Coronation Commemoration

The forested reserve now known as Coronation Scenic Reserve was bought in 1912 to commemorate the coronation of King George V. However its history goes much further back than this and is readily covered through walking the tracks within the reserve.

The track from Kauika Rd passes through the remnants of a once extensive pa/settlement along the ridgeline above the lookout. The pa complex had a central defended area 300m long and included over 100 storage pits. Later a goldmine was established alongside where the Rust Track is now. This was driven through the 1870s but proved uneconomic. It's great to be able to enjoy this rugged remnant of bush and heritage so close to Whangarei city!
