Hi. We are moving our Contentdm digital collections to GS.  My programmer 
has been able to, with the help of a perl script he wrote, migrate 
Contentdm images and associated metadata to GS.  I did a poor job last 
week in asking a bonehead design question so I'll try again.

I am working on the out-of-box version of home.dm in /gsdl/macros/ 

There is a middle section of the default page with four tan 
boxes on left and descriptive info on right.  In home.dm, package home, 
I've commented out the text within brackets ({}) of three macros on left -
_textadmin_
_textabgs_
_textgsdocs_

and in package gli have commented out _textgli_.

I've also commented out the bracketed text for the macros

_textdescradmin_
_textdescrgogreenstone_
_textdescrgodocs_
_textdescrgli_

Is there a way to comment out that entire section so that it doesn't 
render in the browser at all?  We are working on GS2.72 running on SuSE 
Linux 10 if that matters.  Here's a shot of what I have so far:

Hi Graeme

Could you please check whether file "gssetup.exe" exists under 
GSDLHOME/bin/windows? If answer is not, how did you get the GS2.72? Did 
you download it from CVS or use the GS installer? If you got GS2.72 from 
CVS, the file wouldn't be existing. However, the file should be there if 
you used the GS installer.

I have installed GS2.72 on a Linux machine, it works fine with "Write to 
CD/DVD".

You'll probably find it easier to edit the _content_ macro in home.dm
directly. To remove the buttons, delete this section of the macro:

Hi Graeme,

I haven't actually tried this, but it seems that you could achieve what
you want by adding an "{If}" statement into the HList format statement
for the classifier that output a "<br>" (break) tag after finding "Y-Z".

Worth a try, depending on how important this is to you.

I have one collection that, because of the nature of the metadata it has, I don't want a Search for it. I only want people to browse by the DateList Classifier I have setup. I have tried 2 things to remove the Search from the _navigationbar_:

   1. I tried simply removing all the Search Indexes for the collection. (Hey, when in doubt... try stuff, right?)

   2. I tried overriding _navigationbar_ in the collection's extra.dm file:

      package Global

      _navigationbar_ {

Neither of them work and I know that hard-coding in a url the like of the one you see above is crazy, but I thought I'd at least try a few things before pestering the good people of this list. ;)

   Didn't work. Do I need to rebuild after making the changes perhaps?

You might have chosen to modify the navigation bar, but even if you did, 
and removed the search link from the navigation bar, the user could 
still get to your search page and search on the built indexes by typing 
the relevent link into their browser.

   Heh heh. More power to 'em. There's not much to search on, but "whatever floats their boat". ;)

It can be achieved by modifying the "search->Vlist" format. You can add 
a query link into the search Vlist like this:
<a href="_gwcgi_?a=q&amp;c=collect-name&amp;q=[Title]" >[Title]</a>
a=q                          action is query
c=collect-name        collect name that you want to search in
q=[Title]                  query string is the value of [Title]

Hello Debjani,

I built collection using Greenstone 2.71 enriching the collection manually
keying metadata. I have now copied this collection in Greenstone 2.72
under collect folder. While browsing, I am able to browse this collection
through internet explorer. The problem I am facing is that I am not
getting files of this collection in my GLI (2.72). I want to enrich my
collection keying some more metadata. Kindly help me to solve the problem.

Could you open the collection in GlI (File->Open)? Were there anything in
Gather panel? Were there any error messages in the console?

Hi, a very quick question about the translation in Greenstone. Is it
possible to translate the digits?

For example when I do a search I get the following string:
in English "27 documents matched the query."
in Dari " 27 Ø§Ø³Ù†Ø§Ø¯ÛŒ Ú©Ù‡ Ø¨Ø§ Ù¾Ø±Ø³ Ùˆ Ø¬Ùˆ ØªØ·Ø¨ÛŒÙ‚ Ú©Ø±Ø¯Ù‡ Ø§Ù†Ø¯ ."

Whereas it would be nice if I coudl get the total to be displayed as Û²Û·
rather than 27.

Hello

Do you want to display PDF files in the original PDF format from the 
search results? If your are, you can try to use [ex.srclink] in the 
SeachVlist format. It could be similar like:
[ex.srclink]{Or}{[ex.thumbicon],[ex.srcicon]}[ex./srclink]

In addition, as you said "browsing through the collection" was fine, you 
can compare Vlist and SearchVlist format from Gli to see what difference 
between them is.

Hi Graeme,

In Greenstone, query result is generated by the server through the macro
_resultline_, which is in the query.dm file in the macros directory. It is
composed by the number of matching documents (i.e. 27 in this case, which is
dynamically returned from the server) plus another macro _textlotsdocs_ in
the corresponding macro file (in the case of English, english.dm). If the
number of matching documents exceeds the up-to limit (it is set in the
'preferences' page), another macro called _textmorethan_ (again, in
english.dm) will be prefixed before the matching number (eg. 27), resulting
in "more than xx documents matched the query".

