Behind the query134 interface lies a huge collection providing gigabytes of information. We hope135 you find what you want, or at least something intriguing!136 114 137
The Greenstone software
138 115 139
The Greenstone Digital Library software provides a new way of organizing140 information and making it available over the Internet. A collection of141 information comprises several (typically several thousand, or even several142 million) documents, which share a uniform searching and browsing143 interface. The collections in a library are organized in a different144 way--though they share a strong family resemblance. Although primarily145 designed for access over the Web, Greenstone collections can be made available,146 in precisely the same form, on CD-ROM for standalone PCs. Greenstone is147 open-source software, available under the terms of the Gnu public linense.148 149
The research
150 116 151
The goal of our research program is to explore the potential of152 internet-based digital libraries. Our vision is to develop systems that153 automatically impose structure on anarchic, uncatalogued, distributed154 repositories of information, thereby providing information consumers with155 effective tools to locate what they need and to peruse it conveniently and156 comfortably. Our research objectives are to157 158
159
develop technology for creating and automatically160 maintaining collections;161
monitor usage to study library users' needs;162
look at novel interfaces that cater to a wide spectrum of users;163
find ways to abstract layout and bibliographic information164 from document files;165
use this information to enhance presentation and for166 bibliometric research;167
assess potential subject areas for public-domain collections;168
survey and critique other digital library projects.169
170 171
DigiLib Systems Limited
172 173
DigiLib Systems Limited is an174 innovative software company that creates international digital libraries.175 As a major contributor to the Greenstone Digital Library Software they are176 able to build, customize, and extend digital libraries to meet exacting needs.177 Please contact them for an obligation178 free quote.179 180 }181 182 _textpoem_ {183

Kia papapounamu te moana
184 185
kia hora te marino,186
kia tere te karohirohi,187
kia papapounamu te moana188 189
may peace and calmness surround you,190
may you reside in the warmth of a summer's haze,191
may the ocean of your travels be as smooth as the polished greenstone.192 }193 194 _textgreenstone_ {195

196 Greenstone is a semi-precious stone that (like this software) is sourced in197 New Zealand. In traditional Maori society it was the most highly prized and198 sought after of all substances. It can absorb and hold wairua, which is199 a spirit or life force, and is endowed with traditional virtues that make it an200 appropriate emblem for a public-domain digital library project. Its lustre201 shows charity; its translucence, honesty; its toughness, courage; and the sharp202 edge it can take, justice. The carved piece used in the Greenstone Digital203 Library Software logo is a patu or fighting club, and is a family204 heirloom of one of our project members. In hand-to-hand combat its delivery is205 very quick, very accurate, and very complete. We like to think these qualities206 also apply to our software, the razor sharp edge of the patu symbolizing207 the leading edge of technology.208 209
Greenstone Digital Library Software210
Computer Science Department,211 University of Waikato, New Zealand212 213
October 1999214 }
