    1414is noted, the abstracts do not represent a full translation of the entire contents. They summarise long items such

    1616notices, advertisements, short news reports. In sum the abstracts represent an abbreviated form of a newspaper and

    28 <p>This is a small but growing collection based on "Niupepa 1842-1933", a microfiche collection
    29 produced by the Alexander Turnbull Library. Niupepa are periodicals published in Maori or
    30 for a Maori readership. Between 1842 and 1933 there were three main types of Niupepa published:
    31 Government sponsored, Iwi based and religious. By the twentieth century most Niupepa were religious
    32 publications.

    34 Niupepa are an important source of information on individuals, Iwi, whaikorero, waiata, Maori
    35 opinions and the development of Maori as a written language.

     68<p>The niupepa collection consists of over 17,000 pages taken from 34
     69separate periodicals. It is based on &quot;Niupepa 1842-1923&quot;, a
     70microfiche collection produced by the Alexander Turnbull Library. 55% of
     71the collection is written solely in Māori, 43% is bilingual and about
     722% is written in English. There were three main types of niupepa published;
     73government sponsored, Māori initiated, and religious.
