[1957]58<p>Greenstone is a semi-precious stone that (like this software) is sourced
59in New Zealand. In traditional Maori society it was the most highly prized
60and sought after of all substances. It can absorb and hold <i>wairua</i>,
61which is a spirit or life force, and is endowed with traditional virtues
62that make it an appropriate emblem for a public-domain digital library
63project. Its lustre shows charity; its translucence, honesty; its
64toughness, courage; and the sharp edge it can take, justice. The carved
65piece used in the Greenstone Digital Library Software logo is a <i>patu</i>
66or fighting club, and is a family heirloom of one of our project members.
67In hand-to-hand combat its delivery is very quick, very accurate, and very
68complete. We like to think these qualities also apply to our software, the
69razor sharp edge of the <i>patu</i> symbolizing the leading edge of
70technology.

[2910]73_textaboutgreenstone_ {
74<p>Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing
75digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing
76information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. Greenstone
77is developed and produced by the <b>New Zealand Digital Library
78Project</b> at the <b>University of Waikato</b>, and distributed in
79cooperation with <b>UNESCO</b> and the <b>Humanity Libraries
80Project</b>. It is open-source software, available from <a
81href="http://greenstone.org">http://greenstone.org</a> under the terms
82of the GNU General Public License.
83
84<p>The aim of the software is to empower users, particularly in
85universities, libraries, and other public service institutions, to
86build their own digital libraries. Digital libraries are radically
87reforming how information is disseminated and acquired in UNESCO's
88partner communities and institutions in the fields of education,
89science and culture around the world, and particularly in developing
90countries. We hope that this software will encourage the effective
91deployment of digital libraries to share information and place it in
92the public domain.
93
94<p>This software is developed and distributed as an international
95cooperative effort established in August 2000 between three parties.
96<ul>
97<li>
98The New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato.
99<br>
100The Greenstone software grew out of this project, and this initiative
101has been endorsed by the Communication Sub-Commission of the New
102Zealand National Commission for UNESCO as part of New Zealand's
103contribution to UNESCO's programme.
104<li>
105The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
106<br>
107The dissemination of educational and scientific knowledge throughout
108the world is central to UNESCO's goals as enunciated in its
109Constitution, and information and communication technology is seen as
110an important tool in this context.
111<li>
112The Humanity Libraries Project, based in Antwerp, Belgium.

114This project works with UN agencies and other NGOs, and has established
115a worldwide reputation for digitizing documentation of interest to
116human development and making it widely available, free of charge to
117developing nations and on a cost-recovery basis to others.

696_textgreenstone1_ {
697Greenstone is a suite of software which has the ability to serve digital
698library collections and build new collections. It provides a new way of
699organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM.
700Greenstone is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the
701University of Waikato, and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the
702Humanities Library Project. It is open-source software, available from
703<i>http://greenstone.org</i> under the terms of the GNU General Public
704License.
705}
706
707_textgreenstone2_ {
708The New Zealand Digital Library website (<a
709href="http://nzdl.org">http://nzdl.org</a>) contains numerous example
710collections, all created with the Greenstone software, which are publicly
711available for you to peruse. They exemplify various searching and browsing
712options, and include collections in Arabic, Chinese, French, Maori, and
713Spanish, as well as English. There are also some music collections.
714}
715
716_textgreenstone3_ {
717Greenstone runs on Windows and Unix. The distribution includes ready-to-use
718binaries for all versions of Windows, and for Linux. It also includes
719complete source code for the system, which can be compiled using Microsoft
720C++ or gcc. Greenstone works with associated software that is also freely
721available: the Apache Webserver and PERL. The user interface uses a Web
722browser: typically Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.
723}
724
725_textgreenstone4_ {
726Many document collections are distributed on CD-ROM using the Greenstone
727software. For example, the <i>Humanity Development Library</i> contains
7281,230 publications ranging from accounting to water sanitation. It runs on
729minimal computing facilities such as those typically found in developing
730countries. The information can be accessed by searching, browsing by
731subject, browsing by titles, browsing by organisation, browsing a list of
732how-tos, and by randomly viewing the book covers.
733}
734
735_textgreenstone5_ {
736Greenstone is specifically designed to be highly extensible and
737customisable. New document and metadata formats are accommodated by writing
738"plugins" (in Perl). Analogously, new metadata browsing structures can be
739implemented by writing "classifiers." The user interface look-and-feel can
740be altered using "macros" written in a simple macro language. A Corba
741protocol allows agents (e.g. in Java) to use all the facilities associated
742with document collections. Finally, the source code, in C++ and Perl, is
743available and accessible for modification.

771The Greenstone software is a collaborative effort between many
772people. Rodger McNab and Stefan Boddie are the principal architects and

774Buchanan, Hong Chen, Elke Duncker, Carl Gutwin, Geoff Holmes, John
775McPherson, Craig Nevill-Manning, Gordon Paynter, Bernhard Pfahringer, Todd
776Reed, Bill Rogers, and Stuart Yeates. Other members of the New Zealand
777Digital Library project provided advice and inspiration in the design of
778the system: Mark Apperley, Sally Jo Cunningham, Steve Jones, Te Taka
779Keegan, Michel Loots, Malika Mahoui and Lloyd Smith. We would also like to
780acknowledge all those who have contributed to the GNU-licensed packages
