469DEBRETTS Peerage, Baronetage, K ni ght age and C ompanionage k 01 -xi)! " DEBRETr name known in Mr,: centuries no new book of reference, hot one of tried and proved excellence, with a reputation for accuracy and completeness of detail that is absolutely unequalled and world-wide. I t has earned for itself the position of the Standard " Peerage " Volume. So old-established and well-known a work should need no very detailed description, but it is, perhaps, well to point out that it is a practical, biographical record or living persons, containing over 3,000 pages illustrated with a large number of engravings of the armorial bearings of Pccrs and Baronets, designed by leading heraldic artists. 500Death of Te Puea Ilerangi By GEO. R. HALL. WliEN Te Puea Herangi died on Sunday night,- October 12th, 1952, Turangawaewae Pa, Ngartiawahia, suddenly became the "Centre of Gravity," as if by magic, thousands decided to wend their way thither to pay their last ret spects to a Maori Lady, Midge:, efforts, high and lofty ideals, had. been recognised by her sovereign, the late King George Sixth. But it was not only this Royal recognition that actuated the Maori people to pay their highest tribute to their Princess, for Te Puea seas indeed their very own Princess ; a Scion of Maori Arikis, the very equivalent of Pakeha Kings in Genealogy 'and Maori History. The question is asked, but what is it that made Te 'Duca great in the vision of her people? The Maoris are hard to please and when they rise with one accord to give a common praise, then some good virtue is behind it all. The Press had said that Te Puea was a very successful organ-icer, and site was;- hitt this was not the secret of her fame, though-it was. a mighty contribution, to the energy applied. Princess Te Puea stood on top of the ladder as a first horn of her race, there she made her decisions ; she descended from off that pedestal. took her coat Off,' so to speak, and toiled beside the men on their fields. She spurned the order, "Stand at east ;" once she said i '"Don't work for tile love of money, but for the good : it can bring. Site toured a port'io'n Of the country with her young performing ;tarty, enabling many tribes to extend to her their support. 'In assembled conclaves she fought Ifie tribal representatives for tangible achievements and ivon always. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was represented Jiy Mission President Ottley, Bishop earl Buchner, Elder Edward Ander son and the Tangi Party from the Auckland Branch. They were led on to the Marae by Bro. George R. Hall. who later, along, with President Ottley, filled the position of speakers after the tangi ceremony in accordance 'with ancient Maori custom. Pakeha sympathy was overwhelming, their love for the bereaved Maoris was 'genuine. Farewell our Princess Te Puea, you have only laid down the earth earthy. But the Great Spirit, that God gave to animate your body, lives on with God. Te Puea lives on with the millions 'gone before. Haere e Hine hi tua o to "Rohe Potae." 8 TE KARERE

531NEWS FOR WOMEN Farewell Lamentation For Princess Te Puea From Her Maori People In tribute to the late Prince. Te Puea, "who was ,mother, counsellor and friend to us." Hinauri Strongman sends this message "from her tribe, her peoplp and her friends, both Maori and Pakeha".? Our hearts this day arc heavy with grief; heavy and bowed down with sorrow at the departure of our beloved Kula. The clouds of lamentation gather o'er us, and our tears like the rains from heaven, fall down, to water the -roots of the grief which has so quickly sprung into our hearts. Like the gathering together of the waters from the great expanse of Te Moananui a Kiwa, so the Arohanui of your Maori people, throughout the Aotearoa you lived for, and loved, surges up, gains force, and bursts about you in deep bereavement. Au E KW! We your children weep for you as you take your last, long journey into Te Reingnto the Great Beyond. Sail on, oh Tainui Canoe! Sail on, with Te Puea, Te Whetu 0 Te Rangi (the Star of the Heavens) at your prow. Voice Of The People You, Te Puea, were the voice of our people; the strength of our tribe; the spirit of our Maori Race. Like a guiding star, you shone in our midst, and although you were all about us, yet you were far above us, having ascended to the heights of wisdom and foresight that only the great will ever know. Our problems were your problems. You spent your very life in an unceasing, untiring effort to find solutions for our problems in order to make the way ahead clearer and easier for us to walk Upon. You were our shield, our rock our fort-less, our inspirer, our adviser, our kui, our princess, our Te Puea! The light of hope for the future ofI our Maori race blazed from you 'like the blazing of a brilliant ,star. You tired us with your pride, your enthusiasm, your unilaunti spirit; and it is that zealous achievement of true Maoritanga and mane that we hold up as a tribute to you today. You fought for us, you worked for us; You lived for us. And you died for us. Reflected Light Aue e Kai". Aue e Herangi! Aue to Whetu 0 Te Rangi! How copious are our tears of grief for you! But you will remain the bright and evening star that. transcends all other stars, whose light will never dint, but will reflect for all time in the River of the Waikato and in the River of Maori life which flows from every corner of Aotearoa. You are the great star of Maori-hood and Maori womanhood. We, too, are stars. See, oh Te Peua: We, the small stars that you have left behind, hold your reflection in our depths. See! We give forth your light! We follow your gleam! We traverse the way you have led us. for your works, your strivings, must live on and blaze on in the hearts of all Maoridom. E Kuil Your day of toil is done! In peace, go now, to join your tipuna. Go now, to Apirana Ngata, to Bishop Bennett, to Te Rangi Hiroa. Go 110W, on the great canoe that drifts beyond Kiwa, beyond the shores of the present ou!, out, out! to the shores of the great Hereaftehe shores of Te Reinga. Haere e Kul! Haere Ki to Iwi! 562DEATH AORI LEADER Y-y.:5,-z 4,-.4(424 By the death of Princess Te Puea Hirangi the Maori people have