You can get the content of _resultline_ by putting a html element in place
of the macro, for example, <div id=some_id>_resultline_</div>, then writing
a javaScript in the file query.dm to get the content of _resultline_ using
the id. Then you can parse the content and translate the digits and the text
separately. You can define a macro that contains your script by following
the other macros like _formpagescriptextra_ and put it in
_pagescriptextra_.

Finally, you need to work out how to invoke your translation function when
the page is loaded. For example, window.onload=''your_function_name".

Hi,
If anyone has experience dealing with CJK languages they might be able 
to help me with this one.  I have a Korean text already in html.  When I 
check its character set it seems to be using gb2312 which is simplified 
Chinese.  I can open it up in my browser and see that it's pretty 
clearly Korean however - and a Korean could read it!
When I adjusted the html plug for simplified Chinese, at least I got a 
result which indicates there is text - but it is just oblongs.  With 
other encoding I couldn't even get that far - I tried Korean Hangul and 
just got blanks.
As I say, if someone has had to deal with this in Greenstone they almost 
certainly have a way to deal with it.  At the moment my only solution is 
to run the text to pdf then used pagedimage - that way users can read 
the text but they can't search it.
Solution(s would be much appreciated - if such exist(s).

Hi Julian,

I don't know a lot about Korean but have built a few collections in 
Chinese and Japanese. The first thing I'd suggest is that you open the 
HTML file in your web browser again, and make sure it's readable. You 
should then be able to check what character encoding the browser is 
using to display it (in firefox you go to the "View" menu and select 
"Character Encoding"). Once you're sure of the character encoding you'll 
be better placed to solve the problem. If it's an encoding that 
Greenstone already supports (e.g. UHC or UTF-8) you can set the 
input_encoding option appropriately and it should work. If it's one of 
the several Korean encodings that Greenstone doesn't support we'll need 
to come up with some mapping files to make it work, but that's not too 
hard. Alternatively, you could use iconv to convert the file to UTF-8 
before importing it into Greenstone.

It can be achieved by modifying the "search->Vlist" format. You can add 
a query link into the search Vlist like this:
<a href="_gwcgi_?a=q&amp;c=collect-name&amp;q=[Title]" >[Title]</a>
a=q                          action is query
c=collect-name        collect name that you want to search in
q=[Title]                  query string is the value of [Title]

Hello Debjani,

I built collection using Greenstone 2.71 enriching the collection manually
keying metadata. I have now copied this collection in Greenstone 2.72
under collect folder. While browsing, I am able to browse this collection
through internet explorer. The problem I am facing is that I am not
getting files of this collection in my GLI (2.72). I want to enrich my
collection keying some more metadata. Kindly help me to solve the problem.

Could you open the collection in GlI (File->Open)? Were there anything in
Gather panel? Were there any error messages in the console?

Dear friends,

we are publishing a quarterly revue in four languages (en, es, fr, ru), which 
we want to put in a greenstone collection. Now we would like to know if there 
is a possibility to have the issues being displayed or "used" only in the 
selected interface language. The idea would be to have the search only in one 
language indexes, and the classifiers (e.g. Datelist) only showing one

Whoops. My mistake. I found that not only is _homeextra_ hard coded in, =
but you can't override it. I tried. What I did for my home page is edit =
the _content_ macro. I removed the _homeextra_ macro from it and made my =
own macro for displaying collections called _collections_.

Glad things are working out for you. I have gotten a lot of help from this =
list myself, so when I have the opportunity to help someone else I am more =
than happy to oblige. :) The home preferences thing still makes me wonder =
why no one (except you and I) have said anything about it on the list. =
It's perplexing to me.

images are etc., but other than the reference to it in home.dm I can't=20

I experimented on one of our collections and using double quotes seems to =
work. I have a document (image) that has the phrase "about 1895" in the =
dc.Description and I would pull this up when searching on that phrase. I =
tried reversing the words in the phrase to "1895 about" and searching and =
I didn't get anything, so I know it's searching exact phrase, not all of =
the words (logical AND) or some of the words (logical OR). Try something =
like this and see what you come up with.

I just want to confirm something.  If the document was a Word 
Document, and the phrase "about 1895" was in the actual Word Document 
and not in the dc.Description, would the search on "about 1895" pull 
up this word document?

What can you tell me about the search engine in general?  Does it do 
ranking?  How do you like the user interface for the searching?  Did 
it meet your needs?

Hmm. I don't have any collections with Word documents; they are all image =
only collections with Dublin Core metadata. I would assume the search =
engine would work the same no matter what text it was searching. If you =
have Word documents in your collection, try searching "as phrase" and see =
if it works. Any of the Greenstone *experts* want to say anything? ;)

So far the Greenstone search features have met our needs just fine.

I checked the server and found the congd library was created in 2001, and
we don't server it any more. Instead, we provided a Chinese sample
collection to the public at
http://www.nzdl.org/cgi-bin/library?a=p&p=about&c=chinese&l=zh&nw=utf-8

However, we still keep the source files. I'm not sure whether it has been
completely saved. Do you mind tell me what's your purpose of checking this
library? I may provide some helps by sending you source files.

