50 |
---|
51 | Hi list,
---|
52 |
---|
53 | it is well known that every document in import folder generates a folder in
---|
54 | archives after the import process. Then, building process copies all source
---|
55 | files to index/assoc, so we have duplicated disk space needed to host all
---|
56 | files.
---|
57 |
---|
58 | I have a collection with almost 700.000 tiff files, all imported with
---|
59 | Pagedimgplug. This collection is not a static one, every couple of days we
---|
60 | add new documents, so we have two options:
---|
61 |
---|
62 | 1- Use Lucene and incremental building: this sounds interesting but we have
---|
63 | many problems with parsing doc.xml files, accents and many other things.
---|
64 |
---|
65 | 2- Use MGPP: it works great, we have all the features we need but
---|
66 | incremental indexing is not possible. So every few days we have to reindex
---|
67 | all again, and again... This approach consumes a reasonable time to generate
---|
68 | indexes, but it spends a lot of time copying 700.000 files from archives to
---|
69 | building/assoc, and deleting the old index folder with the other 700.000
---|
70 | files.
---|
71 |
---|
72 | The questions are:
---|
73 |
---|
74 | a- Is it possible to link to source files directly from archives folder?.
---|
75 | This will result in saving a lot of time because copying files form archives
---|
76 | to assoc is no more necessary. I remember that someone asked for something
---|
77 | like this, but I canŽt find the mail in the email archives collection. I
---|
78 | think that builcol.pl must be modified to work this way. Is there anybody
---|
79 | out there that can do it?.
---|
80 |
---|
81 | b- Is it possible to add an option to future releases where the user can
---|
82 | choose weather buildcol with source docs in place (in archives folders) or
---|
83 | not?.
---|
84 |
---|
85 | TIA.

99 | hello every one i am amin
---|
100 | and i got some questions about collection customization in GS3
---|
101 | what i want to do hear is to build a collection whit some pdf file whit Marc
---|
102 | metadata description but i do not want to show the compleate pdfs on the
---|
103 | greenstone
---|
104 | online interface but the only marc metadata descryption should be shown in
---|
105 | the there whit a linke to the pdf file for download , for now the only
---|
106 | search options would be the mark metadata file field to be searched
---|
107 | ok now
---|
108 |
---|
109 | 1 . is there any way for me to do this whit the standard greenstone plugins
---|
110 | and collections ?
---|
111 | 2 . or should i make my own Collections if so i would like to now where to
---|
112 | start at ?
---|
113 |
---|
114 | so far i have read the Greenstone3 manual and got farmiliar whit the
---|
115 | architecture consepts and service developments

116 | but i couldent find some good resources for plugin developements if there is

117 | any out there i would appreciate it if some one woulde let me now about it.

128 |
---|
129 | Hi everyone,
---|
130 |
---|
131 | We are pleased to announce that the Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS/X and
---|
132 | Source distributions of Greenstone v2.81
---|
133 | are now available for download from our sourceforge page:
---|
134 | http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone or from
---|
135 | http://www.greenstone.org/download
---|
136 |
---|
137 | Release notes are copied below.
---|
138 |
---|
139 | This has been a long time coming, thank you for your patience.
---|
140 |
---|
141 | As always, please report any problems or bugs to the mailing list.