lost one of their most influential leaders, and one who has done much for the young people of the race. She was foremost in the movement which is based on the principle that the destiny of the Maori race will depend largely upon urges from within. She has taught them pride in personal achievement and pride in the native arts, and how to live co-operatively with the Europeans.' Not only the Maori but the whole community owes her a debt of gratitude. Princess Te Puea triumphed over early difficulties by the force of her own character. She set herself high objectives at a time when she had no material wealth to assist her to realise her dreams. By personal effort and by inspiring those about her she brought , ore rangawaewae;r3ponti into the most outstanding example of e aorFcamrhunity life in existence. From the pa radiated, a powerful influence which has helped in the reshaping of Maori life, and which it is hoped will continue as a fitting memorial to one who helped to bridge the gap between the old and the new Maori ways of life. Although Princess Te Puea's mans was country-wide, her courage and determination were perhaps best exemplified in her building and administration of the Turangawaewae Pa. The cost of the unique buildings and their maintenance, and the ' lavish entertainment offered large numbers of visitors, Maori and European, from overseas as well as New Zealanders, had to be provided for. The profitabl farming of land which Princess Te Puea bought was one of the answers, and the community is now on a sound footing to carry on its welfare work. But the mantle of Princess Te Puea will never rest on other shoulders more gracefully than upon the heroic woman who achieved so much for her -race and earned the honour of E. from her

6244).;244i 70,; fed Death Of Princess Ce Puea, Heraiigi: Noted Maori Leader Princess Te Puea Herangi, E., chieftainess of the Waikato and, Maniapoto tribes and a granddaughter of the first Maori King, Potatau, died last night. She was 68 years of age. She received her education at the Mercer, Mangere and Parnell schools and had devoted the whole of her life to the welfare of the Maori people. In 1947 she was decorated with the E. in recognition of her services. Turangawaewae Pa, Ngaruawahia, Will stand as a striking monument to 1r drive and industry. Princess Te Puea had been a iatient in the Waikato Hospital on nd off for a long period and was Overcame Fierce allowed out of hospital last week to ettend the anniversary of the corona- tion of the Maori King, Koroki. She was able to see, at the same time, two imposing new buildings, an accom- modation house and a dining room. both part of one of her schemes for the improvement of facilities at the a, officially opened. She was recently appointed a Justice of the Peace. Parents' Early Life Princess Te Puss was the daughterof Tiahuia, the eldest daughter Of the Maori King Tawhiee and a half- caste Maori, Te Tahuna Herangi, the son of a magistrate of German extraction and a Maniapoto chief- tainess. PRINCESS TE PIMA. Princess Te Puea grew up in the embittered aftermath of the Waikato War when her people were bitterly anti-Government, refusing all con- ciliatory offers. Her life was devoted to the Kiingitanga Maori, the Maori King Movement. In 1913 she and her sister Journeyed up the Waikato River, following the path of a the smallpox epidemic among the Maori people. They found the dead lying unburied and\_with\_their iawn hands they dug graves and Intets3 Puea lived at her borne in Mercer for a considerable time. returning to the "meeting of the waters" some years after the epi- demic. She learned of the toll the scourge had taken of the Maoris and the number of homeless children it had left. She took them under her care, housing and educating them. Her great desire was to build a pa for her people at Ngaruawahia, live there herself and create a home fo the young King Koroki and the tribe that had been driven from the Waikato many years before. She began to rebuild the Kiingitanga. Parchese Of Land Firet'eha Organised a concert party which travelled the North Wand. Then her, iris and boys, the majority orphans she hid-itticteligfett, she took road-making and scrub- cutting contracts. No task was too humble for her. She perchatted some 15 acres of land, covered' with gorse and blackberry, at Ngaruawahia and the Maoriyouth, fired by her enthusl- m, set to work and cleared it. Ngaruawahia was the old capital ofthe Maori kingdom, the "footstool" of her grandfather, Tawhiao. There, beside the sacred spring from which Tawhiao used to drink, Princess Te Puea, by degrees, built what is now the finest model pa in New Zealand. 'To begin with, how- ever, she lived in a sack whore with an earthen floor. Gradually the buildings rose. The pride of her heart was Mahinarangi, the whare- ahakairo, or carved Meeting-Louse. It instilled pride, too, in the heart of the still defiant Waikato. Then came Turongo, a carved residence for the young King, Koroki. pposition To Communal Farming Schemes In her childhood Princess Te Puea was spoiled as only a nobly-born Maori child can be, and there was no-one who dared infect her.' she learnt from the best teacher of all ife itself. It is one that her own people, because of her reek, bestowed on her and she invariably said: "Call, me Te Puea." When the term Kiingi was first accepted by Potatau to Wherowhere, there was no intention of slighting Queen Victoria. It is the rock on which a large part of New Zealand's Maori people rest and is in no sense disloyal-in the British Crown. Princess Te Puea was a tireless: worker for the Maori Red Crinis persona sent hundreds of parcels of feted. to Magri soldiers overseas. She summed up the philosophy of the Kiingitanga in a letter to a friend. "I am proud to be under tht British flag," she said. "We have tr. quarrel with the British. The pa at Ngaruawahia, Turangawaewae, constituted a problem. Ceremonially it was important but it had no economic resources behind it. Te Puea bought a farm in the neighbourhood and it is now a flourishing concern and will for all time provide sufficient income to maintain Algartta wahia as the headquarters of the' Kiingitanga.