Greenstone does not do OCRing.

I have a problem with my collection of pdf's files. When I build my 
collection, Greenstone posts a correct report with all the files which are 
integrated. However, when I pr�visualise my collection there is a part of of 
the files which are missed� I use my own sets of metadata. From time to time 
it posts all the documents in my navigators and when I modify enrichment 
some files disappear� Is this normal ? Where come from the error? Thank you

Does each of your contributers have GLI installed on their computers?

Hi Belinda,

Are you going to want your repository solution to be available on the
internet with search engines indexing your content and people linking to
specific documents?  Because greenstone is based around a cgi script
with complex urls it may not be the ideal software for this purpose...

The other thing to consider is that greenstone is based around documents
rather than 'works' you can have document in several sections linked
together but it isn't like say dspace where you can just attach another
document to a record. Because it is so customisable you could probably
get around a number of these things, but it is a different
philosophy/focus from other repository solutions.

Greenstone has a java applet version which you can access a collection
via the web. However I don't think greenstone takes any steps to prevent
problems with multiple access...

They could also run the full version of gli from a shared folder on a
server or something like that, although I haven't really tried this
myself.

I'm happy to be corrected by the community if anything I have said above
is wrong :) I'm certainly not a greenstone expert...

You're on the right track. The metadata you want is called [DocOID].

Also, rather than hardcoding some of the other arguments, like e and c, 
you should make use of the "_cgiarg*_" macros to populate these 
dynamically, i.e.

Hi,

I need to have several greenstone collections that can only be made
available for students/staff on campus as well as a couple of
collections that will be openly available. 

Does any on have any suggestions? I'm currently thinking of having two
instances of greenstone locked down by apache configuration. Is there a
better way? I don't want to collections that are not publicly available
to show at all to a non campus user.

I have already created a second greenstone collection, but I've found
that the gli client still seems to think it is in the old directory. How
do I point it at the new location?

Does anybody know where I can get comprehensive information on the _navarrowstop_ and _navarrowsbottom_ macros and the navigation arrow buttons in general?

I can't find much documentation on them and have found very little in the list archives as well.

So far I have found out on my own:

1. The navarrows can only be used with paged image and html collections, right?
2. I can override the _navarrowsbottom_ and _gotoform_ macros, but not the _navarrowstop_ macro in my extra.dm file.
3. In a paged image collection I cannot remove the top arrows, period.

In addition to solving the above mysteries, I'd really like to be able to move the navarrows to a different location on my document pages, but when looking at document.dm, the _content_ macro ENDS with <div class="document">! Where in the world is the rest of the document page generated from???

Genuinely big thanks for responding to my email, Richard. :) The list has been somewhat inactive lately.

Yes, the first link you have below is the header page. The header page is the one that doesn't contain any of the images that are being "paged". It's the one that precedes the numbered pages, thus will usually have a "next button" with a 1 to go to the first of the paged images. And thanks for the (second) link to the Paged Image collection, but as I said in my first email, this is one of the many things I've studied already. 

Auburn University has a collection that illustrates what I want to do:

What I want to do is have dublin core metadata on the header page. The problem isn't how/where to actually put it on the page, that's easy. You just put [dc.metadataitem], where metadataitem can be Subject, Title, etc., in one of the format strings such as the DocumentText one. The problem is where/how to put it into the XML BASED .item file that the PagedImgPlug processes. I have tried various things, but nothing works.

I have emailed Auburn University, but they referred me to someone that hasn't gotten back to me yet. From reading through some of the list archives, I believe Katherine Don (sp?) is the one who developed the PagedImgPlug, but a recent email says she's on maternity leave so I respectively don't want to bother her.

I'm not sure exactly what you want to do, and where. On which page you

for the user should be the pdf image. How can we make greenstone use the text 
version only for "internal use" and prevent it from showing the text icon on

ah, thanks for the tip, learned something new. 

Unfortunately the httperr log only has Timer_ConnectionIdle -. The
system, application, and security event logs have nothing. I found the
debugging_enabled variable in the gliserver.pl and changed that to 1 but
nothing new printed to screen. Is 1 the proper entry to turn on
debugging? Or a different way to turn on debugging in greenstone?

I have noticed that if I leave off the "%s" %s arguments the cgi
will be terminated by the server after a timeout period, and with
the arguments we have the CGI error. I have also tried with All
Unknown CGI Extensions prohibited and allowed, no difference. 

To me,

Hi,

after I upgraded from version 2.72 to 2.73 I cannot access my collection anymore using the remote client GLI with the server running on Debian. On my local version (also upgraded) it works fine still.
The following error info is issued after I logged in using the remote GLI :

Server returned HTTP response code: 500 for URL(...)/cgi-bin/gliserver.pl?cmd=get-script-options&script-classinfo.pl&xml=&language=en&listall&un=...
 [sorry but I left out my server and login data]
Unable to get the list of classifiers using classinfo.pl -listall.

Same errors repeat with pluginfo.pl instead of classinfo.pl.

Is this part of the being 'unstable' of 2.73 ? Or should I look at another possible explanation ?