145 |
---|
146 | ------------------------------
---|
147 | Greenstone 2.81 release notes
---|
148 | ------------------------------
---|
149 |
---|
150 | Important changes in this release include, in no particular order:
---|
151 |
---|
152 | Installer:
---|
153 | --------------
---|
154 |
---|
155 | The Greenstone installer downloads are now created using only open source
---|
156 | software, including Ant Installer (http://antinstaller.sourceforge.net/),
---|
157 | Apache Ant (http://ant.apache.org/), our own search4j (based on launch4j
---|
158 | http://launch4j.sourceforge.net/), and our own Greenstone release kits.
---|
159 |
---|
160 | We felt it was essential to move away from our existing, closed-source
---|
161 | installer suite as it was not in the spirit of Greenstone to rely on
---|
162 | proprietary software, and it invited the unnecessary cost of keeping the
---|
163 | suite
---|
164 | up-to-date.
---|
165 |
---|
166 | Using only open source software has also given us the freedom to
---|
167 | customise the
---|
168 | user experience of the installers. Where a feature was lacking in one of
---|
169 | the
---|
170 | open source packages, we have enjoyed the ability to "open the hood" and
---|
171 | implement it.
---|
172 |
---|
173 | With the development of the Greenstone release kits we are now able to
---|
174 | generate
---|
175 | releases of Greenstone automatically and unattended. This process
---|
176 | takes just
---|
177 | 20 minutes, and it has helped us a lot in the development and testing of
---|
178 | new
---|
179 | features of Greenstone. We have been able to set up a feedback loop,
---|
180 | where code
---|
181 | committed one day is included in an automatic nightly snapshot release
---|
182 | made
---|
183 | available for download on our website the next day. Our users have also
---|
184 | benefited from being able to obtain up-to-date snapshot releases of
---|
185 | Greenstone
---|
186 | in between our official releases.
---|
187 |
---|
188 | These daily snapshots are available through:
---|
189 |
---|
190 | http://www.greenstone.org/snapshots
---|
191 |
---|
192 | On Windows, the version number is included in the Start Menu which means
---|
193 | that
---|
194 | multiple installations of Greenstone will have their own entries in the
---|
195 | Start
---|
196 | Menu. The installer no longer writes to the registry, so installation no
---|
197 | longer requires administrator privileges.
---|
198 |
---|
199 | ImageMagick is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for all
---|
200 | platforms (previously it was only provided on a CD-ROM release) and
---|
201 | includes
---|
202 | JPEG2000 support. The installer offers the option to install this or not.
---|
203 | You can skip installing it if you already have ImageMagick previously
---|
204 | installed.
---|
205 |
---|
206 | Ghostscript is now bundled with Greenstone for binary web releases for
---|
207 | Windows
---|
208 | and Mac. The installer offers the option to install this or not. You can
---|
209 | skip installing it if you already have Ghostscript previously installed.
---|
210 |
---|
211 | Importing and Plugin Changes:
---|
212 | ------------------------------
---|
213 |
---|
214 | Plugin Restructuring: The plugins have been restructured. This has been
---|
215 | done
---|
216 | mostly for coding efficiency. The most noticeable change is that plugins
---|
217 | have
---|
218 | been renamed. xxxPlug now becomes xxxPlugin, and some have also had
---|
219 | their names
---|
220 | modified or expanded to be clearer. For example, DBPlug is now
---|
221 | DatabasePlugin,
---|
222 | PPTPlug is PowerPointPlugin. The complete list of new plugins can be
---|
223 | seen at
---|
224 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Plugins. Old collections should
---|
225 | still build okay in GLI, which will map the old plugin names to the new
---|
226 | ones.
---|
227 | Command line building should also work, but the configuration file won't be
---|
228 | altered to use the new names.
---|
229 |
---|
230 | A lot of work has been done trying to get Greenstone to work properly with
---|
231 | non-ascii filenames. Two versions of the filename are stored, [Source] for
