It provides a new way of organizing 76 information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. Greenstone 77 is developed and produced by the New Zealand Digital Library 78 Project at the University of Waikato, and distributed in 79 cooperation with UNESCO and the Humanity Libraries 80 Project. It is open-source software, available from <a 81 href="http://greenstone.org">http://greenstone.org under the terms 82 of the GNU General Public License. 83 84
The aim of the software is to empower users, particularly in 85 universities, libraries, and other public service institutions, to 86 build their own digital libraries. Digital libraries are radically 87 reforming how information is disseminated and acquired in UNESCO's 88 partner communities and institutions in the fields of education, 89 science and culture around the world, and particularly in developing 90 countries. We hope that this software will encourage the effective 91 deployment of digital libraries to share information and place it in 92 the public domain. 93 94
This software is developed and distributed as an international 95 cooperative effort established in August 2000 between three parties. 96
97
98 The New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato. 99
100 The Greenstone software grew out of this project, and this initiative 101 has been endorsed by the Communication Sub-Commission of the New 102 Zealand National Commission for UNESCO as part of New Zealand's 103 contribution to UNESCO's programme. 104
105 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. 106
107 The dissemination of educational and scientific knowledge throughout 108 the world is central to UNESCO's goals as enunciated in its 109 Constitution, and information and communication technology is seen as 110 an important tool in this context. 111
112 The Humanity Libraries Project, based in Antwerp, Belgium. 113
114 This project works with UN agencies and other NGOs, and has established 115 a worldwide reputation for digitizing documentation of interest to 116 human development and making it widely available, free of charge to 117 developing nations and on a cost-recovery basis to others. 118
71 119 } 72 120 -
