178
You can tell when you have arrived at an individual book because there is a
179photograph of its front cover. Beside the photograph is a table of contents
180with an arrow marking where you are. This table is expandable: click on the
181folders to open them or close them. Click on the open book at the top to close
182it.
183
184
Underneath is the text of the current section. When you have read through
185it, there are arrows at the bottom to take you on to the next section or back
186to the previous one.
187
188
Below the photograph are three buttons. Click on detach to make a
189new browser window for this book. (This is useful if you want to compare
190books, or read two at once.) Click on expand contents to expand out the
191whole table of contents so that you can see the titles of all chapters and
192subsections. Click on expand text to expand out the whole text of the

219
How to search for particular words

220

221 From the search page, you make a query in these simple steps:

222
223

Specify what documents you want to search
224
Say whether you want to search for all or just some of the words
225
Type in the words you want to search for
226
Click the Begin Search button
227

228
229
When you make a query, the titles of twenty matching documents will be shown.
230There is a button at the end to take you on to the next twenty documents. From
231there you will find buttons to take you on to the third twenty or back to the
232first twenty, and so on. Click the title of any document, or the little button
233beside it, to see it.
234
235
A maximum of 100 is imposed on the number of
236 documents returned. You can change this number by clicking the
237 preferences button at the top of the page.

242
243
Search terms

244
245
The stuff that you type into the query box is interpreted as a list of words
246called "search terms." Each term contains nothing but alphabetic characters
247and digits. Terms are separated by white space. If any other characters such
248as punctuation appear, they serve to separate terms just as though they were
249spaces. And then they are ignored. You can't search for words that include
250punctuation.
251
252
For example, the query

253
<kbd>Agro-forestry in the Pacific Islands: Systems for Sustainability (1993)</kbd>

254
will be treated the same as

255
<kbd>Agro forestry in the Pacific Islands Systems for Sustainability 1993 </kbd>

256

257
258_iconblankbar_
259
260
Query type

261
262

There are two different kinds of query.

263
264
Queries for all of the words. These look for chapters (or
265 titles) that
266 contain all the words you have specified. Documents that satisfy the
267 query are displayed, in alphabetical order.

268
269
Queries for some of the words. Just list some terms that are
270 likely to appear in the documents you are looking for. Documents are
271 displayed in order of how closely they match the query. When determining
272
273 the degree of match,
274
275

276
the more search terms a document contains, the closer it matches;
277
rare terms are more important than common ones;
278
short documents match better than long ones.
279

280
281
Use as many search terms as you like--a whole sentence, or even a
282 whole paragraph. If you specify only
283 one term, documents will be ordered by its frequency of occurrence.

284
285

286
287

288
289_iconblankbar_
290
291
Scope of queries

292
293

294You can choose the "granularity" at which your search is done, that
295is, the size of the text against which the query is matched.
296You can choose title or
297chapter.
298
299
Regardless of how you search, the results are always displayed in terms of a
300complete book, opened at the appropriate place.
301
302

303
304_iconblankbar_
305
306
307
Case sensitivity and stemming

308
309
When you click the preferences button at the top of the page you will
310see two pairs of buttons that control the case sensitivity and stemming of your
311queries. The first set of buttons controls whether upper and lower case must
312match (case sensitivity). The second set controls whether to ignore word
313endings or not (stemming).
314
315
For example, if the buttons ignore case differences and
316ignore word endings are selected, the query

317
<kbd>African building</kbd>

318
will be treated the same as

319
<kbd>africa builds</kbd>

320 because the uppercase letter in "African" will be transformed to
321 lowercase, and the suffixes "n" and "ing" will be removed from
322 "African" and "building" respectively (also, "s" would be removed from
323 "builds").