---|
232 | displaying the filename, and [SourceFile] for linking to the file from a
---|
233 | web page.
---|
234 |
---|
235 | The -smart_block option (most commonly seen with HTMLPlugin) has been
---|
236 | deprecated
---|
237 | . Instead we have a first pass through the documents to find out which ones
---|
238 | should be blocked.
---|
239 |
---|
240 | MARCPlugin and MARCXMLPlugin can now map metadata to Qualified Dublin
---|
241 | Core as
---|
242 | well as Dublin Core.
---|
243 |
---|
244 | MARCXMLPlugin now assigns metadata from metadata.xml files.
---|
245 |
---|
246 | EMAILPlugin now saves binary attachments as binary files on Windows
---|
247 |
---|
248 | ImagePlugin and PagedImagePlugin now offer the -cache_generated_images
---|
249 | option
---|
250 | to prevent thumbnails and screenview images being recreated each import.
---|
251 |
---|
252 | OAIPlugin saves the metadata as Dublin Core rather than moving it all to
---|
253 | the ex
---|
254 | metadata set. This means that it won't show up in the GLI unless the
---|
255 | files are
---|
256 | exploded. Exploding is now available for OAI records.
---|
257 |
---|
258 | ProCitePlugin no longer uses the pc namespace. Metadata is stored using the
---|
259 | field names set in the workform definition, rather than using Field1Name
---|
260 | and
---|
261 | Field1Value etc..
---|
262 |
---|
263 | -reversesort option to import.pl to be used with -sortmeta option to
---|
264 | sort in
---|
265 | reverse order.
---|
266 |
---|
267 | Tidied up OID generation. OIDtype and OIDmetadata options are now available
---|
268 | for each plugin as well as globally from import.pl. Hashing usually
---|
269 | occurs on
---|
270 | the original file, but some plugins specify that hashing should be done
---|
271 | on the
---|
272 | Greenstone XML document.
---|
273 |
---|
274 | Building and Indexing Changes:
---|
275 | -------------------------------
---|
276 |
---|
277 | Improvements to Lucene incremental building. Lucene document identifiers
---|
278 | now
---|
279 | match Greenstone identifiers, rather than 1, 2, 3. Rebuilding with no new
---|
280 | documents shouldn't break the index.
---|
281 |
---|
282 | MGPP and Lucene building tidied up. 'allfields' now means combined
---|
283 | searching
---|
284 | over all specified indexes (not all document metadata) for both mgpp and
---|
285 | lucene.
---|
286 | 'metadata' will index all metadata, but no longer reindexes metadata
---|
287 | that has
---|
288 | already been specified. MGPP indexing over combined fields now works
---|
289 | properly.
---|
290 |
---|
291 | New collection configuration file option: infodbtype. Values include
---|
292 | gdbm (the
---|
293 | default), gdbm-txtgz, sqlite, mssql. This specifies what database system
---|
294 | to use
---|
295 | for the collection metadata database. Currently this needs to be added to
---|
296 | collect.cfg by hand, as it is not available in GLI yet.
---|
297 |
---|
298 | gdbm: the default, and is what has always been used previously. This is
---|
299 | platform dependent. It transfers between Windows and Linux, but not
---|
300 | to/from a
---|
301 | Mac.
---|
302 |
---|
303 | gdbm-txtgz: A gzipped text version of the database. At runtime, the
---|
304 | first time
---|
305 | this collection is accessed, it will be unpacked and converted to the
---|
306 | appropriate GDBM database using txt2db. This is a good choice if you are
---|
307 | creating a collection to be used on another operating system, especially if
---|
308 | one or more of those operating systems is a Mac.
---|
309 |
---|
310 | sqlite: Platform independent database using SQLite. The new dynamic
---|
311 | classifiers
---|
312 | (created at runtime) can be used with this database. See
---|
313 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/More_about_classifiers#How_do_I_use_dynamic_classifiers.3F
---|
314 |
---|
315 | for more information. Thanks to DL Consulting
---|
316 |
---|
317 | mssql: Windows specific database using MS SQL Server. See
---|
318 | http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Using_MSSQL_for_Collection_Database
---|
319 |
---|
