents. It then uses Greenstone's ability to
---|
2053 | convert documents into the FedoraMETS format so that these can be ingested
---|
2054 | (put into) a Fedora repository. The process of building a collection
---|
2055 | using FLI
---|
2056 | exports documents into a repository maintained by a Fedora server rather
---|
2057 | than
---|
2058 | one maintained by Greenstone. In order to use FLI, you will need to have
---|
2059 | Fedora installed. More information on how to install Fedora and set it up
---|
2060 | to work with FLI, and how to run FLI itself, can be found in the documents:

2114 | matc.mellon.org/press-release). This competition is meant "to
---|
2115 | recognize important organizational contributions to open source
---|
2116 | projects which currently or potentially provide significant benefits
---|
2117 | to at least one traditional Mellon constituency (higher education,
---|
2118 | especially the arts and humanities; libraries; museums; arts
---|
2119 | organizations; and nature conservation)." We understand that the
---|
2120 | committee was primarily impressed by Greenstone's impact in the
---|
2121 | developing world as testified by many users who supported our
---|
2122 | candidacy online, thanks to all of you who contributed recommendations.
---|
2123 |
---|
2124 | The University intends to use the award to further the Greenstone
---|
2125 | community of developers and users, particularly in developing
---|
2126 | countries. This will involve improving the documentation, making
---|
2127 | tutorial videos, and stimulating the development of Greenstone
---|
2128 | capabilities and user groups in developing countries.
---|
2129 |
---|
2130 | As part of this effort we invite proposals from the Greenstone
---|
2131 | community in developing countries for small grants (US$1000 to US
---|
2132 | $5000) which will be awarded in 2009 according to the following
---|
2133 | criteria:
---|
2134 |
---|
2135 | * one-time assistance (not a continuing subvention) for a project
---|
2136 | which will lead to sustainable follow-up: examples of activity could
---|
2137 | be organisation of user meetings or training workshops, expert
---|
2138 | missions for training and advice (particularly exchange of expertise
---|
2139 | within a given region or country), institutional exchanges or user
---|
2140 | services;
---|
2141 | * priority to regional networks and to countries and institutions in
---|
2142 | greatest need (normally grants will not available to individuals, but
---|
2143 | there could be exceptions);
---|
2144 | * priority to projects which are partially self-funded or partially
---|
2145 | funded by third parties.
---|
2146 |
---|
2147 | Detailed proposals should be addressed to John Rose
---|
2148 | <[email protected]>, Research Associate, University of Waikato, who
---|
2149 | will correspond with the submitting parties as needed to refine their
---|
2150 | proposals. Awardees will be expected to submit a detailed evaluation
---|
2151 | report at the conclusion of their projects.

2164 | Hello,
---|
2165 |
---|
2166 | Does anyone have a solution for updating metadata in a batch in
---|
2167 | Greenstone? We can do search and replace in the XML, but that's not
---|
2168 | ideal.

2195 | Hi,
---|
2196 |
---|
2197 | I know that if you load a collection into the GLI, and go to the Enrich
---|
2198 | panel, you can select multiple documents with the mouse and cntl/shift
---|
2199 | keys. Then, when you enter metadata (for example, dc.Title), this will be
---|
2200 | entered for all documents that you have selected.
---|
2201 |
---|
2202 | Hope this helps,
---|
