I had already ordered six of the "Herald" photographs, including those you mentioned. My colour photographs are actually colour slides -for projecting onto a screen - and I could get either duplicate slides or colour prints made from them. Which would you prefer ? The account for making the black and white prints has not yet arrived here, so I don't know how much they will be. I have noted the correction you want made, and will put a note in the next issue. oo- Yours sincerely, Joy Stevenso I Editor,

Box 2390, WELLINGTON. THE MAORI PEOPLE IN THE SIXTIES Dear Sir, When we made our original proposal to the Maori Purposes Fund Board in February 1964, we submitted estimates based on a hook of 120,000 words, that is, 304 pages, with d pages of black and white half tore illustrations. Unit cost on an edition of 2,000 was estimated at Ils bd. We asked the Board for a grant of 1E830, only 0150 of which was actual printing subsidy, the rest being set aside for contributors fees, and editors' fees and expenses. The Board ki,dly approved t e grant in fay 1964. Since then, although there are fewer contributors, the length of the book has very greatly increased, and we now estimate it at 220,000 words, that is, approximately 500 pages. If a book of s,ch length is to be adequately illustrated, the number of plates should be increased to 16 pages. Our own sub?editorial overheads or this book, in my editor's and my ow, time, already ammo t to about 0500. Ir our original estimates, we made no allowance for these overheads, although we had then estimated them at E100. This sum still seems proper for us to bear: but the increase must be added on to the cost of the book. Moreover, since 1964 the costs of printing, block making, binding, freight, and insurance have all risen. The actual prir ting and binding cost for this book, without overhead or freight allowances, will be 01,800 to E2,000 on an edition of 2,000. Beca,se a scholarly book has to be held on the publisher's shelves for a number of years, it is normal publishing practice to multiply the printing cost of such books by four to obtai, the selling price (the bookseller buys from the publisher at 33 1,3 per cent discounW). On this costing, the book would have to sell at BOs: but even so we would be out of pocket.

Dear Pei, Thank you for your letter of 27 April regarding the reference to the murder of my predessor in Niue. I see no real objection to the inclusion of these paragraphs in your paper as it is simply quoting from contemporary documents; but I would be very grateful if you could add to the sentence in parenthesis at the end of the third paragraph that I was subsequently satisfied that the crime was a private vendetta rather than an expression of public revolt. The fact is that very much of the information supplied to the press in New Zealand at the time came from a character who had fallen out with Larsen (a Pakeha) and when I arrived at Niue I found that there was through almost the entire population a very deep sense of shame about the incident. There was certainly no sign at all that the three men responsible had any significant following on the Island. At the same time, I can tell you I was most relieved when the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment as I would have had to supervise the execution, a task which I did not fancy at all. I hope you had a successful meeting on the Dictionary business last weekend, and I was sorry that I was unable to be there. I have a few notes in my copy of errors and omissions and will let you have a list of them shortly. Yours sincerely, . M. McEwen) Secret for Maori Affairs.

All necessary corrections have been made and I have attended to the marking of the macrons. A short paragraph has been added as on Sheet 53 (a) ), which I consider should be inserted as indicated on Sheet 53. I trust this will be done. I have written to Yr Mcxxen concerning the passage on the Niue Islanders, and assured him that I would conform with his wishes regarding the point raised by eric. I will advise you in due course as to what kr /4crwentx wishes ark. in this. matter. 1 have noted your comments on the question of macrons. On my typewriter I have had a seldom used key converted for the use of macrons over capital and small letters. idien this key is used there is no movement of the platform and this permits of the vowel letter key being used without having to back space. One would think some such adjustment to the 1notype machine could be made without much trouble or expense. Yours sincerely, e h. Jones /44