320 | for information about how to set this up. Thanks to DL Consulting
---|
321 |
---|
322 | Depositor:
---|
323 | ------------
---|
324 |
---|
325 | Collection editing using the Depositor is now enabled by default for the
---|
326 | admin
---|
327 | user.
---|
328 |
---|
329 | The metadata fields offered for each document can now easily be customised
---|
330 | from the GLI.
---|
331 |
---|
332 | By default, the depositor will import and build each document into the
---|
333 | collection when it is added. It can now be easily set up to just "deposit"
---|
334 | the item without rebuilding.
---|
335 |
---|
336 | See http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_use_the_depositor for
---|
337 | more information.
---|
338 |
---|
339 | GLI
---|
340 | -------
---|
341 |
---|
342 | A new right-click file option for binary files that go through a conversion
---|
343 | process to be imported, such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint files. "Replace
---|
344 | source
---|
345 | document with HTML" will convert the original file to HTML and replace
---|
346 | it in
---|
347 | the collection. This means that the converted HTML (which may be
---|
348 | unattractive)
---|
349 | can now be modified in the collection. This is available for Remote GLI too.
---|
350 |
---|
351 | A new right-click file option on the collection tree background to
---|
352 | refresh the
---|
353 | file view. This is useful if you have manually added files to the
---|
354 | collection
---|
355 | outside of GLI.
---|
356 |
---|
357 | MetadataXMLPlugin has been moved 'below the line' in the Plugins panel so
---|
358 | cannot be removed in GLI. If you are using GLI to add metadata, then you
---|
359 | need
---|
360 | this plugin.
---|
361 |
---|
362 | The Export As option now only exports one collection at a time. Collections
---|
363 | can be exported as GreenstoneMETS, FedoraMETS, MARCXML and DSpace archive.
---|
364 |
---|
365 | 'NavigationBar pulldown' added to the list of format options - this
---|
366 | makes the
---|
367 | navigation 'bar' a drop down list instead of a bar across the page.
---|
368 |
---|
369 | Lots of work done on making the Download panel work better, including
---|
370 | getting
---|
371 | download processes to terminate when they are cancelled or when GLI is
---|
372 | closed
---|
373 | while they are still running.
---|
374 |
---|
375 | New panel under the Format tab, "Depositor Metadata" which allows
---|
376 | customisation of which metadata fields should be offered in the
---|
377 | depositor for
---|
378 | that collection.
---|
379 |
---|
380 | CJK segmentation option has been added to GLI. This doesn't do proper word
---|
381 | segmentation, but adds a space in between each CJK character. The character
---|
382 | ranges have been expanded to work with Japanese and Korean. It is
---|
383 | applied to
---|
384 | metadata as well as document text.
---|
385 |
---|
386 | New panel under the Create tab allowing the scheduling of automatic
---|
387 | collection
---|
388 | rebuilding.
---|
389 |
---|
390 | Greenstone Runtime:
---|
391 | ----------------------
---|
392 |
---|
393 | Large code restructuring. Code is split between common-src, build-src and
---|
394 | runtime-src. Makes it easer to use code in other projets, such as
---|
395 | Greenstone 3
---|
396 | and running Greenstone on an iPhone/iPod Touch.
---|
397 |
---|
398 | External links now default to going straight to the web page, rather than
---|
399 | showing a warning page first.
---|
400 |
---|
401 | Improvements to the oaiserver, thanks to DL Consulting. Resumption token
---|
402 | support has been added, and it now validates against online validation
---|
403 | tools.
---|
404 |
---|
405 | Greenstone now compiles for Linux on 64-bit platforms. All programs are
---|
406 | compiled natively for 64-bit, except for those that rely on mg/mgpp, which
---|
407 | still need to be 32-bit compiled. As part of the configure/make
---|
408 | process, the
---|
409 | correct flags are automatically set, so from the developers point of
---|
410 | view you
---|
411 | compile up Greenstone on a 64-bit machine the exact same way you do for any
---|
412 | other Unix-based system.

