Arrived at the sea beach, Wharauroa instructed all hie warriors to trail their spears and other arras along the sand and this they did by fastening their weapons to their ankles by flax strings. The party now advanced along the beach in careless order, some shouting, some singing, some skidding flat stones along the wet sands, nil of which was done to make Nrati-Tama think that it was a party of their friends from the south coming to visit then. As they drew near the village, many of the women, children and some of the men, cane down to the belch to meet the visitors. When the time was opportune, Wharauroa gave a signal, and in an instant, weapons were seized and a cherge made into the uneuspeeting Mgati-Tema, all of wham were killed. The rest of Ngati-Tama in the village, seeing what was going en, armed themselves and rushed oat to meet the enemy. eharanroa and his warriors numbered two hundred and eighty warriors and Ngatl.-Tama about the same number. A terrific battle was fought on the beach and lasted for two flood tides, hence the name for the battle, Nga-tai-pars-.rem, the twice flowing tide. The end of the figh ; saw Wharauroa and his followers victorienn. and Ngati-Tame, after losing large numbers, were obliged to retreat, falling back to their ancient stronghold of Te Kawas. 1078,A,ebi X3 y\_ By some excuse they succeeded in allaying her suspicions. Each day Whare and Tapaue returned to feast upon the body until finally Rangihoto, anxious over the long absence of her husband, followed them and from the remains, was able to recognise her husband's body. She first suspected foul play when a fly struck her in the centre of the forehead when she was In front of her house one day. The horrid actions of Where and Tapaue were thus brought to light with the result that Te Ruing", a son of Rawl- hoto, and Naos., his cousin, conspired to kill the two brothers. Their decision was further strengthened by the murder of one of Te Ruinga's tribesmen at the hands of Where and Tapaue. The two brothers were returning from a plane on the lower reaches of the Waikato when they came upon a man at Ahikneo. This unfortunate had just remove his hinaki (eel basket) from the river. His enemies killed him, took out his entrails, and paddled up stream to their home where he was eaten. The Ngati-dakirangi later became concerned over the long absence of the eel fisher and on investigating, found his entrails caught up in the weeds on the river bank. Later the full story became known and word was sent to Te Ruinga who was at that time at Te Akau with Mom,. When the messengers had told their story, Te Rainga asked, "I whea koutoa?" "i/here were you?" "I reira tonu." "There all the time." Te Ruinga then observed, "Were iho ano nga uma o nga taurekareka nel i nga kohun toitol o taku kainga o Kurakehu." "Verily these low-born ones were heating their breasts ith the boiled t,itoi (fresh water fish) of my home at Kurakehu." A common custom among the raori people was to make known a hostile ' intention by giving some hint as to what might be expected, and Laos., departing from his home at Te Akau, visited Te Kura, a minor wife of Tapaue, and said, "Kia pal to tlaki i a koe. By this time To Pate had completed the defeat of Ngati-Te-Ata. To Ata-i-rehla and her ohildrem had by a previous arrangement, esoaped by taking refuge on the roof of a house. The bodies of the slain were then cloaked and eaten by the war party. Papaka now ordered that the entrails of his uncles be presented to Te Patti to be used for dragging his canoes bank to the Waikato. Thin action en the part of Papaka was so that Te Putu should share in the revenge for the killing of Tapaue. Papaka now remained in Maluku with his mother, To Ata-i-rehla, and became the leader of Kgati-Te-Ata, but he was not satisfied with his revenge for Toaanglna, the man who had killed Tapaue, was still alive.
