233
How to search for particular words

234

235 From the search page, you make a query in these simple steps:

236
237

Specify what documents you want to search
238
Say whether you want to search for all or just some of the words
239
Type in the words you want to search for
240
Click the Begin Search button
241

242
243
When you make a query, the titles of twenty matching documents will be shown.
244There is a button at the end to take you on to the next twenty documents. From
245there you will find buttons to take you on to the third twenty or back to the
246first twenty, and so on. Click the title of any document, or the little button
247beside it, to see it.
248
249
A maximum of 100 is imposed on the number of
250 documents returned. You can change this number by clicking the
251 preferences button at the top of the page.

257
Search terms

258
259
The stuff that you type into the query box is interpreted as a list of words
260called "search terms." Each term contains nothing but alphabetic characters
261and digits. Terms are separated by white space. If any other characters such
262as punctuation appear, they serve to separate terms just as though they were
263spaces. And then they are ignored. You can't search for words that include
264punctuation.
265
266
For example, the query

267
<kbd>Agro-forestry in the Pacific Islands: Systems for Sustainability (1993)</kbd>

268
will be treated the same as

269
<kbd>Agro forestry in the Pacific Islands Systems for Sustainability 1993 </kbd>

273
274
Query type

275
276

There are two different kinds of query.

277
278
Queries for all of the words. These look for chapters (or
279 titles) that
280 contain all the words you have specified. Documents that satisfy the
281 query are displayed, in alphabetical order.

282
283
Queries for some of the words. Just list some terms that are
284 likely to appear in the documents you are looking for. Documents are
285 displayed in order of how closely they match the query. When determining
286
287 the degree of match,
288
289

290
the more search terms a document contains, the closer it matches;
291
rare terms are more important than common ones;
292
short documents match better than long ones.
293

294
295
Use as many search terms as you like--a whole sentence, or even a
296 whole paragraph. If you specify only
297 one term, documents will be ordered by its frequency of occurrence.

298

305
Scope of queries

306
307

308You can choose the "granularity" at which your search is done, that
309is, the size of the text against which the query is matched.
310You can choose title or
311chapter.
312
313
Regardless of how you search, the results are always displayed in terms of a
314complete book, opened at the appropriate place.
315

317

319
320
321
Case sensitivity and stemming

322
323
When you click the preferences button at the top of the page you will
324see two pairs of buttons that control the case sensitivity and stemming of your
325queries. The first set of buttons controls whether upper and lower case must
326match (case sensitivity). The second set controls whether to ignore word
327endings or not (stemming).
328
329
For example, if the buttons ignore case differences and
330ignore word endings are selected, the query

331
<kbd>African building</kbd>

332
will be treated the same as

333
<kbd>africa builds</kbd>

334 because the uppercase letter in "African" will be transformed to
335 lowercase, and the suffixes "n" and "ing" will be removed from
336 "African" and "building" respectively (also, "s" would be removed from
337 "builds").