414 | FLI - Fedora Librarian Interface
---|
415 | ---------------------------------
---|
416 |
---|
417 | The Fedora Librarian Interface (FLI) is very much like GLI in that it
---|
418 | allows
---|
419 | you to gather together your documents. It then uses Greenstone's ability to
---|
420 | convert documents into the FedoraMETS format so that these can be ingested
---|
421 | (put into) a Fedora repository. The process of building a collection
---|
422 | using FLI
---|
423 | exports documents into a repository maintained by a Fedora server rather
---|
424 | than
---|
425 | one maintained by Greenstone. In order to use FLI, you will need to have
---|
426 | Fedora installed. More information on how to install Fedora and set it up
---|
427 | to work with FLI, and how to run FLI itself, can be found in the documents:

712 | The latest version of Greenstone 3 needs lots of changes to catch up and

713 | work well again, because our focus in the recent weeks was all on
---|
714 | Greenstone 2 for its release.
---|
715 |

716 | Therefore, for now, use the version of Greenstone 3 you have. In a

717 | little while, GS3 will be sufficiently updated for you to work with the
---|
718 | latest from SVN. The SVN url (from TRAC) for GS3 is

---|
735 | Therefore, will you try again after adding Java's bin library to your path.
---|
736 |
---|
737 | For instance my PATH starts with:
---|
738 | /opt/jdk1.5.0_10/bin:/opt/jdk1.5.0_10/bin/javac:/path/to/apache-ant-1.6.5:
---|
739 | /path/to/fedora3/server/bin:/path/to/fedora3/client/bin:/opt/jdk1.5.0_10/jre:<more>
---|
740 |
---|
741 | As you see in the above, I have the PATH to the JRE at the end. Try that
---|
742 | first. Otherwise (and I hope this is not necessary), you can try to add
---|
743 | your JDK's bin folder and javac to the PATH, similar to how my PATH
---|
744 | contains them both.
---|
745 |
---|
746 | Tell me how you get on,

973 | Hi everyone,
---|
974 |
---|
975 | As mentioned, one of the new features in Greenstone v2.81 is the ability
---|
976 | to schedule the automatic rebuilding of a greenstone collection using the
---|
977 | GLI.
---|
978 |
---|
979 | Scheduling will require some configuration in order for it to work. The
---|
980 | following link has more information on how to do this for each platform:

1621 | Hi Stephen
---|
1622 |
---|
1623 | Sorry, I misunderstood what you were after. I guess what you want is the
---|
1624 | ability to export a collection as OAI (currently we provide MARC, METS,
---|
1625 | DSpace formats).
---|
1626 | I'm not sure what kind of file OAIster wants
---|
1627 | Is the file you are after like the result of an OAI request? Can you set up
---|
1628 | your Greenstone with an oai server, send a request to it, and then save the
---|
1629 | XML result as a file?
---|
1630 |
---|
1631 | If you wanted to try this, you can use our OAI server to test the format
---|
1632 | before setting up your own one.
---|
1633 | http://www.nzdl.org/cgi-bin/gsdl-svn/oaiserver
---|
1634 |
---|
1635 | If this is not suitable, then I guess the answer is no. If this is something
---|
1636 | that many people might want to do, then we could look at maybe implementing
---|
1637 | it in the future.
---|
1638 |