King KorokI has a reflective nature. Re keeps himself up to date with public affairs, especially in matters concerning the kgori people and other Polynesians. During one of my visits to Naruawibia in December 1953, Xing Koroki - after I had reported to him on the latest news regarding the ,ueen's visit to New Zealand - mentioned the case of the three Niue Islanders under sentence of doath for the killing of the Niue Island Administrator, Mr Larsen. The outcome was that I wrote a letter for King KorokT which was sent to the Minister of Justice. The King's letter was released to the Press. (Waikato Limes, 18 December, 1953) The letter urged the Government to stay the executions, and it was suggested to the Minister that he instruct the Resident Commissioner designate, Yr Mcowen, to investigate the case. It was pointed out that Mr Mcowen was a keen student of Polynesian peoples, and well qualified to make such an investigation. "I have been moved by deep uneasiness," the King's letter continued, "and it is with heavy heart that I write to you. The recent killing which, of course, was deplorable, may have been brought about by a frantic state of mind, as well as a lack of tolerance on the part of the late administrator." The views he expressed, the King' letter concluded, were shared by many other people, and the Minister was urged to give recognition to them. I am therefore sending you with this letter two copies of the new typescript, the copy of the old typescript from which Mr Schwimmer was working, and the original manuscript. Please have a very careful look at the new typescript, and then return the top copy, complete with any corrections, to me. Mr Schwimmer has asked me to pass on various points to you. I think it will be easiest TO quote from his letter: Long vowels are not marked, because this was done inconsistently in the MS. He should mark them all, very carefully, with macrons. He has spelt many names with hyphens (Turanga-waewae and such like) and I have dropped these ir conformity with more common usage. Except in special cases, there should be either one or more words, but no hyphens used as links. The first chapter and the last 4 pages have been edited in such a way that some passages have been added. He should look carefully whether he agrees with these; they are simply suggestions to get over problems. If Pei has a Chance of checking with Jock MoEwen on the passage he wrote concerning the Niue Islanders, I should be grateful. It is not impossible that McEwen will advise omission of this passage, in which case I definitely feel McEwen's advice should be taker,. My own comments on these points are first, on the question of macrons. Ye shall be printing the book in England, and we know from experience that it is very difficult to Find a printer whogs macrons. We are writing today to Latimer Trend, the printer we 11 be using: but we know that when they printed the latest edition of Hone Tuyhare's poems for us, they had to put the macrons in by hand, and this added ;ik

Box 78, TADMARUNUI. 2nd July, 1965 Mrs Janet Paul, Blackwood Janet Paul Ltd, Publishers, . Box 928, HAMILTON Dear Mrs Janet Paul, I thank you for your letter of the 30th June last and for the t2pescript. In the second last line of sheet 2, after the word 'offer", the following words should be added:- "he conveyed his feelings in a chant". My purpose in giving so wide a coverage of the beginnings of the Maori King Movement is to give readers a proper understanding of the movement, and the part played by Potatau and his Waikato people. Too many people are ignorant of the true story and sometimes make facetious references to the Maori King..In the time of Potatau the King Movement was blamed for the troublous times of the sixties of the last century. I thought it desirable too to make this opening chapter serve as a proper background for this story in order to obviate subsequent harking back to these early times to clear up a point. of view, or to explain an attitude of mind of the people involved in the Maori King Movement. Yours sincerely, P. Te H. Jones;

JP/LO 30th June, 1965 Mr Pei T. H. Jones, .Box 78, TAUMARUNUI-- Dear Mr Pei Jones, Thank you for your letter and your quick response to qv telephone call. It is very good to have the beginning of your contribution to the Symposium. I have had it typed, as you reluested, and have sent the top copy to the editor. He will write to you more fully about it. The Symposium is, as you know, aimed to give a picture of The Maori People Today, a work of similar scope to the book of that name edited 20 years ago by Pro.Sutherland. The contributors, as close observers of our life now, are encouraged to present original research, interpretations and field data wherever possible. The editor suggested in his 2nd memorandum to authors some of the questions it may be profitable to ask: What aspirations do the Maoris have? How do they go about pursuing these aspirations? How do people work together in seeking to satisfy them? What obstacles do they meet? Are these obstacles created by conflict with European expectations, and, if so, how? There has been no special essay assigned to such topics as kinship, religion, race relations, but it is hoped that many essays in this Symposium will have valuable comment to sake on these subjects. Your own essay on the King Movement will inevitably throw light on them all and on race relations in particular. My own feeling is that, in this first quarter you have written a very clear account of the genesis of the King Movement, but have perhaps given too much of your space to its early historical growth. It would be Contd.

Box 78 Taiunui Dear Pei, For quite a while, I have heard nothing from you; and now I have to get ready to send copy to the press. There is enough good material to make this symposium a very worth-while analysis of the Maori situation of today, but naturally there is nothing in it on the King ,ovement and the whole political development among the Maoris of which the King Movement's history is part. Xiso, it has so happened that the pakeha contributors to this symposium have been quicker at writing their contributions so that the Maori scholars are represented by only two, extremely fine, contributions - in fact so good that the book would be very much poorer without them. It would be dreadful for me to edit a book of which by far the larger part is contributed by pakeha academics and which therefore has the very sort of slant I have always tried to prevent in 'le Ao Hou. I'd very much like you to finish this article of yours; and also, I'd like to hear from you as soon as you yet this letter, for I don't know what to do. If I don't finalise the text and send it away, the contributors who have sent in their material will find it is ,ntdated. It does not look as though I shall get back to new Zealand for another year for I have been granted a fellowship here and am carrying on with my study which I very much enioy. But I am sorry to be away. All the best,