1849 | Skip the previous email I just sent. Below is the same, but with some
---|
1850 | important corrections.
---|
1851 |
---|
1852 | Hello Andrew,
---|
1853 |
---|
1854 | I tried compiling up a fresh checkout of Greenstone 3 from SVN on the
---|
1855 | Windows machine here and did not encounter this problem. However, this may
---|
1856 | be because my settings for Java are set up in such a manner that it worked
---|
1857 | out.
---|
1858 |
---|
1859 | - Do you have a JDK installed on your machine?
---|
1860 | - What is your JAVA_HOME set to?
---|
1861 | - Do you have the following files in your JAVA_HOME\bin folder:
---|
1862 | javac
---|
1863 | javah
---|
1864 | java
---|
1865 | javadoc
---|
1866 | jar
---|
1867 |
---|
1868 | I do not know to what extent you are familiar with programming, but seeing
---|
1869 | as how you are compiling up GS3 from SVN, I thought I could explain the
---|
1870 | following to you so that you can try out a few things to narrow down where
---|
1871 | the problem might be.
---|
1872 |
---|
1873 | Concerning this bit that you referred to:
---|
1874 | >> compile-packages:
---|
1875 | >> [echo] compile javagdbm
---|
1876 | >> [echo] Windows: compile javagdbm (java only)
---|
1877 | >> [exec] Compiling...
---|
1878 | >> [exec] The system cannot find the path specified.
---|
1879 | >> [exec] The system cannot find the path specified.
---|
1880 | >> [exec] The system cannot find the path specified.
---|
1881 | >> [echo] Install the javagdbm jar file
---|
1882 |
---|
1883 | These print statements happen in your Greenstone3/build.xml file (around
---|
1884 | line 1200).
---|
1885 |
---|
1886 | At the stage this happens, the build.xml is calling the makefile
---|
1887 | "winMake.bat" located in your Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm folder and
---|
1888 | passing the arguments "compile" and "javaonly".
---|
1889 |
---|
1890 | During execution of this makefile, some directory path is referred to that
---|
1891 | it cannot find, causing the compilation to fail at this stage which then
---|
1892 | causes the build to fail when the javagdbm jar file has not been produced.
---|
1893 |
---|
1894 | 1. In a DOS prompt, can you go to the directory
---|
1895 | Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/ and then from there type:
---|
1896 | winMake.bat compile javaonly
---|
1897 | Does it give some error statements here?
---|
1898 |
---|
1899 | 2. If so, can you go one directory further down into a folder called java
---|
1900 | (so that now you are in Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java) and type:
---|
1901 | winMake.bat compile
---|
1902 | Are there any error statements appearing here now?
---|
1903 |
---|
1904 | If there was no error output in doing either 1. or 2. above, neither 3 nor
---|
1905 | 4 below are necessary:
---|
1906 | 3. If you open up the file Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/winMake.bat
---|
1907 | in Wordpad (Notepad doesn't preserve the lines very well), you will see
---|
1908 | that the arguments "compile" and "javaonly" to winMake.bat cause it to
---|
1909 | call another winMake.bat makefile located
---|
1910 | at Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java, passing it the "compile"
---|
1911 | argument.
---|
1912 |
---|
1913 | The first question is, do you have a folder called java situated inside your
---|
1914 | Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/? And does
---|
1915 | Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java contain a file called winMake.bat?
---|
1916 |
---|
1917 | 4. If so:
---|
1918 | When opening up the Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java/winMake.bat
---|
1919 | file in
---|
1920 | WordPad, you may perhaps notice that it refers to lots of directory paths.
---|
1921 | It stores many of these paths in variables marked by ALL_UPPERCASE.
---|
1922 | Sometimes it may happen that in reality these paths contain spaces like
---|
1923 | "Program Files". This could cause problems if spaces are indeed involved,
---|
1924 | unless such paths are embedded in quotes.
---|
1925 |
---|
1926 | Can you replace the following section in your
---|
1927 | Greenstone3/src/packages/javagdbm/java/winMake.bat file with the bit that
---|
1928 | follows it:
---|
1929 | >>>>REPLACE FOLLOWING:

---|
1959 | winMake.bat compile javaonly
---|
1960 |
---|
1961 | Do you still see the same problems?
---|
1962 |
---|
1963 | 5. If the above changes did not fix the errors, we can print out the
---|
1964 | values of these paths to make sure they are all set to something that
---|
1965 | makes sense.

1970 |

1971 | can you paste the following bits between >>>> <<<<:

---|
1987 | Hopefully it should now print out all the values of the paths above so
---|
1988 | that you can see whether any of them is conspicuous. For instance:
---|
1989 | - Do all the printed paths have a value or is any left as ""?
---|
1990 | - And when you look for these folders in Windows Explorer, are you able to
---|
1991 | find all the folder paths which were just printed out to the DOS prompt?
